OS/2: The Operating System Windows Keeps Trying to Be
Beginner/Intermediate
OS/2 is a true multi-tasking 32-bit operating system. Both the operating
system and programs written specifically for OS/2 are very stable, with
system shutdowns a rarity. This seminar will demonstrate OS/2 and some of
its uses, and outline advantages, disadvantages and obstacles faced when
using this powerful operating system.

Stan's updated PMSane scanner front end
I have repackaged the program into 2 zip files. The first contains the
installation program and the PMSane executables and online help files. The
second has all of the runtime modules (SANE, EMX, Vispro etc.).
Download these 2 files into a temporary directory and unzip the first one.
Then VIEW INSTALL.INF for instructions.

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/apps/graphics/scan/pmsanrun.zip
The installation program extracts what it needs from the runtime package so
you don't have to unzip it yourself.

Peter McGrath just sent me an OS/2 version of JunkBusters/2, filter for web
ads.
"This is great, gets rid of all those ads on webpages. I've also included
my updated "blockfile" with a few extra sites to block out.
This is the README for the OS/2 version of Junkbuster 1.4 beta 1 For
general informations about Junkbuster consult the file README.
This version of Junkbuster was 'ported' from the original unix version. It
wasn't really a port, because with the wonderful EMX library and the GNU
C-Compiler it was an easy task.
After unpacking the Zip-archiv (on a HPFS-drive) you will find the
following files: bin\junkbuster.exe - The OS/2 executable version of
Junkbuster bin\junk.cmd - Command file which invokes junkbuster.exe with
options blockfile - a sample blockfile cookiefile - a sample cookiefile
README - the original README junkbuster.1 - the manual as a UNIX manpage
gpl.html - GNU General Public Licence ijbfaq.html - Manual for the Internet
Junkbuster, HTML format ijbman.html - Frequently Asked Questions on the
Internet Junkbuster blockfile.org - the original provided blockfile
README.OS2 - guess, you read it source.zip - the source code

VOICE SpeakUp for August 3
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The VOICE events calendar for August is filling in nicely. Aside from the
publishing date for our August Newsletter, we have scheduled a SpeakUp
session with Kim Rasmussen, author of the popular OS/2 internet suite
Internet Adventurer.
The SpeakUp session, which will be open to all, will be held on the WEBBnet
IRC network at 8pm US Eastern Daylight time on Monday, August 3, 1998 (0:00
GMT Tuesday, August 4, 1998). If you need information about IRC clients or
WEBBnet servers, please see the Meeting Info page of our site at
http://www.os2voice.org/.
We hope to see everyone in attendance for this SpeakUp session. Remember,
this is your chance to provide direct feedback to an OS/2 developer, ask
questions, and maybe provide him with new ideas for his product(s).
The Events Calendar, recently added to our website, allows you to plan
ahead for VOICE meetings and special events. Please let us know your
opinions of its usefulness.

Dear Mr. Know-It-All now online
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The July "Dear Mr. Know-It-All" OS/2 column is now online at
http://www.scoug.com/os24u/1998/scoug807.2.mrkia.html
Every monthly Dear Mr. Know-It-All column answers questions about OS/2 and
other questions of interest to OS/2 users.
This month, Mr. Know-It-All discusses:
- The motherboard's LBA mode, how it works, and OS/2 compatibility - What
part of OS/2 tells you whether you should upgrade your cpu or, instead,
upgrade your peripherals - How to keep track of those occasional floppy
disks
Dear Mr. Know-It-All has been one of OS/2's most popular online monthly
columns since 1996. Each month, Mr. Know-It-All covers topics selected from
all aspects of OS/2. Read what other OS/2 users want to know, in "Dear Mr.

Process Commander. Process Commander is Stardock's solution to the SIQ
issue on OS/2. When a program on OS/2 hangs, it can cause the entire OS to
hang. Process Commander integrates itself into OS/2 in such a way that it
is the single most reliable way to recover from system hangs that is
available. On top of that, Process Commander adds some cool new features to
OS/2 itself such as a "Shutdown and reboot" option, a "Shutdown folder"
(opposite of start up folder), a handy GUI for monitoring processes and
threads, and a ton of command line tools to make creating powerful REXX
scripts a snap.

off the commerce server (and it's still there) and sales jumped through the

popular PlusPak: Themes product. As the name implies, PlusPak: Themes on
OS/2 allows you to change OS/2's icons in one swoop similar to themes on
Win95/98 does. But PlusPak: Themes can change over 130 icons on your
desktop and the icons are outstanding.

you can create a snapshot of your desktop's icons and distribute it to

icons from hobbes or some other FTP site and individually implementing
them. There is a NeXTStep theme and a Windows NT theme available for free
download already on Stardock's website.
Stardock as the first major upgrade to its flagship OS/2 product nears its
first public beta. A ton of changes have been put into Object Desktop 2.0.
A lot of changes have been made under the covers to ensure Object Desktop
is more compatible for OS/2 users and faster. Other changes are very easy
to see due to the significant user interface changes. Coolest features in
OD 2.0 include bringing in the viewers from Object Desktop Professional,
Object Netscan which can keep track of your internet performance (even on a
LAN -- try that on NT accurately!), and a new super folder GUI that makes
the OS/2 folder much more powerful and faster than before.

CMS/TSO Pipeline product to netrexx and java. This release has some new and
improved stages including, LOOKUP, ZONE, PAD, CASEI and PICK. There have
also been improvements made to APPEND, PREFIX, TCPDATA, TCPCLIENT and
JUXTAPOSE. Bugs were fixed in BUFFER and SPECS.

different from many. I have used Rexx for years on MainFrames. When Rexx's
creator, Mike Cowlishaw, announced NetRexx I was very pleased. Here was an
improved variant of a good and familiar language designed to produce java
classes. The euphoria lasted until I started writing my first complex
program.
effective way to read and write files. They are how I parse the output of
commands, selecting and rejecting information. They are great when
collections of data have to be sorted, merged, collated, or massaged in
almost any way. The data can come from files, commands, tcpip, sql, arrays,
rexx objects etc. Pipes make programming much simpler - I really missed
them. After exchanging emails with Pipe's originator, John Hartmann, I
realized that if I wanted pipes for java I was going to have to write the
code myself. Pipes for NetRexx and Java was born.
idea. They can be used from the command line or from inside programs.
njPipes can extract pipes from NetRexx source. Eventually I will extend
this to java too. There are many filters, also known as stages, that can
select and manipulate objects. The set of stages supplied with njPipes is
constantly growing. The information at
http://pucc.princeton.edu/~pipeline/#AHelp is being used to guide
development. When necessary, it's easy to construct customized stages.
switching are not nearly as fast as under CMS, and with java one cannot get
as close to the metal as need to fix this. However, the current njPipes
implementation is fast enough to be quite useful. On a Sun E450, with two
300Mhz Sparcs, using native threads, it can move over 10,000 objects per
second. Due the to nature of complex pipes, the more cpus you have, the
faster njPipes will run them.
well but bugs are still being found especially since new stages are popping
up from several sources. Contributions are always welcome and most have
been placed under the GPL. Once the set of stages is a bit more complete
(there are over seventy now) a careful look will be taken at performance.

play. It believes these technologies will give it substantial leverage in
penetrating the copulation enhancement market. The product addresses two
important user concerns: the need for virus protection and the need for a
firewall to ensure the non-propagation of human beings. The Contraceptive98
suite consists of three products: Condom98, DeFetus 1.0 (from Sementec),
and AIDScan 2.1 (from Norton Utilities). A free copy of Intercourse
Explorer 4.0 is bundled in the package. The suite also comes in two
expanded versions. Contraceptive98 Professional is the Client/Server
edition, for professionals in the sexual services sector. Contraceptive98
Small Business Edition is a package for start-ups, aimed at the housewife
and gigolo niches. While Contraceptive98 does not address non-traditional
copulatory channels, future plug-ins are planned for next year. They will
be known as BackDoor, AuraLee, TitElation, and JerkOff.
installation, the Condom98 software checks for minimum hardware. If the
user meets the requirements, the product installs and is sufficiently
scaleable to meet most requirements. After installation, operation
commences. One caution is that the user must have sufficient RAM to
complete the session. When the session is complete, a disconnect is
initiated, and the user gets the message, "It is now safe to turn off your
partner." DRAWBACKS Usability testers report that frequent failures were a
major concern during beta testing. General Protection Fault was the most
serious error encountered. Early versions had numerous bugs, but most of
these have been eliminated. The product needs to be installed each time it
is used.
reasonably good value for its $49.95 price tag, and is far superior to its
shareware version. Hopefully, future releases (of the software, that is)
will add missing functionality, such as Backout and Restore,
Uninterruptible Power Supply, and Onboard Camera. Microsoft CEO Bill Gates
is optimistic about Contraceptive98's potential. He recently said, "Our
contraceptive products will help users do to each other what we've been
doing to our customers for years."
