IdentD/2 and FinderD/2 from Sektor Technologies has been updated.

FinderD is a I-net server application that is like a message board. The
admin sets up global information and a user can finger it and get that
information.

IdentD is an Identification server. This server confirms where a connection
is being made from. useful for connecting to IRC servers (mainly Efnet)

I have fixed a "SOCKET" leak in both the FingerD and IdentD servers. You can
download the identd 1.3 and fingerd 1.3 from
http://sektortech.dyndns.com/minor.html

or addition support regarding these servers. subscribe to sektortech help

DYNDNS/2 4.0 for DYNDNS.com ML.org and DYNIP.com is finally released!

To Download DYNDNS/2 4.0 go to http://sektortech.dyndns.com

DYNDNS/2 now officially has a support Mailing list. To subscribe: E-mail:
"Sektortech-lists@sektortech.dyndns.com" Nothing in the subject and in the
BODY ONLY put: " subscribe dyndns2 "

What is DYNDNS/2? Well, DYNDNS/2 4.0 is the first OS/2 based GUI Client for
dyndns.com ml.org and dynip.com. Dyndns.com, ml.org and dynip.com provide
"Dynamic DNS" services. Basically. Add a static DNS name to your dynamic IP.
With one of these services you can leave your computer running at home and
connect to it from work and transfer files between them. You can run an IRC
FTP WWW MAIL etc type of servers very cheaply.

--------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi
All,

I thought I'd shared our experience with sockets under Warp4. We developed
several Win32 modules using Winsock and took them to a Warp4 machine. We
then included "pmwsock.h" instead of "winsock.h", and amazingly it all
compiled clean and, even better, it ran perfectly!

We found that gethostname() does not work but we found a workaround creating
a temporary UDP socket and then querying the socketname as suggested on page
244 of "Windows Sockets Network Programming" by Quinn Shute.

Oh, I almost forgot, you need to link with \toolkit\lib\pmwsock.lib. --
Carlos Portela Simple Software Solutions, Inc. http://www.simple-sw.com

[Snips from reply to Moderator followup email] 1) I'm still running Warp 3.
Any idea on winsock compatibility bewtween Warp 3 and Win32?

Unfortunately I don't know. It works beautifully on Warp 4 though.

2) Is the win32 winsock the winsock 1.1 calls or the winsock 2.0 calls? I
think the WS 2 calls are mostly for LSP support, which I doubt would be
usable in a Warp machine.

That, I don't know either. We are making very basic socket calls such as
bind, connect, recv, send, setsockopt, etc, etc. All those are fully
supported.

3) Are the libraries and *.h files part of the standard warp 4 distribution?
if not where can one obtain them?

Yes they are part of the Warp4 Toolkit.
_____________________________________________________________________ We had
a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate J Street Mailer, our pure Java email
client, to many of the 14,000 people who attended JavaOne in San Francisco
in late March. During the entire four days of the conference we demonstrated
it with OS/2, although it runs just as well with Windows 95/NT, Linux, and a
host of other platforms.

I have prepared an FAQ about J Street Mailer that may be found at our home
page: http://www.innoval.com. Please take an opportunity to review it. We
have a comprehensive features list (you'll see the Post Road Mailer
influence), a screen shot, and a demo that you are free to download and try.
If you have any questions, please be sure to contact us.

We want your business, and as we have done with the Post Road Mailer, we'll
continue to improve the product (with free upgrades for a year) and provide
excellent technical support.

Substantial New Beta Release of J Street Mailer

Harrison, New York, April 9, 1998, InnoVal Systems Solutions has released a
substantial new beta version of J Street Mailer. This new beta follows right
on the heels of Release One, the first production version of J Street Mailer
that was released on March 24 at JavaOne in San Francisco.

"We barely stopped to breath after putting out Release One," said Dan
Porter, President of InnoVal Systems Solutions, Inc. "Java redefines the
software development paradigm. Change is a constant state if one wants to
keep up with new developments in Java. For instance, Sun recently released a
maintenance revision for its HotJava browser component. I want our customers
to have a chance to test it in the J Street Mailer context as soon as
possible."

InnoVal has incorporated the improved HotJava browser component from Sun
Microsystems on an experimental basis. Users can toggle between J Street
Mailer's existing browser and the new HotJava component to evaluate
performance and reliability. "I'm hoping to get a quick decision from our
charter users," said Porter. "I'm hoping to have an updated production
release of JSM, complete with IMAP4 support, by May 1st."

In addition to the HotJava component, this beta release also includes:

* New vector sorting API's for improved folder sortings. And if an item has
been selected prior to sorting, the selection criteria is maintained after
sorting.

* Cut, copy and paste for the HotJava, text-mode viewer, and compose
windows.

* Optional support for FAT partition short file names so that data can be
shared between platforms that can access FAT (e.g. OS/2 and Windows NT).

* Enhanced Transaction Log. Entries for messages that get deleted or moved
to folders, accounts, or directories by filters, now specify that
information.

* Enhanced Virtual Folders. You can now select which "real" folders to
include when launching a virtual folder.

* Color Coding of Messages in Filters. Filters can now be used to mark notes
with color codes based on filter criteria.

* Problems opening a message with an attachment in the html browser window
now works properly.

* Better HTML Support. HTML formatted pages handle background images, form
elements, and HTML attachments correctly.

* Improved Message Window. Widths of columns in the message list panel of
the main window as well as virtual folders are now saved.

J Street Mailer Charter Users, including anyone who has purchased a license
for Release One, are welcome to try this new beta release at
http://www.innoval.com.

For additional information, please send an email to innoval@ibm.net, write
to InnoVal Systems Solutions at 600 Mamaroneck Avenue, Harrison, New York
10528, USA, or telephone InnoVal at 914-835-3838. InnoVal's home page may be
found at http://www.innoval.com.

--------------------------------------------------------------------- ZMech
is an interactive state machine development tool. It is an example of a
visual programming tool built using IPAD.

It allows highly complex state machines to be: * interactively described
through a state diagram. * translated into a form suitable for direct
execution by an embedded micro controller or other event driven system (such
as a GUI system). * interactively debugged by running it against a state
diagram.

ZMech is currently only available for Linux 2.0.x (Intel) and Solaris 2.5
(SPARC), but versions for OS/2 WARP, NT 3.51, Win 95, Win 3.1 and MSDOS will
be available within the next few weeks.

ZMech can be obtained from:

www.demon.co.uk/titan/ZMECH
_____________________________________________________________________

IPAD V0.6.1 (Beta) for Solaris 2.5 (SPARC), Linux 2.0.x (Intel), OS/2 WARP,
NT 3.51, Win 95, Win 3.1 and MSDOS is now available for download. Although
IPAD is a COMMERCIAL product, the evaluation version is available for
download FREE of charge.

********************************************************* Some very simple
IPAD demos are now provided which can be displayed on most web browsers (as
animations) without the need to install IPAD. They can also be displayed on
image viewers which are capable of displaying GIF animations.
*********************************************************

To recap:

IPAD is the multiplatform front end to a special tool to be completed some
time in the future (see ZMech announcement below). It currently provides
most of the functionality of an interactive GUI vector drawing package,
together with some bit mapped image handling. It allows easy editing across
files using multiple overlapping windows. The graphics objects drawn and
edited by IPAD have built in intelligence. They react to the mouse and each
ductivity and reduce tedious repetitive setup sequences.

With most other packages an object must first be selected and placed into
one of many modes in order for the package to provide handles through which
the object must be manipulated. With IPAD however, simple rules govern the
behavior of an object depending on what other objects it is touching and how
it is approached and grabbed.

Any object may be picked up and moved or its shape changed without it first
having to be selected, and if its edges are touching any other object, IPAD
will intelligently manipulate those objects in order to reduce the knock on
effects of the change even where there are recursive dependencies. With most
other packages a simple change can require a lot of rework.

A very powerful feature of IPAD is the way it is able to manipulate groups
of selected objects. A group is not just a collection of objects, it has
properties of its own. A group can be edited like any other object. Objects
can be very easily picked up or dropped from a group. Groups can also be
opened and their contents edited in their own windows.

IPAD also has a category system that allows the user to define the
properties of an object and to override those properties in a derived
object. Complex objects can thus be built by grouping simpler objects and
assigning them properties. This makes it a very simple matter to create a
set of component objects which can be held in a template window, copied
across into the working drawing and the properties modified to suit the
working drawing.

IPAD supports printers using PCL 5 (most HP), ESC-P2 (most Epson),
PostScript and anything else via ppm or png. It has been designed from the
ground up to be fast and responsive. The base system is a 486DX 33MHz + 8MB
RAM + ISA video card.

********************************************************* NEW ZMech - a
state machine development tool is now provided as an example visual
programming tool built using IPAD. Get a copy, stick it on a floppy and hide
it somewhere safe until you need it. Its a really sophisticated case tool
and the evaluation version is currently available for $0.00. Get it now from
the primary IPAD distribution site.

--------------------------------------------------------------------- It's
time again for the Central Ohio OS/2 & Java Group meeting.

You may have noticed that our name has changed! Well, we've officially
changed the name of our group to include Sun Microsystem's Java(tm) language
and its environment.

As a group, we decided that with the explosion in popularity of Java and the
fact that OS/2 is realistically one of the best Java platforms out there,
that a blend of the two would be perfect!

As usual though, this month's meeting will be held on the third Thursday of
the month (April 16) in room 405 of the Ohio Supercomputer Center at 1224
Kinnear Road in Columbus, Ohio.

The starting time is 7:00pm and the meeting will last until 9:00pm.

April's topic: To be Announced

What a joke:

ZD (PC Mag) Editor's Choice: Microsoft JVM for Windows

-quotes-

"OS/2 Warp showed impressive speed, but it could run only four applets
fully. And although the Netscape VM for Solaris ran all but one applet, it
failed to complete our benchmark tests."

"The Microsoft Java environment came close to a perfect score on our
compatibility tests, where it ran all but one applet each on Microsoft
Windows 95 and NT." "The Microsoft Java Virtual Machine (JVM) for Windows
was the exception, and it earns our Editors' Choice. For the second year in
a row, Microsoft has produced the fastest and most reliable Java
implementation available."

"The Microsoft environment outpaced the competition across all of our JMark
2.0 benchmark tests. It boasted the highest scores on the Processor test
under both Windows 95 and NT. Most notably, it dominated the AWT graphics
test, on which its score was almost three times as fast as its closest
competitor, the JDK 1.1.5 on Solaris."

-end quotes-

(Of course they had to code their own biased JMark bechmark to give
Microsoft JVM the best results, and we all know that a magazine managed my
M.J. Miller cannot have any praising words, much less an Editor's Choice,
to OS/2, since he declared OS/2 dead and Windows Everywhere as his belief.)

Have a laugh, look at why "Write Once Run Everywhere still does not work".
The best defects they were able to get were... AN OVERSIZED BUTTON and a
button bar OVERLAP. Oh God... it is horrible, who could use Java with such
BUGS?

(BTW: On my P200MMX 512k cache system (1024x768x65k video, s3 3.03.16
drivers) I get a Caffeinemark 2.5 index of 374. Anyone else cares to post
their results on different video/cpu hardware?).

Cheers,

Fernando

Well, the new IBM High-Performance Java Compiler has been updated to version
1.1b, and updated FIRST on the OS/2 platform. It supports most of the Java
1.1.1 language except some of the dynamic bytecode definition classes. ODBC
connectivity now works wonderfully!

Comparatively speaking, the speed of compiled Java code talking to and doing
database processing via ODBC to DB2 is now *faster* than the speed obtained
by using REXX. (Rexx code is several times faster than equivalent Java
bytecode).

Of course, it is no where near the speed of native code (in C or PL/I) using
static SQL.

It can compile CM30, but not run it properly, however.

"The best intranet server operating system around just might be OS/2.
Seriously."

Microsoft got caught out commisioning PR agencies to mount a campaign to
write letters to the editors in favour of MS. But what's new in that, they
have been doing it for years, in print media as well in on-line
conferences, like the infamous "Steve Barkto" on the Canopus forum.

Looking in the Communique magazine, looks like they started early in
Australia:

"Many thanks to Bill Gates and the people at Microsoft for their wonderfull
product, Windows95. What a truly inspired product."

Shocking news about MS in LA Times..

__________Berst Alert____________________ BILL'S BIGGEST MISTAKE EVER?

http://www.zdnet.com/chkpt/adt0413ba/www.anchordesk.com/story/story_1975.html

It's come to this: Bill Gates would rather spend Microsoft's money on
lawyers, spin doctors and PR firms than focus on building better software. I
say Bill's stubborn insistence that the rules don't apply to him will mire
his company in endless lawsuits. But maybe there's a way to get Microsoft
back on track. Come to the Web site, read both sides, then vote in our Quick
Poll. I'll personally deliver the results to Microsoft's top executives.
Even if you disagree with me.
