OS/2 News, Views & PRs 18/5/97

nobody uses OS/2 episode #1789

The Alley Cat was in a Sydney pub last week, when he struck conversation
with a fellow sitting in a corner starring intensly into his notebook.

It turned out this fellow works for Aristocrat Gaming, who are supplying
gaming equipment to NSW pubs. The entire management systems is a
sophisticated drag'n'drop OS/2 PM application running on Warp Server and
OS/2 PCs.

One thing this fellow couldn't figure out, though, was how come whilst the
entire systems was developed and runs on OS/2, he has to use Windoze on his
notebook.

The Alley Cat couldn't figure that out either, and neither could I.

unexplained delay after delay after delay after delay to WordPro/2:
further to our suggestion to write to Lotus, George told me:

Oh boy,

this is an attractive young lady with mesmerising eyes and you might understandably
wish to contact her via e-mail, voice mail, fax, phone, or even personaly,
provided you do not really want an answer. Since the Darling Harbour PC
Show in March last year, where she offered to find out more for me about
AmiSlow character sets; her demo on AmiSlow in the SPCUG OS/2 SIG, where
she was distributing her business cards and invited beta testers; and also
2 e-mails afterwords, I am yet to receive any reply. Probably my type of
very small business / home user is not too high on her agenda.

She is otherwise consistent with the rest of the IBM and Lotus Mailto:
addresses, where the standard answer to my modest question of 'will there
ever be a decent SmartSuite for OS/2?' is a univocal "" , i.e.
or no response whatsoever which, for the OS/2 toolkit inclined, can also
be expressed as

static const char* const pcszThe0String( '\0' );

On a higher note, if you are after some concrete and factual, albeit uncharacteristic
to Lotus numerical values, the SmartSuite">http://www2.lotus.com/smartsuite/os2.nsf/a1d792857da52f638525630f004e7ab8/244e9dea44d8f8ae8525646e007ae465?OpenDocument">SmartSuite
97 for Warp 4 page is currently laud about some 125 programmers who
are all working on this project.

We all know that the full version will be out 'next quarter'. What a leap
year, this next quarter spans over 4 calendar years now. Obviously, Lotus
does not measuere time in web years.

Thanks, George. I thought it was actually Kim Medway who was at the SIG ?
I suppose we should email both Nicole and Kim_Medway@lotus.com

Unsatified by response(s) from IBM Oz, Phil Long has sighted on a further
target:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
To:michael_lawrie@vnet.ibm.com

Dear Michael,

Our company has used OS/2 for years.
I am becoming disturbed by recent events including the closure of
Describe Inc.
We are totally dependant on Describe.
I am aware that it is an extremely difficult time for all. Microsoft
has so much marketing punch, along with the uncanny ability to lower
peoples expectations of how computing should be (they are suppressing
all other marketers/developers and their technology).

I have been waiting for the support to happen for your product Visualage
Java for OS/2. At this time I have only seen the win stuff. When will
IBM release the code for this? if ever. It is extremely frustrating to
be involved with OS/2 as most people I speak to have never heard of it.

IMB must surely not be neglecting their small to medium customers. We
have all been so patient, waiting waiting whilst IBM release products
for Windows. I believe this action to be in contempt of their own loyal
customers. Even with Lotus here in Australia there is no coordination
or sound knowledge of future events or personal care (very blaize).
When asked of the availability of the wholley native Smartsuite for
OS/2, their comments range from Feb 97 to no comment or not at all,
depending on who you speak to. Does IBM or Microsoft own Lotus?. You
would imagine, going on the tone of the customer query line people, that
they do in fact work for Microsoft.

Now I find that Creative has dropped OS/2 like a hot potato. One does
wonder.
See http://www.creaf.com/wwwnew/tech/faqs/os2sup.html.

IBM has the perfect opportunity at this time to promote OS/2 as most
companies I know would gladly swap from the win counterparts. Windows
is not stable enough to be utilized for Power usage. Nor has it the
interactivity and sophistication of OS/2's long standing development and
objectology.
I could go on and on.

Why doesn't IBM simply advertise, advertise simply, just a little to
esoteric in the past, although I am also aware that all previous
marketing was aimed at corporate.

OS/2 is the only/best platform suitable for business. All IBM has to
realise is that it is in fact their product and not B. Gates's. As an
outsider point of view, They surely treat it like it is not an IBM
product.

I need to know these things.
I have moved many businesses both large and small to your most glorious
platform. Not one has ever looked back. However should confidence not
be reinstated in the eyes of the end user. WE WILL ALL WALK AWAY.

Remember, Corporate begins with small businesses that grow. If IBM goes
in the direction they are currently pursuing, they will surely loose
more and more market share. Once these companies move to a given
platform, it becomes very difficult to change. Especially with the way
Microsoft refuses to acknowledge any other ISV's operating systems or
software and the export of data. They make it very difficult to move
without great loss of time and money.
They are not very friendly!.

You then arrive at the other problem, that once people learn a given
software package or system, they will forever more refuse the change. I
have seen people sit back in front of great machine and say, I can't be
bothered. This attitude is what Microsoft relies on.

Love to hear a reply from IBM without a cop-out for once.

That is why I write to you personally.

You may reach me on pglong@ibm.net. Feel free.

Phil Long

Mr. Long,

Your letter has been received by Mr. Lawrie's office and is currently being
reviewed. It is our hope to provide a response to you by the end of next
week.

Thank you.

Only if you and I and everyone else we know switches to it!

Think about it this way:

OS2 has been on the market for close to 10 years.

IBM marketed it to the small office/home office/home computer
user with ads on TV and in other "odd places" for perhaps 2 of
those 10 years. It just so happened that those two years
coincided with fantastic growth in the OS2 market.

As for the IBM PC Co. not preloading OS2, I missed the comments
that mentioned that this is the same company that has switched
sales strategies with each different season? Remember Ambra?, the
Micro Channel licensing boondoggle?, and stunning price gaps?

Speaking of hardware, *Junk* hardware has proliferated far beyond
my realization, and I expect that IBM is glad to not have to
choke on support for a lot of the garbage that is out there. I
know I would look for a quick way to end that sort of agony.

To cap things off, IBM seems to be continuing development to
allow them to capitalize on any serious weakness in Mr. Bill's
juggernaut. Is IBM's tactic anything like Russia waiting for
winter when a war is going badly for them?

To me, OS2 seems less dead than in the early years when it didn't
do many of the things I use it for today. I just finished and
submitted a graphically heavy report, OS2 did fine- Slightly
over 100 MB of files, one 25 MB Describe document, 75 MB of
scanned photos etc., and a few MB of CAD drawings from nothing to
done in 20 hours over 3 days time.

Win 3.1/95 would have choked bigtime, and my CAD program won't /
can't / never will run above 640 x 480 with Win NT.

I wrote the ZDBOp people about the issue of 32bit testing. This is their

David,

ZD does not offer a desktop benchmark for OS/2 systems. However, OS/2 may
be tested as a server using ServerBench 4.0. You can order ServerBench
4.0 at http://www.zdbop.com/reqfrm.html

The ZD PC Benchmarks also run on Windows NT 3.51 and Windows NT 4.0 (which
are completely 32-bit operating systems) in addition to Windows 95.

If you are interested in Pentium II performance issues, you may want to
read the articles on ZDNet (http://www.zdnet.com) or get the latest issue
of PC Magazine.

The os/2 list server people have been saying that the Benchmarks that you
use are useless to judge how a machine or processor (pentium II) will
perform under os/2 because the test run under windows 95 and windows 95 is
half 16bit. I was wondering about this issue and if you would like to
respond.

THREE THINGS GAMERS MUST KNOW BEFORE INVESTING IN MMX

http://www.anchordesk.com/story/story_922.html

MMX is touted as the next great thing for gamers.
But developers say the new chip offers more hype
than hope. GameSpot's Vince Broady surfs the wave
of skepticism rising around MMX. Then tells you what
you *really* need to improve your system for gaming.

More battle of the sexes humour everyone...

------------
1. How Dogs and Men Are the Same

Both take up too much space on the bed.
Both have irrational fears about vacuum cleaning.
Both are threatened by their own kind.
Both mark their territory.
Both are bad at asking you questions.
Neither tells you what's bothering them.
Both have an inordinate fascination with women's crotches.
Neither does any dishes.
Both fart shamelessly.
Neither of them notice when you get your hair cut.
Both like dominance games.
Both are suspicious of the postman.
Neither knows how to talk on the telephone.
Neither understands what you see in cats.

2. How Dogs Are Better than Men

Dogs do not have problems expressing affection in public.
Dogs miss you when you're gone.
Dogs feel guilt when they've done something wrong.
Dogs don't criticize your friends.
Dogs admit when they're jealous.
Dogs are very direct about wanting to go out.
Dogs do not play games with you -- except fetch (and they
never laugh at how you throw).
Dogs don't feel threatened by your intelligence.
You can train a dog.
Dogs are easy to buy for.
You are never suspicious of your dog's dreams.
The worst social disease you can get from dogs is fleas.
(OK, the "really" worst disease you can get from this is
rabies, but there's a vaccine for it, and you get to kill
the one that gives it to you).
Dogs understand what no means.
Dogs understand if some of their friends cannot come
inside.
Middle-aged dogs don't feel the need to abandon you for a
younger owner.
Dogs admit it when they're lost.
Dogs are color blind.
Dogs aren't threatened if you earn more than they do.
Dogs mean it when they kiss you.

3. Where Dogs Fall Down

Men only have two feet that track in mud.
Men can buy you presents.
Men don't have to play with every man they see when you take
them around the block.
Men are a little more subtle.
Men don't eat turds on the sly.
Dogs have dog breath all the time.
Men can do math stuff.
Men don't shed as much, and if they do, they hide it.
It's fun to dry off a wet man.
