An interesting source, considering Merisel went out of business *precisely*
as a result of Win95 failing to sell through the reseller channels.
It's probably not a well know fact, BUT Merisel had nearly $A500,000 worth
of Win95 returned for credit from retail, and that was the last straw that
broke it's back. Merisel's Hot List has not been published for couple of

Will Z. & OS/2 in PCWeek
Stanley Sidlov 75056,3347

Simply unable after almost two years to shake his former association with
OS/2, Will's name appeared in a column in this week's PCWeek. (
http://www8.zdnet.com/pcweek/opinion/0818/18mind.html ) The Louderback
byline graces a 'fantasy' calendar of Bill Gates' upcoming schedule where in
September '98 (perhaps even on the 11th anniversary of OS/2's GA) Will and
'the last three TeamOS/2 members not switched to NT' feed the last copy of
OS/2 to a nurse shark with Bill looking on.

Will, you have to be more public about your change of opinion!

regarding Alley Cat's report in a recent issue:

> IBM had a large stand at the InterNet World Australia.

I take exception to the "no OS/2" statement. Even 'though OS/2 wasn't
featured as such (neither was Windows - we were emphasising e-Business
SOLUTIONS), I was on the IBM stand from beginning to end (except when I
snuck out for a cigarette) and was demonstrating VisualAge for Java on an
OS/2 machine. I got a lot of positive feedback, particularly from University
students who were blown away by VisualAge for Java, especially the $49
Academic price. I also had at least half a dozen people during the show
asking about OS/2. In addition, I gave four "Java Introduction"
presentations on the IBM stage where I not only gave a Java intro for
non-techos but also constructed an application in front of the audience's
very eyes - got lots of applause for this. During the show, I mentioned I
was using OS/2.

Ian Morphett
Desktop Software Strategist
IBM Australia

(but this just proves how dangerous cigarettes are... )
If this was anyone else from IBM, I doubt I would have believed them, but
Ian, despite being an IBM employee, does use OS/2, and is of great
assistance to Sydney SIG as well as other OS/2 venues.
our applogies to Ian.

Warpstock '97 Update
Larry Finkelstein 76702,1354

Warpstock '97 is only eight weeks away and we have some exciting events
lined up. The conference will take place October 25 and 26 of this year
outside of Los Angeles at the AQMD in Diamond Bar, California. Visit
http://www.warpstock.org for full details of this OS/2 community event.

With so little time left before the conference, weekly updates will be
posted on several sites as well as full details on the Warpstock home page,
http://www.warpstock.org.

Here's a summary to bring you up to date.

Discounted travel arrangements can be made through Ship and Shore Travel
Agency. The Clarion Hotel in Diamond Bar, CA, is also offering a discount to
Warpstock attendees. Be sure to make your reservations early. You may also
arrange for childcare during the conference. Details and form available on
homepage.

Discussions with IBM continue as plans are made for the company's
participation.

Stardock Systems announced plans to exhibit and sponsor a games contest. The
games contest will feature B.U.G.S. and Entrepreneur with prizes awarded for
high scores. Brad Wardell of Stardock Systems will present a seminar based
on his "Past, Present and Future OS/2" series. He will also present new
material at Warpstock.

True Spectra announced plans to exhibit at Warpstock. They will be showing
off Photo>Graphics and Photo>Graphics Pro. Special show prices will be
offered. Terry Hamilton will present a seminar on using Photo>Graphics. This
will help the attendee to learn some of the finer points of using
Photo>Graphics.

Michael Kaply, Technical Lead of Netscape Communicator for OS/2, will
present a seminar on Netscape Communicator for OS/2. Mike is an IBM
developer working at Netscape.

Whew, tired yet? Well it's time for some fun.

Hethmon Brothers, developers of Internet software for OS/2, and F/X
Communications, developers of InJoy, will sponsor a Saturday night social
event. Stan Ruffo and Martin Pugh, one of the hottest acts on the national
blues circuit, will perform for an enthusiastic Warpstock crowd on October
25. Stan and Martin's music has been described as blues, but includes
strains of swing, rock & roll, rockabilly, jazz, and Latin. It all adds up
into some fresh and exciting music for OS/2 lovers.

There are several vendors and speakers that have confirmed their
participation. We're working with many others and they will be posted when
confirmed. We still have open topics, so if you're interested in presenting
a particular topic or if there's a topic that you would like to suggest,
contact Kevin Royalty, os2guy@one.net.

We are still in need of volunteers. Warpstock is a 100% volunteer effort.
You may volunteer as much or as little of your time as your schedule allows.
Please check out the volunteer link on the Warpstock homepage and help us
make Warpstock a complete success.

See you at Warpstock,

Warpstock Steering Committee

What's in the Name WorkSpace On-Demand

.. it's more straightforward to explain why IBM has chosen
the name WorkSpace On-Demand for the newest member of its eNetwork
Software family. Actually, WorkSpace On-Demand belongs to the
"On-Demand" branch, which includes the Java-based emulator, IBM Host
On-Demand. The On-Demand initiative comprises technologies and
products that deliver real-time server-based components (e.g. data or
applications) immediately upon client request.

WorkSpace On-Demand as a NOS (network operating system) that will
help OS/2 users move from a client-server computing environment to a
network computing infrastructure supporting 100% Pure Java.

InformationWeek: IBM Readying WorkSpace On-Demand, August 27, 1997

PC Week On-line: IBM to ship WorkSpace On-Demand for OS/2 Warp Server
by Michael Moeller, August 27, 1997
This electronic article explains WorkSpace On-Demand as bridging "the
gap between users who need only Java-based applications that can run
on IBM's Network Stations and users who need to have all of their
computing resources locally stored."

Reuters, August 26, 1997
This quick blurb mentioned that IBM will conduct a series of
three-day, no-charge WorkSpace On-Demand workshops in major cities
around the world.

The WorkSpace On-Demand announcement also received coverage in
American Banker Magazine, the San Francisco Examiner, and the Ottawa
Citizen.

OS/2 CD Player
Reply-to: NOSPAMmlinder@ibm.net (Matt)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
CDPLR100.ZIP is a new cd audio player for os/2. This program is shareware
and not crippled in any way. It can be located at http://hobbes.nmsu.edu
under /pub/os2/apps/mmedia/cdplayer

A few of the cd player's features: PM, multi-threaded, volume control,
continuious play till end of cd, auto stop ,seek, scan and track controls.

This cd player will allow you to continue working with your desktop, while
the cd is being read by os/2.

It was written by myself after I purchased warp 4.0 because I thought that
the cd player included needed too much cpu power for what it did.

Fernando Cassia"
OS/2 4.1: it's here already, IBM!

I've just realized ALL the stuff I had to update over the original warp
4.0 install to get what is now a very stable and powerful, useable
system... and it's a *LOT*!. Thanks God it's a single system (I have
other os/2 systems but this is the only one at warp 4.0 level).

Just imagine if IBM packaged together...

- Warp 4.0 fixpack 3 code level
(finally a stable system!, this is what warp 4.0 should have been
with enough testing)
- The latest tcpip fixes (v4rsu stuff)
- Java 1.1.1
- The latest (very good imho) S3 3.03.16 drivers
- 32-bit CHKDSK
- Adobe's OS/2 Acrobat Reader 3.0
- Netscape/2 (july 97 build, with all the bugfixes)
- The IBM plugins for Netscape/2,
- Colin Hildinger's integrated SBINSTALL package with Creative's utils
and latest drivers
- The third-pary fix for the 'image association' bug

All this is what I had to install to get a workable system. Just compare
this with the late 96 Warp 4.0 build on the CD: buggy code (not only the
number of APARs but the quality of the bugs, like the 'large hard disk
bug'), SLOW, almost not useable Java 1.0.1, no Netscape, etc.

Imho, these enhancements alone could justify a point increase in the version
number, as this system level is MUCH better than the nov96 build.

I'm just dreaming, I know... but think if IBM would put this into a CD (I'm
not thinking of new boxes and manuals, just a pressing of a couple thousand
CDs just like all those free demo CDs like "Experience Internet Explorer
4.0" or the AOL software that you get in the mail. (I've heard it costs less
than $5 a pop to press).

They could call it "WARP 4.1 update" and sell it for a few bucks to current
Warp 4.0 customers (I'd pay up to $50 to have all this in a single install
to save a lot of time and effort). Also, distributing this to the media
would get some positive comments and "mindshare" on the press. "IBM releases
OS/2 4.1: bugfixes and a faster Java implementation". Just think all the
media coverage M$ got by releasing win95 "OSR2" only with a few new drivers
and fat32.

... of course doing this involves some risk, and sometimes IBM, for what
I've seen lately, wants to avoid all risks... spending a 5-digit figure for
pressing CDs is a bold and dangerous move. ;-)

The worst thing is that ALL THE CODE is already here... the only thing
they'd need to do is to recreate the Warp 4.0 cd with the current code
builds.

It's not NEW CODE DEVELOPMENT, it's REPACKAGING and a couple of press
releases!.

Just my $0.02

---------------------------------------------------------------------
The following new Internet software versions are available NOW at
http://www.dataline.ch/~rch/

Binary Newsreader (BNR) Version 1.26 (Shareware)
------------------------------------
The Binary Newsreader (BNR) is designed for easy downloading and decoding
single- and multipart binary files which are UUE- or BASE64 encoded from
Internet newsgroups. BNR receives, connects and decodes the posts from a
newsgroup and delivers ready-to-use binary files. EXACTLY! It's made for all
those alt.binaries... newsgroups. BNR recognizes and connects multipart
files!
You don't have to connect posts that are made of more than one part. BNR
delivers a ready-to-use binary file. Additional features: Filters,
blocklist,
scripts, SOCKS firewall support and much more...

Binary HTTP Reader Pre-version 0.76 (Free for BNR users)
----------------------------------
The Binary HTTP Reader makes it easy to download tons of files from the
World
Wide Web (WWW). Have you ever tried to download a bulk of binaries from a
Web
site? Of course you have! You have to crawl through dozens of webpages, you
receive megs of bytes you really don't want (logos, advertising info etc)
until you finally reach the file- list. After this, you have to download
each
of your binaries manually (one by one) and store it on your system. Well,
this
can take a while... The HTTP Reader makes it easy to download binary files
like PICTURES, AUDIO FILES, MOVIES and other binaries like SOFTWARE, ZIPs
etc
from Webservers multithreaded, fast and efficient...

TCP/IP Portscanner Version 1.40 (Freeware)
-------------------------------
This software scans well known TCP/IP ports of one or more servers for
active
services. You can specify a single server name (e.g. www.myserver.com) or a
range of IP-Addresses (e.g. from 192.85.184.12 to 192.85.184.66). Active
port
numbers are being listed with the name of the service commonly used on this
port.

You can also take in inventory of your IP addresses using the new PING
function for an entire range of IP-addresses.

Network Time Protocol (NTP) Client Version 1.04 (Freeware)
----------------------------------------------
The Network Time Protocol (NTP) Client connects to a time server through the
Internet, gets the current time and adjusts the clock of your OS/2 machine
using the system DATE function. This version supports both TIME and DAYTIME
servers!

POP3 Spy Version 1.3 (Freeware)
--------------------
Are you tired of checking your E-Mail every few minutes ? You do not want to
have your E-Mail Client running all the time to keep you informed about
incoming mail? POP3 Spy is a small program which checks your mail every few
minutes and informs you in many different visual or acoustic ways.

Any questions? You can reach me at ralf.christen@ibm.net

J-POP Server allows remote users to retrieve email from your computer using
the standard Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3). This Server is entirely
written in Java, which means that it will run on ANY system that supports
Java 1.0.2 or higher.

Additional security is build-in. J-POP can be configured to deny access to
all internet hosts except those explicitly allowed. J-POP also supports the
APOP authentication mechanism so that users don't have to send their
passwords over the network.

J-POP comes with a graphical user interface (GUI) for management of the
server. This makes easy to add and delete users, and control the various
features of J-POP. Through this GUI, an administrator can add, delete and
modify users, change configuration options on the server, and update which
hosts are allowed to access the server. After making changes through the
GUI, there is no need to restart the server, it detects these changes
automatically.

Complies with all of the Internet Engineering Task Force's (IETF)
specifications for POP3. This includes RFC1939, RFC1725, RFC1460, RFC1225,
and RFC1081.

All optional POP3 commands specified in RFC1939 are supported, and can be
individually enabled or disabled. This gives you control over how the server
interacts with clients. The supplied documentation describes each of these
options in detail.

Included with J-POP is the QYPMAIL archive, which allows an OS/2 system to
act as a multi-user mail server. QYPMAIL sorts incoming mail into user's
mailboxes as it comes in, so that it is then ready for retrieval with J-POP.

Unregistered version supports up to 5 users. Registered version supports an
unlimited number of users.

J-POP can be obtained from BMT Micro.

Wake up!! CandyBarZ is here! CandyBarZ is THE titlebar replacement for
OS/2.
CandyBarZ' primary feature is gradient-filled titlebars; you choose the top
and bottom colors, and it does the rest. Both active and inactive colors
are
supported, and CandyBarZ will not muck up your titlebar text colors or
fonts.
Custom colors for individual programs are also supported.

!NEW IN VERSION 1.10!

- Horizontal gradients! They weren't as hard as I thought.
- Automatic fill options!
- 3D border highlight, a la Warp 4!
- New optimizations for both CPU and RAM usage!
- Less clutter in CBSetup! Many options have been moved to a menu
accessible via "CandyBarZ" buttons on the dialogs.
- Bug fixes. ahem....

CandyBarZ has been tested with OS/2 Warp Versions 3 and 4, but should
work with any 32-bit version of OS/2 with MMOS/2 installed.

CandyBarZ is currently available at

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/cbarz110.zip

Its eventual resting place should be

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/utils/wps/cbarz110.zip

CandyBarZ is shareware with a $7 ($10 through BMT Micro) registration
fee.

Thanks for trying CandyBarZ!

JMA SOFTWARE TECHNOLOGIES SHIPS WEBNAVIGATOR 1.13 FOR OS/2 WARP

Gotheburg, Sweden, August 9, 1996 -- Today, JMA Software Technologies
shipped
a refresh of WebNavigator. WebNavigator is a Internet web browser built to
be
compact and easy to use.

Features include online and offline browsing, news and mail support,
internal/external downloads, select a new link while a document is loading,
easy to use QuickList and others.

This version contains a fix for users with WebExplorer 1.1h. There are no
other changed compared with WebNavigator 1.12. For more information refer to
the included README.TXT file.

WebNavigator supports HTML 2.0 plus some features of HTML 3.x. Since
WebNavigator uses the same websupport as WebExplorer the level of HTML
compliance is the same as the installed version of WebExplorer.

WebNavigator requires Warp 3 or Warp 4. WebNavigator also requires that you
have installed IBM TCP/IP support and WebExplorer (to get the DLL file
WEBEXWIN.DLL that WebNavigator needs). These features are included in all
versions of Warp 3 and Warp 4.

WebNavigator 1.13 ships as Trial and Registered Editions. The Registered
Edition lists for USD $25. The Trial Edition is a free trial version that
might be evaluated in 30 days. The Trial Edition has a timeout and has
limitations on its features. Any use after the trial period requires you to
register. Unregistered use after the evaluation period is illegal.

The Trial Edition is available for download from our world wide web site and
from several public FTP sites.

NTFS-OS2 is now available in beta version 0.01.

NTFS-OS2 is CURRENTLY ONLY A COLLECTION OF TOOLS to access a Windows NT file
system (NTFS) in read-only mode.

If there is enough interest for a ntfs-IFS I'll port the original Linux ntfs
code from M. Loewis to OS/2 using mwdd32 device driver from M. Willm.

nts-os2.ifs will be a file system driver that allows OS/2 to seamlessly
access
Windows NT ntfs partitions in both read and maybe write modes.

Once installed, NTFS partitions would appear as standard OS/2 drive letters,
one per NTFS partition.

You can find it at the usual FTP sites (or in their incoming directory) :

Mike Lawrie to speak

We OS/2 users have plenty of questions. We want to know what IBM is doing to
enhance the technology. We're intensely interested in IBM's marketing
strategy
for the operating system. And we're especially interested in the plans the
company has to serve our needs.

On Tuesday, September 9, we'll have the opportunity to get straight answers
from the guy in charge.

The guest for the Phoenix OS/2 Society's general meeting will be J. Michael
("Mike") Lawrie, the General Manager of the IBM Personal Software Products
Division (IBM PSP). That's the big kahuna, the top dog, the big cheese.
Lawrie
is responsible for management of the PSP division and for the marketing and
development of the OS/2 Warp family of operating system products. That
includes OS/2 Warp, OS/2 Warp Server, and Directory and Security Server for
OS/2. He was named to this position in January 1997.

Straight talk, real issues

This isn't going to be a media circus event. No fancy hotel, no unusual
arrangements. (Well, we will have a cake to celebrate the tenth birthday of
OS/2... but we would have done that anyway.) This is simply Mike, talking
with
individual OS/2 users.

Because Mike Lawrie wanted to address the issues we care about most, I asked
Society members to submit suggestions ahead of time. In early August, I sent
the "top ten" list to Lawrie's staff; he's promised to focus on these
topics.

In case you're wondering what topics are on the "What matters most" list for
our members, here's the top three items:

* IBM: Get serious about OS/2.
* What's up with Windows support?
* Where does IBM stand with OS/2 in the small-office/home-office (SOHO)
markets, and with small and medium businesses?

Other topics prominently mentioned were: support developers; single input
queue; support for SMP; device drivers; OS/2 pre-installed on IBM computers;
multimedia support; and speech recognition.

Perhaps most importantly, Lawrie has a reputation for speaking directly and
honestly. If you think that this meeting will be full of "typical company
hype"... think again.

When and where

The Phoenix OS/2 Society meets at the Mountain Preserve Reception Center, at
1431 East Dunlap. There's a general Q&A with other users beginning at 6:30,
with the general meeting getting underway at 7. Visitors are
enthusiastically
welcome (though we're pretty sure that, by the end of the evening, you'll be
so happy that you'll plunk down the dues money.)

The Phoenix OS/2 Society is the world's largest computer user group devoted
to
OS/2. Membership ($30/year in the U.S.) includes the award winning print
magazine, _extended attributes_, product discounts, and (perhaps most
important) a voice in the OS/2 community. For more information about the
Society, visit http://www.possi.org.

Just learned that:

IBM has released a free "special edition of Object REXX for Warp 3" users.

To look for it go to Object REXX' homepage at:
http://www2.hursley.ibm.com/orexx/

or use M.F. Cowlishaw's excellent REXX homepage as a starting point to link
to
it at:
http://www2.hursley.ibm.com/rexx/

or use the RexxLA ("Rexx Language Association") as a starting point to link
to
it at:
http://www.RexxLA.org/

---

Follow either link to "Object REXX on OS/2 Warp 3.0 - SPECIAL EDITION -
August
27, 1997" and you'll get to the US download page.

[There are nice tutorials on Object REXX there as well as links to Object
REXX
books.]

So customers and ISVs wanting to deploy their Object REXX programs not only
under Warp 4, but also under Warp 3 may do so now.

For Object REXX novices there is a small (but excellent) on-line tutorial
enclosed which is named "REXXPG.INF" together with short examples of what
one
can do with OO-stuff available in REXX now.

---
Thought to share these great news about IBM's Object REXX and Warp 3.

Warpstock '97 Weekly Update

Virtual OS/2 International Consumer Education organized in 1997 as a
non-profit virtual on-line user group which was formed by a small group of
OS/2 users united with a common goal for the advancement of OS/2. Through
education, promotion, and marketing we want to increase the public
wareness/knowledge of OS/2 and see it become more widely recognized.

VOICE objectives:

1.Serve as a "virtual", on-line user group for OS/2 users, without a
local
user group, and to any other OS/2 users interested in VOICE.

2.Promote OS/2 to the SOHO [small office/home office] consumer and to
general computer users.

3.Provide an effective communication channel between members, user
groups,
ISV's [independent software vendors], and IBM.

4.To help OS/2 User Groups organize and promote their activities.
