MD+F Blitter Binary News Reader
---------------------------------------------------------------------
October 8, 1997 - Modular Dreams Incorporated today announces the release of
the MD+F Binary News Blitter utility.
MD+F Blitter is a utility which automatically downloads pictures (or other
binary files) from USENET. Features of Blitter include:
- Detailed interface displaying all actions being performed by the article
downloader and the decoding being performed, as well as an optional
preview of the image downloaded.
- Standard "newsrc" file support so you can use it and your usual newsreader
on without viewing duplicate articles.
- Easy group selection to easily find groups for downloading by searching for
expressions in their names.
- Multiple save paths that allow you to save images and rejected images in
different directories.
- Spam filtering by allowing you to skip articles by certain senders or those
containing matching characters or words in their subject line or the image's
name.
- Multi-part support by automatically storing and joining multi-part images.
- Cross-post support to reduce duplicate downloads of articles posted to
more than one group.
- Duplicate image skips. Provide a list of images and Blitter will skip
downloading them as well as add any new images to the bottom of the list.
- Low memory usage and safety features. Just start Blitter before leaving
for work or going to bed and you'll have a new collection of images waiting
for you when you next visit the program.
You can get current information about the MD+F Blitter as well as the
executable(s) from Modular Dreams at their website located at
http://www.modulardreams.com.
The website also contains usage information and screenshots of the product. To
purchase MD+F Blitter, contact your favorite online dealer. The MSRP for MD+F
Blitter is $A45.00 and the product's license allows you to use it on any
platform for which it is available. This product requires you to have
connection access to a newsreader. Like all MD+F products, you must register
this product online before using it. A reliable connection and a harddrive
with plenty of empty space is recommended,
//All Modular Dreams products are available locally through us.//

---------------------------------------------------------------------
The Binary Newsreader (BNR) Version 1.29 is available now!
The Binary Newsreader (BNR) is designed for easy downloading and decoding
single- and multipart binary files which are UUE- or BASE64 (Mime format)
encoded from Internet newsgroups. BNR receives, connects and decodes the
posts from a newsgroup and delivers ready-to-use binary files.
EXACTLY! It's made for all these alt.binaries... newsgroups.
- True 32-bit application, designed for OS/2 Warp V3 and V4
- Uses OS/2 features like multithreading, drag/drop, object oriented
execution - User-friendly configuration notebook
- BNR recognizes and connects multipart files! You don't have to connect posts
that are made of more than one part. BNR does this for you! - BNR is
multithreaded! The receiver job queue has it's own TCP/IP connection! You
can switch to another newsgroup while you are still receiving and decoding
articles from the previous newsgroup.
- Filter feature (get articles containing JPG, GIF, ZIP etc)
- BNR is SOCKSified. You can access your news server through a SOCKS
firewall.
- You can even write your own scripts to automate downloading processes.
- ...and much more...

IBM has released beta test versions of Dynamic IP client support for Windows
95 and Windows NT. The new client support allows Windows 95 and Windows NT to
not only receive numeric IP addresses dynamically but also to "resync" those
dynamic addresses with the Dynamic Domain Name Server (DDNS) capabilities in
OS/2 Warp Server. The beta versions are available on the Internet at
ftp://service.software.ibm.com/ps/products/tcpip/beta/dhcp95nt/client.
Dynamic IP capabilities relieve the burden of managing TCP/IP addresses for
each system on a network. While DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)
provides numeric TCP/IP addresses dynamically, it's only half the solution.
Modern networks demand that these numeric addresses match to plain language
addresses, and that TCP/IP name servers translate the plain language names
into numeric addresses. Without Dynamic IP, it's inconvenient (at best) to
associate ever-changing numeric addresses with the names in an ordinary static
name server.
OS/2 Warp Server (and OS/2 Warp Version 4) have had full Dynamic IP client and
server capabilities for quite some time. This beta client support for Windows
95 and Windows NT extends Dynamic IP client capabilities to those platforms,
and the software supports the Dynamic IP servers in IBM's OS/2 Warp Server and
AIX. Now network managers can save enormous amounts of time and money by
using IBM's Dynamic IP servers to automate their TCP/IP networks, providing
significant benefits even to networks consisting of non-IBM systems.
IBM's Dynamic IP implements the open, secure Internet standards for DDNS and
DHCP, reflecting IBM's continuing commitment to provide state-of-the-art
network computing enhancements.

Warpstock '97 Weekly Update
With only three weeks left until the Warpstock Conference, the Warpstock
Steering Committee is now meeting bi-weekly. We're busy trying to finalize
last minute details.
Just to let everyone know a bit of what goes on behind the scenes. The entire
event has been planned over the internet. We have a general Warpstock mailing
list and a Warpstock Steering Committee mailing list setup and plans have
blossomed from OS/2 users ideas and suggestions. We would like to thank the
WEBBnet administrators for the use of their servers. We have met weekly in IRC
sessions on the WEBBnet servers for a bit of "live" discussion and planning.
This week Lotus Development Corporation was added to our list of
presentations. They will demonstrate Lotus SmartSuite for OS/2.
Saturday night is the social event which will feature a Blues band. IBM will
be contributing a birthday cake in celebration of OS/2's tenth birthday.
For those of you that don't receive InternetWeek, you might want to check out
Paul Kapustka's Geek Week column at http://www.geekweek.com. He mentions
Warpstock and our very own Warpstock Advisor, Esther Schindler. Maybe he'll
make it to Warpstock.
If you haven't checked out the presentation page lately,
http://www.warpstock.org/presentations.html, there are some detailed
descriptions of some of the presentations.
Sundial Systems has offered discount coupons from Six Flags Magic Mountain (in
Valencia - about an hour or so from Diamond Bar). Each ticket is good for up
to 6 people and gets you $12 off per person Tue - Sat or 50% off on Sun & Mon.
A form is in place on the Entertainment page,
http://www.warpstock.org/entertainment.html, if you would like to reserve
tickets.
//there are some excellent roller coasters at Magic Mountains: Viper,
Colossus, and more, well worth a visit.//
We've had a bit of discussion going on in the general mailing list regarding
food and transportation. We do have a list of local restaurants listed at
http://www.warpstock.org/food/food.html, and there is a list for car rental
and hotel and motel accommodations. The Clarion in Diamond Bar still has some
rooms remaining for $59/night. Be sure to mention Warpstock in order to get
the discounted price.
See you at Warpstock!

Version 1.00 B3B of ProNews/2 has been released! This release is mainly to
fix problems introduced with the features added for Beta 3.
Added features:
* It is now possible to add a button to the toolbar that will open the decoded
binaries folder.
* If you hit the send button while posting (except in forwarding messages,
where this feature is disabled) and you have not changed any text you are
asked whether to send the message or cancel the send.
* Added a percentage counter to the group window filtering. With a lot of
filters in large groups you can now see the progress.
* When the list of newsgroups is refreshed the 'new groups' tab now reflects
the number of new groups.
Bug fixes and changes:

From time to time, IBM accepts applications from qualified individuals
interested in writing on various computer-related topics. IBM's ITSO
(International Technical Support Organization) publishes the famous
"redbooks," written by the residents participating in its various programs.
If you are a highly qualified individual, skilled in OS/2 Warp and/or Java
related topics, you may wish to apply for one of these residences. Usually
residents are asked to help write a new IBM redbook (or create a new edition
of a previous title). Residents work hand-in-hand with IBM experts, including
developers, and consequently often get advance information on new products.
(Confidentiality, of course, is expected during the residency.) IBM often
pays all direct expenses (travel, living, equipment, and/or materials) during
the residency, which can be either on-site (in Austin, Texas) or remote.
Residents gain valuable working knowledge (which they can apply to their own
businesses) and, of course, resume-boosting publishing experience (to help
increase employment prospects at many technology companies). Naturally,
residents are credited in the "redbook."
If you are interested in applying for such a residency, and you believe you
have the qualifications, please feel free to contact Timothy Sipples by
Internet mail at tsipple@us.ibm.com. I'm interested in hearing from people
with experience in OS/2 Warp, OS/2 Warp Server, Java (particularly on those
platforms), networking with OS/2 Warp, WorkSpace On-Demand, and other related
topics. The following current residencies *may* be available to qualified
individuals outside of IBM:
- Experiences with OS/2* Warp 4 Enterprise CID
- Warp Server Functional Enhancements (Part 2)
- Java on OS/2 Warp
For more information on IBM "redbooks," please visit

Warpstock '97 Weekly Update
There are less than four weeks until the Warpstock '97 conference. This
inaugural event is scheduled for October 25 - 26, 1997, 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m
daily. The site of the conference is the AQMD Headquarters in Diamond Bar,
California. This is located outside of Los Angeles.
The Warpstock home page, http://www.warpstock.org, offers complete details of
the conference. Secure online registration is offered by BMT Micro and there
is also information about travel and hotel accommodations, including child care

Innoval Systems Solutions, http://www.innoval.com, issued a Press Release
this week which stated that they will be releasing NetExtra2 at Warpstock 97
and demonstrating some new Java technology. InnoVal will also be demonstrating
some new Java technology that it will be employing in its upcoming Post Road
Mailer for Java.
A reporter from Internet Week contacted Esther Schindler, Warpstock Committee
Advisor, and they discussed his intent to write a column about Warpstock.
Esther stated, " He's really excited about it, because of the "by and for OS/2
users" part, and I also stressed the "arranged completely over the Internet,
untouched by human hands" angle."
We would like to thank Presenting Solutions,
http://www.presentingsolutions.com , for supporting Warpstock. Presenting
Solutions will donate two LCD Projectors that will be used during the
Warpstock Conference.
If you're interested in networking or thinking of setting up your own server
or LAN, then you'll want to be sure to attend the "Connectivity
Presentations" offered. A complete list of presentations can be found at
http://www.warpstock.org/presentations.html . There are also some topics that
have been requested by our attendees that are still open. If you would like to
present one of these topics, please contact Kevin Royalty,
os2guy@one.net .
Volunteers are still needed in several areas. Please visit

---------------------------------------------------------------------
PRESS RELEASE: IBM ANNOUNCES TCP/IP V4.1 FOR OS/2 Warp Server
Enhancements Provide Security and IP Network Management Ease
ATLANTA, October 8, 1997...IBM today announced TCP/IP Version 4.1 for
the OS/2 Warp Server family of products simplifying network
administration, improving security, and extending this capability to
Windows clients.
IBM is continuing to deliver OS/2 Warp Server capability to the Windows** 95
and NT client by extending its Dynamic IP client functionality to Windows
clients with TCP/IP V4.1. In addition, customers may experience a performance
increase in their web-serving capabilities. A 21% increase in
connections-per-second over TCP/IP V4.0 resulted from internal testing using
TCP/IP V4.1 with Notes Domino Server 4.6 on a WebStone 2.0 benchmark***. With
enhanced remote access, integrated Java capabilities, and now extended TCP/IP
support for Windows clients with increased performance, IBM is further
establishing the OS/2 Warp Server family of products as a cost-effective
server operating system for e-business solutions.
"We are building on the reliability of the OS/2 Warp platform with TCP/IP V4.1
by reinforcing IBM's pledge to offer a cost-effective, feature-complete
operating system for a network computing environment," said Steven King,
product manager for OS/2 Warp Server, IBM Personal Software Products division.
"These enhancements further strengthen OS/2 Warp Server as one of the best
options for customers working in a multiple platform environment."
Network Administrators Benefit from Dynamic IP Enhancements
TCP/IP V4.1 incorporates the Dynamic IP feature which includes Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Dynamic Domain Name System (Dynamic DNS)
technologies. Typically, network administrators must assign network IP
addresses and maintain host names at each individual computer and constantly
track changes every time a computer is either added, removed or relocated on
the network. Dynamic IP workstations automatically configure themselves for
network access and securely update their host name information. As a result,
less user or administrator intervention is required to configure computers for
network access.
- Dynamic DNS Proxy
- Incremental Zone Transfer & Checkpointing
- Reusing lease information
- IP addresses reservation -
- Duplicate IP address detection
- Enhanced TCP/IP Stack Configurable stack parameters
- Remote Configuration
- Remote installation
- Virtual Private Networks

The Command line Clipboard Access (CCA) programs are a set of shareware
programs that allow the OS/2 user to access the OS/2 clipboard from the
command line in a full screen or windowed OS/2 session. They support pipes and
redirection.
These programs do not make any changes to the OS/2 INI files or create any
additional files on your hard drives. To install them, just copy the three
executable files to a directory in your OS/2 search path.
The shareware version of these programs are fully functional, but they add an

//this is GREAT utility, I use it all the time//

The POP3Spy V1.4 is available now!
What this software does
-----------------------
Are you tired of checking your E-Mail every few minutes ?
You do not want to have your E-Mail Client running all the time to keep
you informed about incoming mail ?
The POP3 Spy is a small program which checks your mail every few minutes
and informs you in many different ways:
- The window interior displays the number of messages on your mail server. The
window is red if you don't have messages on your server and it turns to
green as soon as there is at least on message on your server. It is not
necessary to see the entire window; if you can see a small part of it, you
see if there is some mail waiting.
- The icon changes. When running this program minimized, you can check the
icon on your desktop. The window title also tells you how many messages are
waiting.
- The software can inform you by playing a tune using the system speaker.
- It can even automatically launch your E-Mail client

Opera Summary
=============
Opera, our advanced Internet/Intranet browser, is developed in Norway. It is
user-friendly, versatile, fast and has numerous unique and sophisticated
features. Multiple Windows, even at startup! Runs on 'slow' PCs as well as
fast! Full keyboard interface allows for fun, easy and efficient surfing. Gone
are the days when surfing meant putting your arm out of practice the next day.
Customizable user interface. Advanced Multimedia features. Standard and
enhanced HTML. Advanced User Interface. We really care. A number of features
useful for people with a handicap. Opera works very well as a front end for
CD-ROMS. The ultimate kiosk. Useful features for Intranet usage. Opera is
written from scratch and is not based on the code of Mosaic or any other
browser. Opera can run independently under Windows 3.1/95/NT and does not
require Win32s.
Company Info
============
Opera Software A/S is based in Oslo, Norway. It has been founded in 1994 by
Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner and Geir Ivarsoy, who then worked for the
Norwegian Telecommunication company 'Telenor'. Their vision was to create an
Internet and Multimedia client that can be used by all computer users -
including those with older machines and those with physical disabilities. The
result was 'Opera', the most amazing software product in its category. Jon and
Geir, together with a team of highly qualified programmers, marketers and
translators, are now set to make a significant impact on a market dominated by
two monoliths - Microsoft and Netscape.
My Idea:
=====
I have an idea; many folks ask us about a native Mac and OS/2 version, but we
don't have enough funds to dedicate coders to these projects at the moment. So
I came up with this: we set up two 'trust' accounts, monitored by a chartered
accountant (company). Then we go to the Mac and OS/2 folks and say to them:
"if you want us to develop a native version, why don't you put your money
where your mouth is? Go to that site, fill in the registration form together
with your CC payment of $35, and the money will ONLY be used to pay the
programmers working on Mac or OS/2 version respectively. This way we will make
sure your needs are met in the shortest possible time, and as when the program
comes out, you obviously get it for free - and the regular price will be $45
instead of the $35 you paid in advance. In short, it's a win-win-win
situation, because you win (you get the browser), we win (we can market it
much earlier) and the platform wins too."
We only need app. 3.000 people to register for each platform. This will
generate app $100.000 for which you can pay the coders to start. Do you think
they will 'go for it'?
I know the Mac users are peeved off with M$IE, and the OS/2 users are peeved
off with Netscape, which is slow, bloated and crash-prone.
This could be THE SOLUTION to beat both companies on both platforms! Let me
know what you think ASAP, as I want to go ahead with it, but would appreciate
your input.
