OS/2 News, Views and PRs 18-7-97

in the current issue of Moz, Richard Ashton reviews Internet telephony and
faxing, using OzEmail's non-PC service. But Richard, did you know
about Internet faxing using off the shelf PMFax/FaxWorks and PRM/PPM/MR2 ?
(See below for a user story, and for how to do it, see:

NT: the future of computing.

Dr Rod Milton is one of the top forensic psychologists who assisted in
solving some of Australia's most baffling cases.

But this is one buffling case he can't figure out:

Neither Dr Milton nor his wife can understand why they cannot buy an IBM
PC with OS/2 on it.

When Mrs Milton called IBM about buying some IBM-brand PCs, and told them
she wants OS/2 on them, she was told they only come with NT. IBM rep also
told her:

"You should get NT, it's better than OS/2".

Is it better ? she asked.

"Oh yes, a lot better", she was told.

NT: No Thanks

Ingo Rahn

I emailed you a while back, about how I was being forced to Windows since
there's no professional 3D Animation or Video editing software for Warp...
So I was thinking of losing OS/2 and switching completely to Windows.

Well, I attempted to change completely to Windows NT... However... after a
month of it... I'm back to using OS/2 for everything BUT graphics... Windows
NT 4 is nice to look at and it only locked up on me once in that time (sure
plenty of applications crashed but I've only had to press the reset button
once)...

There were so many things I missed in Warp, so I won't bore you with the
details... so many little things in OS/2 I now realize, I was taking for
granted.

I also couldn't find a decent mail program for Windows... Eudora Pro DOES
NOT multi-thread, so I can't read and reply to my mail as it's being
retrieved. I subscribe to a mailing list which I get about 200 email
messages from every day, so I want to have that ability.

I had to try using Windows 95 also (I have used it many times before, but
not for work), as I have some peripherals that don't have NT drivers... but
the fact that 95 doesn't support HPFS (I have NT4 on a HPFS drive by the
way) and that 95 was locking up on me at least 8 times a day, while doing
things NT wouldn't have a problem with, ruled Windows 95 out as a serious
contender for my desktop.

Currently the only thing I see that NT has going for it, is it's stability
(and of course 3D/Video applications).... but other than that, everyone
seems to be using Windows 95 - the platform I now absolutely hate because of
the instability it's shown on my PC.

enough... on to another subject - With regard to: IBM abandons OS/2 as a
voice platform.

How can they do this?!?!?!??!!

I've used VoiceType since it needed a hardware card and was called ???? (I
can't remember what it was called IPDS or something...) but it's always
worked better in OS/2 than in Windows... it was always better at keeping up
with me in OS/2 than in Windows - Also, it would definitely require less RAM
etc in OS/2 than in NT (just like everything else - eg. Lotus Notes)

>This morning Bill Gates was on Nickleodeon's "Nick for Kids" ... or
>whatever it's called ... the show Linda Ellerbe (sp?) does as a news show
>for kids. "Speech" technology was one of his main topics about the
>_future_.

Of course ;) it doesn't exist and people don't want it until Microsoft do
it. 8*)

>While it seems that "the world is going to NT" (why? because everyone says
>so...), it seems that for my personal use it is a poor choice. For future
>business, yes, everyone is getting on the bandwagon, so don't be left in
>the dust.

Funny that... this is what you would think... reading all the magazines and
the rubbish the press puts out... but, where are all the drivers? I've used
OS/2 since 2.0 beta and trying to move to NT seems so familiar when it comes
to looking for device drivers for all your peripherals... it's taken me
months to buy a flatbed scanner (the higher end SCSI scanners were out of my
budget)... and if you go into your local store here in SE QLD and ask if
something has NT drivers - you get the same look you get as when you mention
OS/2!

Everyone's saying NT's the future but when new hardware gets released you
generally can only use it in Windows 95... seems to me 95 is the only
platform currently getting any real support... So (other than for graphics)
I've figured, If I'm going to have hassles with drivers etc in NT, I might
as well go back to Warp. With all the problems I've had with Warp, it's
still the only OS with the WPS.

regards,
Ingo.

---Dictated using OS/2 Warp 4.0's VoiceType Dictation.---
---------------------------------------------------------

I have said it many times:

I have looked at length at a number of NT productivity apps like email and
fax.

These are so far behind their OS/2 counterparts, it's not funny.
The biggest problem is, the developers of Win products:

don't know what threads are
don't know how to program threads

and, most importantly,

don't know *WHY* to use threads.

They'll figure it out one day, eventually.
Till then I am stuck with OS/2 - (even if I didn't like it)

It's not: is this 32-bit ? BUT: is it MULTI-THREADED ?
Simply recompiling with 32-bit compilers and labeling:
"New Fully 32 bit" is fine with magazine editors, but not here.

> is it possible to re-enable PCL fax printer driver support,
> WITHOUT reinstalling FaxWorks, after I did desktop 'rollback' and lost
> installed FaxWorsk, I re-created Faxw object, works fine, but printer
> driver PCL option is greyed out ...

Yes. The v3 printer driver figures out that is has the PCL option by looking
for the LaserFax subdirectory under the directory in which the active copy of
FxPrint.DRV is located.

If we install everything, we actually run FxPrint.DRV from the FaxWorks/PMfax
program directory, so the LaserFax subdirectory is just under that.

But if you let the Workplace Shell install the printer driver, then it puts a
copy of it somewhere else, such as under OS2/DLL.

If you can find the active copy of FxPrint.DRV and xcopy the LaserFax
subdirectory under it, it should see it and work OK.

Internet Faxing
A.C. Flinton 100431,2725

To: All

Dear All,

If any of you run more than one office esp. where each office is in a
different country, & you run OS/2 at each end then have you tried playing
with PMFAX and PMMAIL (or MR2I or PostRoad Mailer).

We have absolutely decimated our UK<->Russia faxing costs.

It is the work of moments to get the PMFax at each end to mail the other any
received faxes. It is also possible to synch on sent faxes.

PMFAX sends the fax as an attachment to PM Mail (in my case). PMMAIL then
mails the faxes to Russia. The faxes can then be shoved straight into PM Fax
at yon end.

Really dead neat.

What is more for intranet/internet faxing between people in the same
company, you can simply print your doc to fax, and then send to an E Mail
address. You can set it up easily such that the header can direct the fax
(e.g. "EMAIL FAX ACF" will get a fax to me.)

Last but not least is security.

PMMAil integrates very well with PGP. Each EMAIL FAX can be PGP tagged for
authenticity or even wholly scrambled.

My only thought at the moment is whether we can use at least part of each
PGP tag for document naming as it would make a great primary key.

For those of you with Domino 4.5 I believe it should be possible for you to
also CC a copy to a Notes Database (via POP). Simple to do, as you can set
multiple filters each with a series of six actions (inc running REXX
scripts).

For even greater consistency, you could send a copy of the fax log from this
end at the end of every batch of EMailed faxes.

And expect any differences to be mailed back to you, such that the two logs
can be kept automatically in synch.

I am dead impressed, as this has saved us a lot of money as faxes for people
in Russia can be sent by our Russian Office automatically with the content
generation done in the UK. And vice versa.

And I can send voice Mails with it.

Advantages are that it's cheap (2X PMFax = Circa 120 UKL) (2X PMMAil = circa
UKL 80 I think, as we bought some copies of PMMAil & MR2I some time back).
So if you have a PC with a modem and copy of OS/2 installed, an Inet account
at each end, and have not yet bought either product simply because they're
good products, then for about UKL 200 you get to cut down your International
Faxing to near zero. What is more, you can do cheapest route faxing (cheaper
to call Latvia from Moscow as from the UK).

Merely a thought to anyone who likes to save unnecessary expenditure.

Great for management too as we now have at least part of an automated
daybook covering both the UK and Moscow offices.

FxEmail for OS/2 (internet faxing)

----------------------------------------------------------------
FxEmail for OS/2.

A free standing email helper app for internet faxing with FaxWorks Pro.

FxEmail will mime encode your fax (alternative uuencode) and send it out via
SMTP to any internet address simply by using that internet address in lieu of
a phone number in version 3+ of FaxWorks Pro. No external email software
required to send.

FxEmail will also function as a REXX exit in PMMail 1,92 (and probably other
email packages) to decode the fax file and automatically receive it into your
Fax log just as if it had been received by conventional means.

FxEmail is written in Object REXX so Warp 4 is required.

It is currently in Hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming
Will eventually be in pub/os2/applications/internet/mail

----------------------------------------------------------------
IBM Ships Developer Tools for Building Java Enterprise Solutions

VisualAge for Java and VisualAge WebRunner Speed Development of
High-Performance Applications that Integrate the Web with I/T

SOMERS, N.Y., July 8, 1997 ... Powerful productivity tools for Java**
developers, designed to fully integrate enterprise data with new Web
applications for e-business, are now generally available from IBM. With over
250,000 betas distributed to developers, VisualAge for Java* now debuts as
the industry's first fully integrated development environment for writing,
compiling and testing 100% Pure Java applets, JavaBeans** or applications
for the enterprise.

VisualAge WebRunner*, also available today, is a complementary toolkit of
Java productivity aids offered through a one-year, renewable subscription
service. Each subscription entitles Java developers to receive, throughout
the year, updates of wizards, frameworks, utilities, and other cool
WebRunner technologies to simplify and speed the development of Web
applications.

IBM also announced the preview of Bean Extender, VisualAge WebRunner's
next-generation "bean dipping" technology, through IBM alphaWorks. Bean
dipping technology will enable developers to customize existing JavaBeans by
adding functions such as security, licensing and systems management, without
reprogramming or recompiling code.

VisualAge for Java VisualAge for Java's integrated development environment
of browsers, editors, class libraries and debugging facilities offers an
end-to-end solution for creating "write once, run anywhere" enterprise
applications that are 100% Pure Java. The tool incorporates the VisualAge
family's award-winning visual construction-from-parts technology.

The Professional Edition provides a rapid application development
environment, enabling users to change and incrementally compile application
code quickly an easily throughout the entire development cycle. It also
offers robust version control facilities that help to manage each step of
development.

An Enterprise Edition of VisualAge for Java, to be generally available in
August, will be the industry's first enterprise-aware Java development
environment. It will include Enterprise Access Builders, which will enable
Java clients to connect to existing relational databases such as DB2*,
Oracle and Sybase, transactions and application servers. Resulting Java
programs will automatically connect an enterprise application to the Web, or
a Java client to an enterprise server. A Team Programming Server component
will be automatically shipped to registered licensees of VisualAge for Java
Enterprise late in 1997.

VisualAge WebRunner
The VisualAge WebRunner Toolkit, developed by Taligent, a wholly-owned
subsidiary of IBM, is jam packed with aids to boost the development of
client/server applications for the Web. The subscription-based toolkit
provides programmers with a continuous stream of innovative Java technologies
which complement IBM's VisualAge for Java development environment, as well as
non-IBM Java development tools.

Each toolkit includes:

o WebRunner Bean Wizard -- allows non-experienced programmers to build 100%
pure JavaBeans in as little as 90 seconds;

o Migration Assistant Tool for ActiveX** to JavaBeans -- converts ActiveX or
OCX controls to skeletal JavaBeans, cutting the conversion time dramatically
and allowing developers to move from desktop technology to e-business. The
Assistant Tool will also be distributed by JavaSoft.

o Server Works for Java -- Java frameworks that provide a consistent
Application Programming Interface (API) across a variety of Web servers and
hosts.

o Set of JavaBeans for quick assembly of applications, such as Network Beans
for easy access to the Internet, mail and news.

Additional information about VisualAge for Java may be found at
http://www.software.ibm.com/ad/vajava/. To obtain more information on the
VisualAge WebRunner Toolkit, please visit the Taligent home page at
http://www.taligent.com. IBM alphaWorks technology can be previewed at:

application development tools may be found at http://www.software.ibm.com/ad/.

Netscape Security Bug Fixed in OS/2 Version

The security bug fix for the Netscape Browser for OS/2 is now available in a
refreshed release of version 2.02. The bug, uncovered in mid-June, allowed a
web server using forms and JavaScript to obtain a local file from a client's
machine without the user knowing it. The correction prevents access to
client files.

The refreshed OS/2 browser, available at:
http://www.internet.ibm.com/browsers/netscape/warp, will include fixes to
nearly all the bugs reported in the Netscape for OS/2 newsgroup. The latest
code revision also eliminates the limit of only four browsers being open at
one time.

Press Points

The Australian - OS/2 Flies Client/Server's Coop with Bluebird by Kerrie
Murphy This July 1 article from Australia describes Bluebird technology as
helping companies make the transition from client/server environments. IBM
Australia spokesman Dennis Harrison said, "What we really want to do with
this is pull complexity away from the end user and put it back into the
hands of the IT professional, who can handle it. "

Java World - The Elephant is Dancing Nicely with Java by Barry Bowen This
article that included the subtitle, "A nimble, responsive IBM does Java with
style and speed." points out that IBM, which usually does not adopt
computing technology that it does not control, has reversed that trend by
making Java a core strategic element of its portfolio. The article in a
quote by analyst and write Amy Wohl mentions OS/2, along with network
computers, as a contributing factor to IBM's Java-readiness.

Newsbytes - IBM Intros JDK 1.1, Mobile Remote Access Server for OS/2 Warp by
Jacqueline Emigh This basic coverage of two recent OS/2 announcements
includes some comments by Sheryl Winton, IBM Java program manager, on the
"two distinct enhancements to OS/2 Warp, the Java Developers Kit (JDK) 1.1
and a mobile user-enabled edition of Remote Access Server." Ms. Winton
explains one benefit of the remote access feature as bringing first-time
access through dial-in connections to OS/2 Warp Server clients such as
Windows NT, Windows 95 and IBM 8235.

The article also indicated that analysts see a strong synergy between the
two OS/2 announcements and IBM's interest in network computing. "It seems
that IBM is trying very hard to support network computing, whether from net
computers or Java-based applications running on the Web," maintained Dan
Kusnetsky, an analyst at International Data Corp. (IDC).

Dow Jones - IBM Unveils Beta Copy of Java Development Kit for OS/2 Warp also
covered the recent announcement.

C/NET - IBM says "uncle" to Window,s June 20, 1997 For NEWS.COM Editor Jai
Singh, the high point of PC Expo was his "brutally frank" talk with IBM OS/2
honcho Mike Lawrie, who freely admits that Windows is dominant on the
desktop -- and yet contends that the OS/2 strategy has never been stronger.

The article explains that Lawrie has reintegrated the PSP division with the
rest of connecting to IBM's networking strategy. "It's not about OS/2, it's
about IBM," he said.

Mr. Singh comes to the conclusion that IBM and Lawrie are succeeding with
this plan. He wrote, "The strategy now calls for IBM to help its customers
leverage and expand their OS/2 investment. And what better way to do it than
to latch on to the Java juggernaut."

Computer Reseller News - IBM Pins Cautious Hopes On Updated OS/2, By Edward
F. Moltzen This CRN article is also based on an interview with Mike Lawrie.
The article explains that IBM specifically, the Austin, Texas-based Personal
Software Products business is working to make OS/2 Warp exploit Java's
growing importance as well as the trend toward "easier-to-manage" computing.
It also includes an anecdote about how IBM CEO Lou Gerstner and a top PSP
executive assured the CEO, of a company that had just finished a $500
million project based on OS/2, that IBM "would not put OS/2 into mothballs."

The article included assurances about the future of OS/2 based on comments
by Lawrie and other executives.

*IBM still is on schedule to ship its next major release of OS/2 in 1998

*A beta version of Bluebird, IBM's OS/2-based operating system that will be
closely tied to the Net PC, could be available later this year.

*IBM will look to enhance OS/2's file system, add encryption technology and
improve the OS/2 kernel.

Shareware Industry Association Awards OS/2 App, PM VIEW

The Shareware Industry Association recently held its 1997 awards ceremony.
PM View, an OS/2 application, won for the Graphics/Multimedia category over
a Mac application, another OS/2 application, and two Windows applications --
including Paint Shop Pro. Many OS/2 applications, such as a Fontfolder in
the Utility category, were honored with nominations in a wide range of
categories.

DYNDNS/2 3.2 is officially released as of today (7-9-97)!!!

Get it at:
http://Sektortech.DYNDNS.com
or
http://Sektortech.DYN.ML.ORG

DYNDNS/2 is the official OS/2 Client for DYNDNS.com and ML.ORG's dynamic
naming services. DYNDNS/2 3.2 has 3 new features:

1. RETRY (RETRY connection to dyndns.com or ml.org a set under of times if
connection fails.)
2. Menu Option (A little menu system that enables the user to skip loop and
more. Not much of a menu system but is helpful.)
3. Bells (Bells is an feature that enables the user to enable or disable the
warning bells.)

You may still be wondering what "Dynamic naming" services are. Well, in nut
shell, they basically give you the power to have a STATIC DNS name (not IP)
assigned to your dynamic IP. Services are generally cheap (from Free to 25
bucks/yr). And if you have the ability to be connected to the internet for
long periods of time and always wanted to run your own WWW,Mail,FTP,Gopher, etc
server. Or just have a static DNS name so it's easy top play games over the
net with your friends. DYNDNS/2 is the OS/2 client you need! Check out
www.dyndns.com and/or www.ml.org for more information on dynamic naming
services.

DYNDNS/2 is a very powerful text based client that will soon become GUI based.
DYNDNS/2 4.0/5.0 production has been restarted and more new features have been
added to the feature list. DYNDNS/2 4.0 (Freeware) will be released with a ton
of other Freeware Shareware and commercial software in a few months. So Keep
you eye on http://Sektortech.dyndns.com for future applications on the drawing
board.

The final (v.19) Beta of the Enhanced E's is online. This version is a
cleanup in preparation for final release.

The shareware Enhanced E Editor is a 32 bit, multithreaded OS/2 PM text
editor that builds on the functionality of the freeware editor included
in the same package. Productivity is the #1 priority of the Enhanced E.
Everything is at your fingertips with a few bonuses thrown in, for
example;

Save or print 'selected' text, save or append 'selected' text to a
temporary file, printer setups, time-date-name-signature file insert,
spawn new session, extensive drag and drop (open files or rearrange
text), popup menus, undo, toolbar, configurable autoSave, large (user
limited) file history, find by keyword or line #, multiple language
support, presentation mode, plug-in seamless HTML code stripping, line &
character number, bubble help, built-in code template tool, import...

Naturally you get the functionality that OS/2 users expect and many
others don't know exist.

File Hound for OS/2, 0.2a Beta is now available. For those of you who have
not heard of it, File Hound is a document indexing and retrieval system
capable of rapidly searching hundreds or thousands of documents using various
search criteria. Unlike the "Seek and Scan" and "Find" applets included with
the operating system, File Hound builds an index of significant terms in
documents, allowing it to scan thousands of documents within a couple seconds.

This version includes a number of fixes, as well as some features requested by
users. These include:

- You may now save the window positions and sizes so that they are displayed
where you want them on your Desktop.

- The internal text viewer may be replaced by an external viewer/editor (such
as HyperView PM).

- WordPerfect filter support (5.x-6.0). Other supported document types are
Ami Pro, HTML, Microsoft Word prior to 6.0, and ASCII text. Even if your
word processor is not included in this list, File Hound should be able to
extract text if it is stored as ASCII. For instance, Microsoft Word does
this, while Lotus WordPro is binary and therefore not readable.

Bugs fixed:

- Index View could not read FAT drives
- indexing hash bug, which increased number of false hits
- proximity search did not work
- index reporting from remote server did not work
- program sometimes crashed while handling Zip archives
- program sometimes crashed while displaying Word 6.0 docs

For more information and updates, check out the File Hound web site:
http://www.spacestar.net/users/gaalswyk

You can download the current version at
- http://www.spacestar.net/users/gaalswyk/download.html
- ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/apps/misc/flho002a.zip

The software has also been uploaded to ftp://ftp.cdrom.com,
and is expected to be in /pub/os2/editors/flho002a.zip.

ACCESS TO SCSI BUS FROM YOUR APPLICATION WITH ASPI ROUTER
=========================================================

Second release: Version 1.01
----------------------------

'Abort SRB' function now implemented.

ASPI Router is a device driver I wrote for all who want to use SCSI devices
from their application but shy away from writing their own driver.

ASPI Router is a simple driver that forwards ASPI request packets from your
application to OS/2's ASPI driver and thus allows you to use your SCSI devices
without writing an own driver. Additionally I wrote a small C++ library that
shows how to use the driver.

ASPI Router will be available on ftp.leo.org in the directory
/pub/comp/os/os2/leo/drivers/misc. The file name is aspir101.zip.

Enjoy!

The Network Time Protocol (NTP) Client V1.03 is available now!

What this software does
-----------------------
The Network Time Protocol (NTP) Client connects to a time server through the
Internet, gets the current time and adjusts the clock of your OS/2 machine
using the system DATE function.

Version 1.03 supports both TIME and DAYTIME servers!

What you need
-------------
You need Warp V3 or Warp V4 with TCP/IP or the IBM Internet Access Kit
(IAK) installed to run this software.

Where can I install this NTP client
-----------------------------------
You can install this client on any OS/2 system which has access to the
Internet. If you are behind a SOCKS firewall, you can enable the general SOCKS
gateway of Warp 4 since this NTP client doesn't offer the usage of a SOCKS
gateway.

Most users install this NTP client on an OS/2 system running a LAN- Server.
All those clients (LAN-Requesters) adjust their time using the following
LAN-Requester command:

NET TIME \\SERVER01 /SET /YES
where 'SERVER01' is the name of your LAN-Server.

The TCP/IP Portscanner V1.40 is available now!

What this software does
-----------------------
This software scans well known TCP/IP ports of one or more servers for active
services. You can specify a single server name (e.g. www.myserver.com) or a
range of IP-Addresses (e.g. from 192.85.184.12 to 192.85.184.66). Active port
numbers are being listed with the name of the service commonly used on this
port. You can also take in inventory of your IP addresses using the new PING
function for an entire range of IP-addresses

What you need
-------------
You need Warp V3 or Warp V4 with TCP/IP or the IBM Internet Access Kit
(IAK) installed to run this software.

Scanned ports - Recognized services
-----------------------------------
The TCP/IP Portscanner scans all ports
listed in the SERVICES file stored in the ETC directory of your local
workstation. While Warp V4 has a usable SERVICES file, Warp V3 still has a
very old version without important services like HTTP (WWW) or POP. Thus, Warp
V3 users MUST update their SERVICES file with a newer version from a Warp V4
machine or downloaded one from the Technical Support Page at
http://www.dataline.ch/~rch/portscan

If you try to scan a server which is not powered on, the TCP/IP portscanner
stops scanning after 15 seconds.

Missed services
---------------
It is not necessary to run a server using the default port; it is also
possible to have a server using different port numbers. This is usually done
when running more than one server (of the same type) on the same machine (such
as two HTTP- Servers on the same system). One of those two servers must switch
from the default HTTP-Port 80 to a different number (let's say to 1234). Users
can still access this server using an URL such as
"http://www.myserver.com:1234". Since 1234 is not a standard port number, it
is not listed in the SERVICES file and will not be detected. Even if you
manually add port 1234 to the SERVICES file, we still can't detect the type of
server. This could be a HTTP-Server (moved from port 80), a NNTP-Server (moved
from port 119) or even a Time-Server (moved from port 37).

Purpose
-------
This is not a hacker tool! It is unfriendly (and maybe even unlawful) to scan
other people's servers. This software tries to CONNECT to the target server
using various TCP/IP port numbers. Be aware that your IP-Address is being
logged on the target system. The purpose of this software is to scan your OWN
systems to have an overview on what servers are running and therefore need
surveillance or additional protection. This is very important if you aren't
behind a firewall: One single (commonly unknown) TELNET- or REXEC-Server could
grant access to your entire network, including services such as NETBIOS, using
the authority of the workstation user the server is running on.

The POP3Spy V1.1 is available now!

What this software does
-----------------------
- Are you tired of checking your E-Mail every few minutes ?
- You do not want to have your E-Mail Client running all the time to keep you
informed about incoming mail ?

POP3 Spy is a small program which checks your mail every few minutes and
informs you in many different ways:
- The window interior displays the number of messages on your mail- server.
The window is red if you don't have messages on your server and it turns to
green as soon as there is at least one message on your server. It is not
necessary to see the entire window; if you can see a small part of it, you
see if there is some mail waiting. - The icon changes. When running this
program minimized, you can check the icon on your desktop.
- The window title also tells you how many messages are waiting.
See if you have unread E-Mail using the task list!
- The software can inform you by playing a tune using the system speaker.
- It can even automatically launch your E-Mail client

What you need
-------------
You need Warp V3 or Warp V4 with TCP/IP or the IBM Internet Access Kit
(IAK) installed to run this software.

I've received several inquiries regarding press articles which appeared as a
result of comments made by IBM's Bill Etherington at a recent conference in
Monaco. A German wire service reported Mr. Etherington's comments, and the
wire service story was picked up (and then often misinterpreted) by other
press reporters.

Mr. Etherington, while acknowledging that Windows 95 has enjoyed success in
the consumer marketplace, did NOT indicate that IBM would withdraw OS/2 Warp
from consumer sales or otherwise, as some press stories have reported.

He did say:

"IBM is firmly committed to OS/2 Warp as the most reliable, scalable
desktop operating system for enterprise and professional users."

He also said:

"We are continuing to invest heavily in OS/2 Warp to extend its
capabilities to the Internet and Intranets as an example of the
implementation of our network computing strategy."

Indeed, most press articles quoted Mr. Etherington accurately, but many drew
the erroneous conclusion (not supported by Mr. Etherington's comments, and not
contained between quotation marks) that IBM plans to withdraw OS/2 Warp in
some fashion.

In short, IBM is primarily focused on marketing OS/2 Warp to business and
enterprise users. (The same statement would apply to virtually all of IBM's
product line.) Most development will be focused on continuing to strengthen
OS/2 Warp's network computing features, including Java, TCP/IP, Lotus Domino,
Netscape Communicator, etc., because OS/2 Warp users are telling us to expend
most (not all!) of our efforts in these areas. We want OS/2 Warp users to be
full (if not best) participants in the world of network computing. However,
"primarily focused" does NOT mean exclusively focused, and IBM has no plans
whatsoever to withdraw OS/2 Warp as a shrinkwrap product (available in
quantity one).

IBM is working with the wire service and hopes they will issue a clarification
to their subscribers.

IBM's electronic newsletter, "OS/2 Warp FM," Flash No. 30, includes further
information on IBM's statements to the press regarding OS/2 Warp and network
computing. For more information on OS/2 Warp, please visit the OS/2 Warp home
page at http://www.software.ibm.com/os/warp.

IBM has just released the entry version of their new Visual Age for JAVA
package. VA for Java has been receiving rave reviews from the most popular PC
magazines, see July issue of Byte magazine.

The best news however, is that released the Entry version for OS/2 for FREE
from their web-site:

http://www.software.ibm.com/ad/vajava

This is a excellent product, but you will need a good computer to use it
(although the code produced does not). I would recommend at least a P166 and
64MB RAM, even though these are above IBM recommendations.

Even though the IDE is not typical IBM, it is colorful and a joy to work with,
it is typical IBM that they have not announced it's availability yet.

The following information is for the OS/2 users of the world. The BBS is not
a OS/2 only bbs and it is not a all business bbs. It was designed with the
idea of both fun and to have the ability to retrieve shareware. The system
offers two separate OS/2 Message base conferences, one local and the other
is a world wide echo conference found on the U'NI-net Echo Mail Network. The
system carries all available U'NI-net conferences

Harvey's Home of The Lazy DOG! Bulletin Board would like to offer the bbs to
the OS/2 community to both allow the fine shareware products of OS/2 to be
downloaded/uploaded and to hopefully have the bbs appeal to those who use
OS/2 to have a active part in creating the message base for OS/2

Not to mention maybe have a little fun at the same time.

PS: I've received a reply that yes, AWE64 drivers for OS/2 will be released,
so you might alter my submission to reflect that. They didn't specify a date,
just that the drivers were in internal developement/testing.

THE REAL STORY BEHIND INTEL'S FIRE SALE ON CHIPS

http://www.anchordesk.com/story/story_1089.html

In a few weeks, the world's largest supplier of microprocessors
will cut prices 10 to 50%. Intel, which has cleverly
manipulated the chip market for years, is the master
of the artificially-inflated price. But it messed
up the launch of its MMX chip and had to lower prices.
Which means you win big. For a short time. Until
Intel recovers enough to start screwing you again.

In the last issue of Moz, the editor wrote a lengthy article on
"Building an Internet Home Page". At the conclusion, he stated:

"Finally the files were loaded on a diskette and sent to the ISP. Whilst my
ISP has facilty for uploading to his server, it was found easier to mail a
disk. As it was 67 files (632kb) mailing a disk was easier than uploading
one by one."

*MAILING* a disk ? Come on, I would have FAXED it.......
