Subject: OS/2 news, views and PRs 25.2.97

Thanks to all who came and said 'hello' to us at Sutherland ComputerMarket
last Sunday. (But I was amazed at a number of computer users who came up and
simply told they have never ever heard of OS/2 (- some even asked if it's an
add-on for DOS)

Because of ongoing problems with IBM GN, we'll use OzEmail to send this
newsletter.

The "Soyring notes" similar to what we had last issue caused quite a flurry
of activity when posted on the Canopus Compu$erve Forum.

//BTW - I tried to download today - so far cannot get to the site, I'll
try again later -but have seen very good comments from other users //
from David Nedrow:

A native OS/2 Bamba streaming audio/video plugin for Netscape for
OS/2 is now available at AlphaWorks (http://www.alphaWorks.ibm.com/Bamba)
with the nice little blurb "due to overwhelming demand from the OS/2
community" attached. And who says asking nicely doesn't work?

Now, everyone needs to start putting the pressure on for a native PanoramIX.

Bamba blurb follows:

Summary:

Bamba is a technology of streaming audio and video players from IBM Research
that allows you to play audio and video over the Internet. The plug-in is
designed to provide high quality audio and high frame-rate video over the
low-bandwidth and dial-up connections typical on the Internet today (14.4
and 28.8 Kbits/sec). A 6 Kbits/sec link is required to support our encoding
of the audio connection stream, and the rate of the video stream varies. The
Bamba package contains three players: Bamba Audio, Bamba Live Audio and
Bamba Video.

The Bamba Audio player is used to play back stored clips out on the Web. It
was first used for the PGA Golf Masters in April and then for Wimbledon and
the Olympics.

The Bamba Live Audio application allows users to connect to broadcast sites
and listen to live audio transmissions across the web.

The Bamba Video player allows you to playback stored video clips at various
bit rates ranging from 10-300 kbps.

The new *iba format supports audio, video, or combined audio/video clips.
Multiple clips can be embedded on the same HTML page for simultaneous
streaming. New *iba embed tags can optionally carry a range of settable
parameters including clip frame size, magnification specifications (whether
or not the clip can be increased to two times its size) type (audio, video,
etc) and play status (whether or not the clip can be interrupted).

Any clip can be set to autostart. Clicking play on a clip that is not
currently playing will start that clip and interrupt all other interruptable
clips. Clips with audio can be interrrupted and have the ability to
interrupt. When embed tags are not used or do not give a proper description
of the clip, clip-related information is determined from the clip header.
Control of clips with video can be customized to either use Click Controls
or the Control Bar. The Click Controls enrich the HTML author's ability to
customize the look and feel of a page.

Harvey just posted me this comment from Esther:

For what it's worth, the Phoenix OS/2 Society is growing. Plus it just
sent out 10,000 copies of its magazines (to a subset of former OS/2
Magazine subscribers); at our _worst_ estimates we expect to double the
size of the user group in the next two months.

Visit www.possi.org and find out what we're up to.

FontFolder is the native OS/2 Font Manager that allows you to easily use
large collections of Type 1 or TrueType fonts in OS/2 without bogging down
the system or generating hopelessly long font selection lists in
applications. You can have rapid access to hundreds or even thousands of
fonts while keeping only a small number actually installed in OS/2 at any
time. Browse and print fonts without having to install them, use fonts
directly from CDROMs, create fontpacks that install whole collections of
fonts as a unit, and more. OS/2 Magazine (June, 1996) said, "I found
FontFolder to be a very stable product that performed every font management
function that I could possibly use".

NEW IN VERSION 3.0:

TRUETYPE SUPPORT
DRAG AND DROP SUPPORT
FONT SPECIFICATIONS WINDOW

FontFolder Version 3.0 can be downloaded from the following sources:
- BMT Micro at
http://www.bmtmicro.com
ftp://ftp.bmtmicro.com/bmtmicro/fntf30.zip
- ftp://ftp-os2.nmsu.edu/os2/wpsutil/fntf30.zip
- ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/os2/wpsutil/fntf30.zip
- ftp://ftp.leo.org/pub/comp/os/os2/pmtools/fntf30.zip
- Compuserve: FNT30.ZIP in library 1 in the OS2BVEN forum.

FontFolder is shareware from PVsoft, we can provide registered copies.
And, ver. 3 is a free upgrade for current registred users.

If you are having problems with Netsacape plugins not working, see what
Martin said:

The problems you had however is probably due to not specifying the full path
for netscape.exe. We have a bug, if you specify just netscape.exe we cannot
find plugins, if you specify the full path, i.e. c:\netscape\netscape.exe
they should work.

Proposals for Future of the Warp Pharmacy
(cough, cough)

Reply-to: jon@zeta.org.au
---------------------------------------------------------------------
WANTED: Proposals for the Future of the Warp Pharmacy.

A rather sad anniversary of sorts is approaching - 1 year since the Warp
Pharmacy was last updated (sob, sob, boo, hiss)! It is time, way past time,
to find it a new home. For this reason, I am calling for expressions of
interest from people or groups who would like to inherit the task of
maintaining it.

If you have a proposal that you would like me to consider, please send me an
e-mail. I'd like to know answers to some or all of the following questions.
The questions are not intended to suggest particular answers.

o how much time you would be prepared to invest per week or month
to maintain it?

o what kind of bandwidth does your web server support ?

o would you charge for the service or use it to earn advertising
revenue ?

o would you require use of the term "Warp Pharmacy" and the existing
HTML source ? Would such use have to be exclusive?

o would you support mirroring to other sites ?

o would you be prepared to add an online editing, indexing and review
interface (either CGI, Java or Domino based) ?

o would you have any plans that make your proposal particularly
"interesting" (technologically speaking)?

To all the people who have contributed to the Warp Pharmacy in the past and
to the many, many people who have found it useful - thanks for your support
and sorry for not updating it in the last year.

Internet Gate 1.00 for OS/2 (proxy gate, firewall)
Reply-to: macca@arci01.bo.cnr.it (Marco Maccaferri)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Internet Gate 1.00 for OS/2 is available!

Internet Gate is a multiple proxy gate and firewall. If set up correctly, it
can allow users on a Local Area Network (LAN) without Internet access to
access the Internet through a single machine on the LAN connected to the
Internet, either via a dial-up modem / ISDN connection or another ethernet
card.

Internet Gate will allow you to use the following:
Email
World Wide Web
FTP
News
Telnet

IGATE can save you money by removing the need to get a separate dial-up
account, with phone line and modem for each user that wants access to the
Internet. Now they can all use the one link, at the same time.

The free shareware version is available from:

http://www.execpc.com/~marco/
