Modular Dreams releases WebAK.
//see our special offer for free CW plug-in)

MD+F WebAK First SX based program, MD+F WebAK, is released for IBM OS/2
Warp. Modular Dream Incorporated's Web Animation Kit eases creation of web
animations (up to thousands of frames), Imagemaps, patterns and
backgrounds. Visit the WebAK page for full description, pictures, and more.

Erm... You want a GIF animation with a thousand frames?

GIF Animator
Use the GIF Animator to load, create, test, or save GIF animations.
The GIF Animator provides the ability to load and take apart GIF
animations, construct them by simple drag-and-drop, test
animations by playing them (even supporting the Restore Previous
method yet supported by Netscape), or save them using a highly
optimized algorithm for the smallest file size possible. And unlike
most other applications, WebAK is also designed to create and
work with GIF Animations containing hundreds of frames.

See the GIF Animator displaying a GIF, a before and after view of
an optimized animation, and a high-frame animation.

Pattern Generator
WebAK's Pattern Generator lets you create seamless patterns for
use as backgrounds or for inclusion in your animations. With
additional tools such as an Image Holder to store your patterns, a
variety of filters for touching-up, and an Image Tile tester, creating
backgrounds for web pages has never been any easier.

See the Pattern Generator and an image holder holding a sampling
of various patterns.

Imagemap Writer
WebAK's Imagemap Writer lets you highlight areas on an image,
specify links, and creates Server-side or Client-side imagemaps for
you, with or with-out HTML test code. Once you use this tool, you
will never want to hand-code Imagemaps again.

See an image being mapped and a generated map file.

Filters and Effects
WebAK provides a small collection of image processing filters and
some special purpose effect dialogs to make it easier to create very
large animations.

See a list of the provided effects.

C++ style Script
WebAK's easy to use scripting language simplifies the tasks needed
for more complex animations, even for the most casual computer
users. For more advanced users, the scripting language (actually a
C++ style interpreter) provides more features such as the ability to
create or destroy objects, variables, test conditions, and looping
constructs.

See a complex high-frame animation and the code used to create it.

Collapse and Resurrect
By using WebAK's unique Collapse and Resurrect feature, you can
store not only the end result of your work, such as a GIF
animation, but also the steps that went into it, for example the GIF
Animator window and its settings, the various effect dialogs which
you have open and even any links you created by
drag-and-dropping between objects. If you create something neat,
don't just tell others how to do it, give them your whole
environment. Everything, even images being displayed, will be
neatly stored in one file! Once you use the Collapse and Resurrect
feature provided by WebAK, you will wish all your other
programs did this.

See collapsed environments.

New Game for OS/2
Armin Schwarz 73322,2045

I have made available a new game for OS/2 - Memory Game for OS/2 - a card
matching game with 32 beautiful, 300dpi, 256 color pictures of dinosaurs.
It is a fully functional program and was written for kids, but adults may
play it as well (my 4-year-old is holding the record at 68 tries in our
household). A registered version is available also and you get four
additional picture themes and options like auto-play, hints and score
keeping. This game has been specially designed for voice navigation - find
matching cards by saying the numbers 1-32. Show this game to your family
and friends and it will be the talk of the day at work or school - not many
are playing games with voice commands! This game works under Warp 3.0 and
later.

Visit my homepage at: http://ourworld/compuserve.com/homepages/aschw and
download the game now. I have uploaded it to OS2USER, OSAVEN and Hobbes as
well and should be available soon.

Enjoy,

Armin Schwarz

Great! I'm so glad to see voice stuff coming out for OS/2 today. If I may
quote his Gatesness, May 1997, from PC Week Online,

"... a decade from now, ... we'll
talk to our computers instead of
being dependent on keyboards and
mice. And, instead of searching
Internet databases with clumsy key
word searches, we'll simply ask them
questions the way we would another person."

Xact v5.0 Demo
Martin R. Hadam 100657,3603

Xact is a scientific graphing program on OS/2 from Germany now available at
version 5.0. It is both excellent at number crunching as well as fast
vector graphics. If you are currently using SigmaPlot, PlotIT or Origin -
give it a try (you may never want to go back). You can also use it for
general illustration purposes on its own; like preparing slides, overheads
or even posters up to DINA0. It may completely replace PowerPoint (if that
is what you are using now).

It's *fast* and very *easy* to use. Most functions are accessible from
truly context sensitive menus and "pipettes" can be used to transfer line
or fill styles, fonts or axes from one graph to another.

It also features a powerful REXX and C interface (which covers most Xact
functions); which can even be used for the creation of truly interactive
graphics. For a programmer, using Xact as a graphical front end for
database output seems quite neat. Please note that the docs for programmers
are in English only.

To get some more ideas you might want to read my review [this is the
shameless sales pitch part ] about version 5.0 in the recent OS/2
e-zine at http://www.os2ezine.com/v2n5/xact.htm

Please note that the current version is in German only. An English version
is definitely in the works and due for release later this year. The demo is
available on OS2UGER (lib #7) as XACT50.ZIP (2.6MB) as well as via ftp from
Hobbes. The otherwise fully functional demo has the following restrictions:
(1) it will cease to work after June 30, 1997 and (2) during export and
printing, multiple copies of "Xact Demo" are inserted into the output. For
those interested, there are also students' versions (with proof) and 16-
and 32-bit Windows versions available.

OS/2 Essentials V2!
Brad Wardell 76710,240

Stardock Announces OS/2 Essentials Version 2
New Utility Suite comes with a lot of extras!

Canton MI - Stardock Systems, Inc., a leading OS/2 software vendor,
announced OS/2 Essentials Version 2 today. OS/2 Essentials has long been
Stardock's primary utility suite for OS/2. Where Object Desktop supplies
system and desktop enhancements, OS/2 Essentials provides additional
utilities that most users will find useful. Version 2 is the first major
update to the suite since version 1.1 was released in July of 1995. All the
OS/2 Essentials components have been updated, with the exception of the
Havoc arcade game and the FileBar window manager. These products have been
removed from the new edition and replaced with SDS Benchmark 1.0.

The utilities in OS/2 Essentials Version 2 now include:

FileGraph/PM. With FileGraph/PM, users can visually graph out where their
disk space is being used. This is very handy for users with large hard
drives, as well as IS Managers who need to see where the disk space on the
network is being utilized.

Screen Saver Professional. A powerful screen saver with security, green
monitor support, and multimedia features (optional). Screen Saver Pro also
bypasses the long standing Lockup (OS/2's built-in screen blanker) bug that
resets all thread priorities on the system (which can have a very negative
impact on system performance). Screen Saver Pro comes with dozens of
modules and supports both full screen DOS, Win-OS/2, and OS/2 sessions.

DirMaster Professional. Possibly the fastest and most powerful file
manager, DirMaster was inspired by the Amiga's Opus file manager. It has a
dual drive view (similar to Norton Commander) and is multithreaded for
exceptional performance. DirMaster Professional's highly configurable tool
bar can be customized to meet the needs of each user.

SDS Benchmark 1.0. Stardock saw the need for a standard OS/2 benchmarking
program that everyone could use as a reference point. Unlike other
available benchmarks, SDS Benchmark is very easy to use and quickly
provides results on system performance. Video, CPU, memory, and drive speed
are measured, rated, and reported to the user through an easy to understand
OS/2 Presentation Manager application.

WPS Trashcan Professional. OS/2's WorkPlace Shell (WPS) is a natural
environment for a true trashcan, which OS/2 Essentials now provides. WPS
Trashcan Pro not only lets users drag-and-drop objects to the trashcan, it
now integrates with the WPS's "Delete" command enabling seamless operation
with the desktop.

For this release of OS/2 Essentials, Stardock always planned to utilize CD
ROM distribution for maximum convenience. However, rather than let the
extra room on the CD go to waste, Stardock has added a compilation of OS/2
FixPaks, updates to JAVA and VisualAge, and a host of the top freeware,
demos, and unregistered shareware programs that are available for OS/2.

"A friend of mine felt that OS/2 Essentials 1.x was more like OS/2
nice-to-have's" said Brad Wardell, President of Stardock Systems. "For
Version 2, I wanted to make sure that OS/2 users viewed the OS/2 Essentials
CD as something very essential so we wanted to include not only the utility
suite but things that would be nice to have on a CD as opposed to hanging
around on your hard disk (like FixPaks) as well as not having to spend the
time downloading them."

Some of the extras that come with OS/2 Essentials Version 2 include:

FixPaks 1 for OS/2 Warp 4, FixPak 26 for OS/2 Warp 3, Java 1.02 for OS/2
Warp, Corel Office for JAVA (BETA), Ghostscript Postscript reader (with
viewer), XFree86 OS/2 3.2, Animated Pointers, DragText 2.0, NPSWPS 1.82,
Xit 2.4, Xfile 1.1, Injoy PPP dialer, MR/2 ICE Mailer, PMMail 1.92, HTML
Studio, additional "cool" desktop bitmaps, a mixer for Sound Blaster cards,
Bill Gates AVI ("OS/2 is the platform for the 90's"), OS/2 Boot Logo
Creation Utility, MPEG Layer III Audio Player for OS/2 (with sample music),
QuickMotion 1.1 demo (QuickTime player), TrueSpectra demo, BootOS/2,
CaffeineMark 2.5 JAVA Benchmark, Config.SYS info tool, GammaTech Utilities
3.0 DEMO, The Graham Utilities 2.0 DEMO, a driver to access HPFS drives
from DOS, LxLite (EXE/DLL compression), Memsize utility, Phoenix/2 undelete
utility, RAR for OS/2, Civilization for XFree86 OS/2(as well as a bunch of
additional Xfree ports), demos of Stardock programs(Object Desktop,
Galactic Civilizations, and Trials of Battle), as well as fixkits for
Stardock programs.

A complete listing can be found on Stardock's website at
http://www.stardock.com/oe20.html.

"One thing we wanted to address with OS/2 Essentials Version 2 is that OS/2
Warp 4's software sampler excluded shareware authors as well as many other
fine programs that are available. We wanted to see good OS/2 developers get
exposure to OS/2 users that they may not have had contact with before,"
said Wardell.

OS/2 Essentials Version 2 will be released on Friday, June 9th with a list
price of $US49.95. Current users of OS/2 Essentials 1.x can purchase the
upgrade version for $US19.95 (for a limited time).

//we will advise local availability shortly//

ObjectRexx Dev Edition
Martin R. Hadam 100657,3603

The German magazine c't reports in their latest issue (06/97 p64) that IBM
will release in June the first versions of their "ObjectRexx Developer
Edition" with debugger, tracer and IDE included.

However, it will only be available on NT.

It's a way by IBM to assist OS/2 customers with strong REXX backgrounds to
move over to NT (my interpretation)

Bluebird
Fm: Esther Schindler [Sysop] 72241,1417
To: Martin R. Hadam 100657,3603

Bluebird is Bluebird. It's more than MSHELL. OS/2 will still run DOS,
WinOS2, and OS/2 applications. The guy who did the demo (whose name I could
dig up... I don't know him) said categorically that *all* OS/2 applications
will run.

The WPS isn't collecting dust. Sorry, I can't say more at the present time.
But as Paul Giangarra pointed out at the Tech Interchange, a new OS/2
client *and* server will be out in 1998.

You can categorize my approach as appeasement, if you like. If you
don't see the results, perhaps it's because you aren't looking in the right
places. Or perhaps you're correct, and nothing I've done has had any useful
effect. I leave it to the lurkers to draw their own conclusions.

Frankly I haven't paid any attention to the ObjectREXX developer edition,
for Windows NT or anything else. My attention, lately, has been on Lotus
Go, which will be released on OS/2 simultaneously with all the other
platforms. Its major scripting language is NetREXX. IBM is putting a lot of
energy into NetREXX, which seems to be paying off. (For lurkers who are too
shy to ask: You write REXX. It emits Java.) If you're going to be appalled
at rotten behavior, put at least as much energy into cheering IBM when they
do the correct thing. Otherwise you're being entirely unfair to the people
who work hard to deliver.

XFile 1.1

X-FILE FOR OS/2 - 1.1 UPDATE

X-File, "The Open File Dialog Fixer", is a desktop enhancer which adds
major enhancements to the standard OS/2 microscopic "open/save as" file
dialog. Nothing paranormal here - just real useful stuff.

X-File runs under OS/2 3.0 or later, is small and non-intrusive, and will
save you from the merrily-we-scroll-along syndrome. Works with many apps
such as DeScribe, System Editor and SmallEd - see list below for more.
Another must-have X utility from the company that gave you X-it and Matrix.

WHAT'S NEW ========== - added DeScribe support - added file rename, delete,
shred, undelete and create dir to popup menu - added /Pnn command line
option to pause "nn" seconds before loading Xfile. Helps prevent startup
conflicts with certain apps (like Object Desktop 1.52) - added /W option to
prevent display of warning messages. - smaller exe and dll - fix for
registration and options (freq dir list) disappearing - fix for incorrect
open dialog width (right side truncated) when switching to higher screen
resolution - fix for xfile config dialog not appearing when selected from
task list(s) - fix for font too large on drive buttons at 1024x768 or
higher res - fix for Embellish sys3175 err on load. - fix for RPF Zip
Control (unzip -> select directory dialog) - fix for xfile icon not
appearing in object desktop/taskbar window lists.

LIST OF FEATURES ================ - Replaces the tiny "open/save as" file
dialog with a full height dialog that is user customizable - prevents
Carpal Scroll Syndrome by showing more files and directories. - Drive
buttons at the top of every "open/save as" file dialog. Single click moves
you to that drive. - History buttons for last files and directories
accessed. - A Frequent Directories button (quicklist) - jump to your
favorite directory in two mouse clicks! - File Viewer button lets you view
the current selected file using either your favorite viewer, or the
default WPS viewer for that file object. - File Manager button lets you
access the current selected directory using either your favorite file
manager, or the default WPS file manager (folder is opened). - All of the
above functions/buttons are also accessible with a popup menu (right mouse
button or Shift-F10). - Change the fonts for the file and directory lists -
use a really small font to really cram in all those files/directories. -
Both the "Drives" and "Type of File" drop down lists are lengthened to fit
the entire list on the screen - no more scrolling here either!

This utility will enhance many existing applications, such as DeScribe, System Editor(E), Enhanced System Editor (EPM), SmallEd, Mesa/2, Home Page Publisher, PMMail, BackAgain/2, FM/2, HTML Studio, PhotoGraphics, Netscape/2, Program Commander/2, NeoN Grafix Lite, PMJpeg, Adobe Acrobat, PMuue, Iedit, Initor, PMMpeg, UNZip Shell, Compuserve Information Manager, Icon Editor, Icon Heaven, WebExplorer, Internet Adventurer, ZOC, GVPM, HexEdit/2, IniMaint, ISDN Watcher, ZIPme, Visual Age products, Borland development products, Compare, EquationEditor/2, PMpgp, RexxEdit, Maple V/2, BlueCad, Nota Musica, OS/2 Disk Catalog,LogoArt, PMSpy, Pastry Box, OS/2 Multimedia tools (Digital Audio, Video, etc), Page, PMDMatch, Matrix, Mahjongg and many more.

"X-File is a simple yet much needed utility that every OS/2 user needs to have in their arsenal of desktop enhancement utilities. And, certainly, it is well worth the price. A highly recommeded software!"
- OS/2 Computing, March 12, 1997 (www.os2computing.com/magazine/mar97/contents.htm)

"5 Hammers" (as in 5 stars)
- Gary Hammer, WebMaster of OS/2 Must-Have

"X-File RULES!!!!!! I can't imagine using OS/2 without it!"
- Alexander Newman

"You have created a small, simple and utterly indespensable addition to my OS/2
Warp desktop....well done! Thanks for supporting OS/2 with such great
shareware!"

2. E-mail faxes.
The best way of viewing them is to rename to *.tif. Then you can use
either: Quickling fax software, Imagining (which comes with Win95B) or you
can import it into Word (6 or 7). The best results are obtained using
Imagining (the best quality). In Word I have seen only page 1 out of 2.
There are other graphic programs able to read *.tif files.

JAVA! It may be the current buzzword of the IT industry. But make no
mistake about it - it is NOT just another passing fad. Java's philosophy
of 'write once, run anywhere'(*) will have a major impact how applications
are developed and then enabled for network computing, the Internet, and
for the self-service environment. Companies that align their technology
goals in Java's direction are beginning to see an expansion of their
business while maintaining, and even lowering, their overall cost of IT
ownership.

We will be privileged by the visit of David Gee and Simon Phipps. David is
the Program Manager for alphaWorks and head of IBM's Java Marketing Team.
Simon is the Program Manager for Java Technology at IBM's Hursley Lab.

How is Java helping companies succeed
How to get started with Java
What is IBM doing with Java and related technologies
