Interview with Mike Lawrie
Mike Lawrie, Director of IBM PSP, answers the question "OS/2 has a
history but no future". Can you speak to this? What is going to be in
the next version of OS/2?" for OS/2 Warp FM, IBM's online OS/2
magazine. Get the full story at

128 bit encryption?

IBM has possession of 128 bit netscape and is sitting on it (since december
I heard).

Write, phone, whatever to get them to release it.

The email that will get a canned reply is

dbandera@us.ibm.com -- Debbie Bandera

This is what she'll say:

As you probably know, there are government regulations that me must comply
with in order to allow downloads of this code. We are working on the
capability but I can't give you a firm date or commitment on when you'll be
able to download this product. I will add you to the list of people who
have requested this product.

Re FormCheck/2 v1.00beta

Hi folks..

If you need a CGI-program to handle forms, this may be a way to do it :)
FormCheck/2 is a small tool to check a form, translate it, place it into a
text-file and send it away as email or fax or whatever..

It's freeware and OS/2-executable only. It's beta, but I think it's
stable...

Want it ? login anonymous to FTP.STADTLEBEN.DE. The (maybe only) archive is
FRMCHK1B.EXE.

If you've got problems or ideas (!!) , feel free to mail me.

The fifth CSD for The Graham Utilities for OS/2, V2 has been made
available. These CSD's are cumulative, ie you only need to download
and keep the last one.

To retrieve and install this CSD you have a number of options
at your disposal. There are two methods of installation: manual and
automatic.

The manual method involves downloading the CSD zip file,
extracting it and then running the CSDInst.Exe program. The zip file
also has a CMD file in it to do this for you (UPDINST.CMD).

To retrive the file, you have a number of options and methods available
to you. They are FTP, Gopher or Telnet.

To use FTP, log on using the following details:

Host ftp.warpspeed.com.au
User ID Updates
Password Updates

Make sure that your transfer mode is set to BINARY and then GET the
appropriate file.

To Use Gopher, you can connect using one of two ports (70 or 77).
For example:

Gopher -p 70 -h updates.warpspeed.com.au

or

Gopher -p 77 -h updates.warpspeed.com.au

The telnet methods allows you to log onto the BBS. Enter:

Telnet bbs.warpspeed.com.au

The automatic method is to use the retrieve software updates program
provided by IBM. There are two different versions of the retrieve
software updates program. The first which was supplied with Warp 3
(not Warp 4), used a gopher server on port 77. If you are using Warp 3
then enter:

Update -h updates.warpspeed.com.au -t C:\GU20

(assuming that C:\GU20 was where you installed the utilities).

If you are using Warp 4, IBM did not supply the Update.Exe program,
instead they have created another program RSUInst.Exe (Remote Software
Updates). Using this method, you open a web page and select a RSU file
by clicking on it. This downloads a small .RSU file to your browser,
and if your web browser is correctly configured to recognise the MIME
type "application/rsu", passes it onto RSUInst.Exe which then logs via
FTP onto a specified server, downloads the file(s) and then runs any
specified installation program.

Further instructions and information on RSU (and links to the IBM page
to get it all) can be found on the WarpSpeed Computers Updates page
that can be accessed via the following URL:

http://www.warpspeed.com.au/updates.htm

(These pages also have FTP links as well).

Hello all,

I received the following message from the webmaster of www.32bit.com. I thought
it would be useful if I forwarded it to this newsgroup, so that all of you can
add your favorite software!

--snip--

We have had large number of messages like yours, so we are opening an OS/2
section next week! Will you help us out, so we can keep it alive? Just
see http://www.32bit.com/software/url_add.phtml to add any of your favorite
OS/2 software to the archive IMMEDIATELY. The OS/2 category buttons will
show up early next week, sooner if we get more submissions. Just be sure
to mention "OS/2" in the description.

BTW, we run on another good 32bit OS - FreeBSD. I'm not ready for that
section yet, but with time, I will be.

Thanks!

Thinking Operating Systems v2.04

By Tom Anderson, Jr.

Late again. Hey, it's the heat. Yes, that's it .

And to add to my lateness, my ISP has been so slow that I have not been able
to send or check mail. Yes, it is a national provider. So, how I'm looking
into the cable company for my cyberlife needs. Has anyone been lucky enough
to have this for a service? E-mail if you have.

Now on the short part of my commentary.

The 1997 Shareware Industry Awards have been announced at http://www.sic.org.
In each and every category there is an OS/2 application. This is truly great
news. There are twelve categories and in eleven there are two or more OS/2
applications.

And now for some important news. In all of the times each of us have read or
heard someone say to the effect that OS/2 is dead, now you can tell them about
Warpstock '97. This event is the out growth of the Marketplace meeting of
OS/2 vendors in Phoenix. From there the die was cast in St. Louis at the
IBM Technical Interchange. The Warpstock Steering Committee, announced in St.
Louis, that October 24-26, 1997 in Los Angeles, CA. would be the site of this
OS/2 "OS/2 love-fest." I'm quoting the next paragraph from
comp.os.os2.announce on 22 May 1997.

"The enthusiasm the OS/2 user community has shown for Warpstock is just
tremendous,' said Felix Cruz, sales and marketing director for Softouch
Systems. 'In the 1960's, young men and women associated Woodstock with the
cause of individual freedom of expression. The millions of computer users who
use OS/2 Warp as their operating system also made a choice; they looked for an
alternative better than the one suggested by the 'establishment.' Warpstock
permits an opportunity for OS/2 enthusiasts to express their 'freedom' from
the tyranny of the Microsoft hegemony,' Cruz added. With a twinkle in his
eye, he whispered, 'And it'll be a hell of a lot of fun!'"

Here's the URL for you to bookmark:
http://www.basin.com/os2/warpstock.html

So, in the spirit that we, the users, will be held responsible for the success
or failure of OS/2, let's support this in any fashion we can. From keeping
informed and passing this on to other OS/2 users to showing up in LA this
October.

And remember to register those shareware programs.

Take care,

Tom Anderson, Jr.

IBM Announces WebExec for IBM Software Servers

---------------------------------------------------------------------
IBM Software Solutions announces WebExec for IBM Software Servers

Research Triangle Park, NC, June 9, 1997 ... IBM Software Solutions today
announced the availability of the IBM Software Server WebExec, a Web-based tool
which provides customers with remote, integrated cross-server administrative
capability. With this announcement, IBM takes Web-based server administration
to a new dimension. The WebExec makes the management of IBM Software Servers
easier than ever by utilizing cross-platform Java technology.

WebExec provides an integrated approach to centralized, remote administration
of the IBM Software Servers. It allows network administrators to remotely
manage the Software Servers via the Internet--or the company intranet--using
any standard Web browser that supports HTML 3.0, JavaScript, and Java.
Organized as a set of modular functions, WebExec provides immediate benefits
with future expandability.

WebExec provides significantly easier management capability of the IBM Software
Servers. A simple consistent graphic interface provides a convenient,
at-a-glance status of each server and preserves the look and feel across
servers and platforms. WebExec permits systems administrators to execute basic
server administrative tasks such as start or stop the server, monitor server
status, view log and statistical information, and access individual server
Web-based capabilities.

WebExec can grow with business and systems needs. WebExec will accommodate the
integration of non-IBM software servers, and users can seamlessly add
Web-accessible applications to the administrative function set. Any
application that can be accessed via a Java-enabled browser can be added to the
WebExec function set.

WebExec will initially support the following Version 4 IBM Software Servers:

- DB2 Database Server for OS/2 and Windows NT
- Internet Connection Server for OS/2, AIX, and Windows NT
- Lotus Domino Server for Windows NT
- Transaction Server for OS/2 and Windows NT

All the IBM Software Servers on NT, OS/2 and AIX platforms will be supported
over time.

IBM Software Server customers can download WebExec today at no charge from
http://booksrv2.raleigh.ibm.com/eagle/. This site also provides a number of
support features for the WebExec product including: on-line forums for
feedback, comments, and service; a feedback survey; and extensive product
documentation.

This is an opportunity for all Software Specialists to provide valuable
information to their customers by bringing the no-charge WebExec product to
their attention.

For more information on the IBM Software Servers, please see

What is it?

CHKPART is an OS/2 text-mode program that will scan the hard disk partition
tables (the Master Boot Record, or MBR, and the Extended Boot Records, or
EBRs), looking for errors. It won't fix any errors, and does not write to
your hard disk. It just displays the results of the search. The output is
not meant for "casual" users, but if you are familiar with the structure of
the MBR/EBR, you should be able to use the output from CHKPART to fix the
error yourself.

HINT: If you save the output from CHKPART, the information in the report
