Subject: OS/2 news, views and PRs

Welcome to our mostly -but not allways- good OS/2 news.

The InJoy dialer sounds very tempting....
Meanwhile, I decided that maybe my ancient (actually, it's more than 3 years
old, so that's an antique...) notebook is *not* too underpowered for Merlin
//TP750C 486SL33 20MB 450MB//, so last week I installed W4 on it. Had a few
hiccups - possibly the 150MB boot partition was just too small for all those
options I selected......
But it's running quite happily - it's actually my first full-time Merlin PC.
After install finished, deleted UltiMail and PCOS2 (if you do so, remember
to de-register UltiMail first using .CMD provided), also deleted all
unwanted SCSI, etc drivers, keyboard files, etc - (though these doNOT buy
you much space).
After Netscape/2 install, my 150MB boot drive ended with 40MB free space,
less 20MB swap file, the only option not on C: was MMedia on D:
BUT, for anyone installing OS/2, I do suggest a lot bigger boot drive, *and*
more free space !!!

/// sorry for delays in delivering CarbonBased Zip/Crypt products - we
should have them Tuesday and ship out same day- sorry for any inconvience///

Version 1.00 of Animated Mouse Pointer for OS/2 (WPAMPTR) is now available.

"Animated Mouse Pointer for OS/2" is a FREEWARE WPS integrated SOM enhancement
class for the mouse object. With this program you can animate all of the OS/2
mouse pointers.

The following animation resource types are supported:
- OS/2 pointer files
- Win* cursor files
- Win* Animation files
- AniMouse resource DLL files
- animation set directories which can contain any of the above
within a certain name scheme.
(location on any partition supporting long file names like HPFS).

"Animated Mouse Pointer for OS/2" also includes a creation program for
AniMouse resource DLL files. More, "Animated Mouse Pointer for OS/2"
introduces the "Static Pointer" feature (even within AniMouse resource DLL
files).

"Animated Mouse Pointer for OS/2" replaces the Pointers page in the Mouse
object so you can configure all the animations simply by modifying the
settings of the Mouse object, as you are already used to do. Use the advanced
Drag&Drop functionality provided by "Animated Mouse Pointer for OS/2" to drag
all the supported resource files directly over the container or over one of
its items (mouse pointers) to simply change the animation for all or only for
one of the mouse pointers.

Further, Animated Mouse Pointer for OS/2 introduces some new Mouse object
settings strings so that you can setup all animation settings via the REXX API
call SysSetObjectData().

And you get that all for FREE.

You can download "Animated Mouse Pointer for OS/2" via FTP from
hobbes.nmsu.edu. Look for:

ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/incoming/amptr100.zip (currently)
or ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/os2/wpsutil/amptr100.zip (when properly
checked-in to archive)

Announce: InJoy for OS/2 - Version 1.0
**************************************

A quick note before anything else:

* Sorry for a slow announcement! InJoy has been out for a few weeks, but
not announced till now because of the following.

* After InJoy was released an INI file was discovered in the zip archive.
Please backup your old "in-joy.ini" before installing the new InJoy on
top of an existing copy.

* Those of you using SLIP should get an update from bj@fx.dk

The already successful InJoy PPP/SLIP dialer for OS/2 has now taken another
step forward with the version 1.0 release. The first non-beta release of InJoy
is available for download from:

* http://www.fx.dk

IP Masquerading, Dial On Demand, Phone lists, SLIP support, Minimum CONNECT
speed, and an awesome graphical ticker is there. Never has InJoy been extended
this much in between releasing.

My hat is off to all the loyal users who registered during the beta cycle.

THANKS to them InJoy is going to just keep getting better and better. And,I
hope those who looked at InJoy during the beta phase and decided not to
register will take another look now . . .

InJoy Feature List
******************

o Full 32 bit PPP connections (according to the latest RFC's)
o Full 32 bit compressed SLIP connections (according to the latest RFC's)
o Full terminal mode capability
o Dial on demand
o IP masquerading (share PPP connection simultaneously with work stations
on your LAN, including Mac's's, Win95, 3.1 and all other TCP/IP clients)
o Port speeds configurable to 345,600 (hardware and driver permitting)
o Disconnect actions. Exit at any of these events:
- Any disconnect
- Any unprovoked disconnect
- Idle TIMEOUT
- TIMER expire
- Dialing failure
o CHAP and PAP authentication fully supported
o Low CPU resource usage
o Easy configuration
o Connection info stored in CONNECT.TXT, and viewable while connected
o Easy auto learning of log on scripts
o Automatic grabbing of IP addresses when running SLIP. No need for REXX!
o Script pausing to allow changing password insertion. Perfect for
setup's with constantly changing passwords, e.g. SecureID.
o Auto Internet connect at program start
o Auto line drop if modem negotiates a connection at a speed lower
than the user configurable limit
o Auto re-connect if carrier drops unintentionally
o Auto start/stop programs (like mail, news and FTP clients).
o Programs to be auto started are user specified
o Auto re-dial upon failure to establish a connection
o Phone number list with up to 10 phone numbers. Dial sequence and which
numbers from the list that are to be dialed can be controlled via several
user selectable options.

o Timeout warnings (prior to line drop)
o Improving performance tuning options
o Graceful logoff (if host does not allow carrier drop)
o Possible to copy your host's definitions
o Tunes at connect/disconnect/timer warning/timeout warning
o NULL modem support
o Allows parity changing within scripts (great for CompuServe)
o PM Patrol (tm) aware
o Hiding password and userid from scripts using the [$PASSWORD]
and [$USERID] metavariables
o Configurable user confirmations
o Stable connections, even on RAM starved machines
o Textual "news ticker", showing you OS/2 commercials
and announcements (obsoleted by new graphical ticker).
o Automatic graphical "news ticker" messages from the InJoy Command

Center
- InJoy Headquarter News
- OS/2 News
- OS/2 Advertisements
- Win 95/NT News
- Win 95/NT Advertisements
- Internet General
- Job openings
- More to come every day!!!
o Releases COM port when not in use

InJoy is neither an extension to, nor a user interface for the PPP.EXE
included in the OS/2 Internet Access Kit. Following either of those paths
would have served only to provide slower performance and more resource usage.
Instead InJoy is a completely new PPP dialer that uses the IBM TCP/IP stack
for transport. This means that InJoy provides improved performance and
functionality with your existing Internet applications.

FUTURE PLANS
************

My goal for InJoy is for it to be the "standard" by which all other OS/2
Internet dialers are measured. I intend to achieve that goal through a
development program which will add these functions and features:

o PPP server
o SLIP server
o Presentation Manager version (GUI)
o Auto running modules at any event
o Wav-file support (sound)
o TCPOS2.INI file support (migrate your existing hosts)
o Periodic dialing
o Auto monitor POP servers and HTML pages on the net
o Automated downloading and installation of new InJoy versions
o Dedicated ISDN support via CAPI
o A few secret projects I just can't reveal yet . . .
o Your good idea might fit in here, e-mail me . . .

REVIEWS
*******

"It has so many features that it's unreal.
I did see an apparent average download speed increase on compressed
binaries of about 2-3%. All in all, very much worth it."
- Rob Hughes about InJoy 0.9
(www.SharewareJunkies.com/injoy.htm)

"Have you ever been frustrated by the IBM Dialer? Its onerous setup
and subsequent failures? Or by looking at numerous scripts to provide
the same functionality? Instead of fiddling with the Dialer, and
hacking at scripts that don't quite meet your needs, end your
frustration. In-Joy, is a dialer for PPP or SLIP connections that
provides an easy to use functionality and a robustness that is missing
from the above."
- Doug Glenn about InJoy v0.9 (www.musthave.com)

"I started searching for a dialer that would reconnect a dropped
connection automatically. At that time, there were two dialers in beta
testing that would reconnect automatically. Not wanting to waste
resources I chose InJoy because it was a text mode application."

OS/2 Warp on the 'Net, http://www.nfwa.com/os2/

With OS/2 Warp on the 'Net, we have attempted to link to all quality OS/2
resources on the Internet while maintaining a consistently organized site.
The features you would normally find in an index of this type are there, minus
the frivolous 38kb splash graphics and "Get brand X browser Now!" icons.

The site is:
* Quick loading.
* Consistently updated.
* HTML compliant (Wilbur validated).
* Designed to usability guidelines of the W3C, IBM and NCAM.
* Supported with online forms to Add / Change / Report bad URLs.

It also has a dark background, for those command line veterans.

The site is located at http://www.nfwa.com/os2/
Comments and suggestions are appreciated.

Description:

The popular OS/2 web directory, OS/2Land, has just debuted a new and
exciting Java-based chat room. The new chat facility works well under any
browser that fully supports Java, including Netscape/2, Netscape 3.0, MS
Internet Explorer, and others.

The Chat facility functions as a part of the ChatPlanet network, and
therefore provides access to all of the exciting/rich content of the many
chat rooms available on the most popular Java chat system on the internet.

Notes:

I make no guarantee about the capabilities/functionality/quality of this
applet or its participants. There may be channels available that you find
offensive. I apologize for this, but there is nothing more that I can do
to prevent it. I can't police the place 24 hours a day, however, I suspect
that most OS/2 users will be responsible enough to avoid causing any major
incidents. I hope that you enjoy your time in the chat facility!

New Release of Surf'nRexx from InnoVal

Reply-to: innoval@ibm.net
---------------------------------------------------------------------
ANNOUNCE: New Release of Surf'nRexx from InnoVal Systems Solutions, Inc.

Harrison, NY, January 21, 1997. InnoVal Systems Solutions, Inc. has released
version 1.3 of Surf'nRexx. This is a free update for licensed users. For
additional information please see http://www.innoval.com

WHAT'S NEW IN THIS RELEASE:

- webcopy/webnew/webinfo/webcrawl now handle password-protected
URLs: specify http://userid:password*www.domain.suf/dirname/
as the URL you want to retrieve

- webcopy/webnew/webinfo/webcrawl now use HTTP 1.0 instead of .9, in order
to be able to do the password-protected URLs; it also means you can do
everything else HTTP 1.0 can do, such as tell "fibs" about what "browser"
you are, if you've a mind to do so

- webcrawl now handles mixed-case directory and page names

- webcrawl now handles .shtml files (server side includes)

- webcopy/webnew's version 1.2 fix for the mixed-case problem was still
flawed; now all better

- webcopy/webnew/webcrawl used to attach / to the beginning of a path name
even if it already started with /, which made it start with // so that it
didn't work anymore

- webcopy/webnew/webinfo now detect "Document Moved" return codes and ignore
the moved page and automatically retrieve the page to which it moved

- webcrawl now reports the HTTP 1.0 return code so that you can tell if a
page contained nothing but "Not Found" or "Document Moved" or other
important things like that, instead of saying nothing but "Active"
whenever any sort of page at all was retrieved

- sendnote in the free upgrade version had a little typo that would have
made outgoing notes have a month of "0" instead of "Apr" when April gets
here

- webcrawl's default maximums (for number of levels of links, and number of
links to check) were too low; changed from 4 and 50 to 6 and 150

- webcrawl no longer checks for links in web pages on other servers; this
makes it possible to check your entire site without also checking the
entire site of every other site to which yours links

- webcrawl had a problem with interpreting the correct pathname on links
which didn't specify one; for example, a reference which said "index.htm"
would be interpreted as "/index.htm" even though the current page was in a
subdirectory

Post Road News Reader

Harrison, New York, January 23, 1997. InnoVal Systems Solutions, Inc.
announced today that it is withdrawing the Post Road News Reader from
marketing and has suspended plans to enhance the product. Technical support
for current customers will continue through the remainder of 1997 via email
addressed to postsvc@ibm.net.

Commenting on the announcement, Dan Porter, the president of InnoVal said,
"This is not something that I want to do. I had hoped that we would be able to
find the resource and time to fix the problems that have plagued this news
reader for some of our customers, particularly those using Warp 4. We failed
with this product and we let customers down." Porter went on to say, " There
are some who will interpret this as a move away from OS/2 by our company. It
is not. It is, instead, a hard choice that all solid companies must make from
time to time. This will allow us to focus our OS/2 development and support
resource for our consumer products on those products that are most in demand.
This includes the Post Road Mailer, NetExtra, Surf'nRexx and new consumer
product that will be available this year.

Earlier this week, InnoVal released an updated version of Surf'nRexx (Release
1.3) and announced that it would release a new version of the Post Road Mailer
(Release 2.5) by mid-February. The Post Road Mailer was recently honored by
WarpOnline with an Editors Choice Award for one of the best OS/2 products in
1996.

"I won't deny that this decision to withdraw the news reader is a bottom line
decision," said Porter. "It is. OS/2 is very important to us. We have every
intention of remaining strong in the OS/2 marketplace. In the next few days we
will be launching a campaign to promote the use of OS/2 and establishing an
OS/2 Users Advertising Fund. Part of the proceeds from new sales of the Post
Road Mailer and NetExtra will be used to support this campaign. Details will
be released soon."

Customers who have questions about this announcement should write to InnoVal
Customer Service. The address is innoval@ibm.net.

REXX Reference Summary Handbook - Fourth Edition update

Reply-to: dgoran@cfsrexx.com
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The fourth edition of the best-selling, award-winning REXX Reference
Summary Handbook (Dick Goran - ISBN 0-9639854-3-4) is now available. This new
edition of the Handbook, which has been updated for Warp 4, is a 228 page,
"keyboard-side" companion which details all of the instructions and functions
in SAA REXX distributed with OS/2 Version 2.1, OS/2 Warp Version 3, and OS/2
Warp Version 4.

The Handbook also documents all of the functions in the new REXXUTIL API
distributed on Warp 4 with Object REXX. The extensive index occupies an
additional 38 pages. The Table of Contents for the Handbook is available for
viewing at http://www.cfsrexx.com/rrsh-4/.

The Handbook, as indicated by its subtitle "Everything You Wanted To Know
About Creating OS/2 Workplace Shell Objects With REXX, But Didn't Know Where
To Look", also contains all of the information necessary to create and
maintain Workplace Shell objects in OS/2.

The Handbook details all of the functions included in the following
Application Program Interfaces (APIs):

REXXUTIL - (Classic REXX) - Updated
This default version of REXXUTIL, distributed with all
versions of OS/2 beginning with 2.1, contains 40
functions, easily recognizable by their Sys prefix,
that deal primarily with: OS/2 system commands, user or
text screen input/output (I/O), and OS/2 INI file I/O.

REXXUTIL - (Object REXX) - New
This expanded version of REXXUTIL, available with
Object REXX, contains an additional 38 functions beyond
those available in the Classic REXXUTIL. The additional
functions include support for Event and Mutex

cross referenced index, the Handbook is an important tool that will allow the
novice REXX user and the REXX veteran alike to easily locate any needed
function as well as identifying the various functions which deal with a
particular subject.

The Handbook has been accredited by IBM for use of the official OS/2 logo
and C F S Nevada, Inc. is a member of the IBM Independent Vendor league and
Premier Developer Application Program.

LXOPT Withdrawn
Reply-to: funcsoft@cix.compulink.co.uk
---------------------------------------------------------------------
FUNCTIONAL SOFTWARE LTD. 16 January 1997

With regret I have to announce that on 31st of January 1997 LXOPT will be
withdrawn from sale. After this date it will not be possible to obtain new
LXOPT licenses or to extend existing licenses for additional users.

While LXOPT has been a technical success and is in use by many leading OS/2
development sites, it has never achieved the popularity required to secure its
future. Recent events, such as the public repositioning of OS/2 away from the
consumer desktop, removal of "Games" support, failure of OS/2 for PPC, the
move to fee based support, disbanding of the EMEA DAP and poor distribution of
the WARP 4 Beta have all contributed to a general decline in OS/2 development.
While the current emphasis on OS/2 as a platform for JAVA is to be applauded,
it does little to encourage OS/2 specific software.

Technical support for the demonstration version of LXOPT will end on 24th
January 1997. Those maintaining ftp/web sites containing the demonstration
version (LXOPTnnn.ZIP - where nnn represents the version number) are requested
to remove this file on or before this date.

Registered users of LXOPT have already been contacted directly with details of
future support arrangements. For purchasers of LXOPT who have not yet
registered the software with Functional Software these arrangements are:

LXOPT Updates:
LXOPT updates have always been issued free of charge to registered users.
After withdrawal there will be no further LXOPT releases. Maintenance
versions will still be provided for individual LXOPT users in response to
technical support queries but these will not be generally distributed.

Technical Support:
The withdrawal of any software product inevitably affects the availability of
technical support. As a registered LXOPT user full technical support
(including software fixes where needed) will be provided for a period of six
months from withdrawal. After 30th June 1997 no further alterations to the
software will be made. All other technical support will continue until 31st
January 1998 after which all support will cease.

Technical support via the Compuserve Id 100325,3650 will cease immediately.
Compuserve users should direct technical support queries to the internet
address funcsoft@cix.compulink.co.uk

I would like to thank the OS/2 development community for the enthusiasm,
encouragement and support that you have provided over the last few years. I
hope that you will find the arrangements described above reasonable in the
circumstances. If you have any comments please contact me via
funcsoft@cix.compulink.co.uk and I will attempt to resolve any problems you
may have.

beta FixPak 1 from IBM for Warp v4.0

Reply-to: trowe@cdr.wisc.edu
---------------------------------------------------------------------
IBM has FixPak 1, but not for general release. For information call IBM at
800-992-4777. They only want to provide it to people who *need* it for a very
specific reason. That's why it's not really public. If you get it from them,
please don't post make it available on the internet or BBS's.

IBM: Statement regarding FixPaks
Reply-to: tsipple@us.ibm.com (Timothy F. Sipples)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
[Moderator note: the following is a reply I received from an IBM
representative regarding IBM's FixPak policies. I hope this will help lower
the apparent level of confusion among some in the OS/2 community.]

In brief, if a FixPak appears on an IBM-run Internet site, and the FixPak is
not otherwise marked "test" or "beta" in some fashion, then it is official.
We will make announcements about the availability of officially released
FixPaks. This information is collected on our Web site in our list of the
latest service levels for all our software products. Our Web site is at
http://ps.software.ibm.com.

We do, however, distribute FixPaks for testing, and we would sincerely
appreciate those people who are testing FixPaks *not* to redistribute the test
versions. It's a form of piracy, frankly, that is causing quite a bit of
confusion.

We may make announcements with recommendations about a particular FixPak (such
as recommendations that it only be used in certain circumstances). Also, we
strongly recommend that no one install a FixPak unless it contains a specific
fix which is absolutely needed or unless IBM (or a qualified partner) has
specifically recommended its installation.

Finally, FixPaks often are designed for a specific national language version
of our software, so make sure you're installing the right version. (We
include checks with most of our FixPaks to make sure that only the correct
version is installed.)

Please let us deliver quality software service. We appreciate how eager
people are to receive the latest versions of IBM software, but we would
appreciate our testers not redistributing FixPaks that are not yet officially
released. Thanks!

There's now a mailing list for users running Corel Office for Java under Warp.
Just send an email to
add-cojwarp@tsst.halifax.ns.ca

Since smart folks run Warp, you don't need to worry about 'subscribe' lines or
other signs of an unintelligent 'bot. :-) To get a daily digest instead send
email to
add-cojwarp-d@tsst.halifax.ns.ca

There's also a handy 'tips' page at
http://www.geocities.com/siliconvalley/2045/coj1.html
that'll help you get Office up and running, and where useful info such as how
to get the Jan 22 refresh of JavaOS2 (faster, and fixes the javax.dll problem
of Jan 10)

Ahead Warp 4!

Cheers,
Sandy

Corel has announced availability of their Corel Office for Java, a
comprehensive suite of business applications including the QuattroPro
spreadsheet, WordPerfect wordprocessor, and a personal information organizer
with electronic mail. Printing and file saving/loading is supported when
Office for Java is run as a trusted Java application (on an intranet or on
individual computers and devices).

Corel Office for Java runs on all Java Version 1.02 (or later) platforms and
devices, including IBM OS/2 Warp Version 4 (or Version 3 with added Java
support) and the IBM Network Computer. Office for Java also works with all
popular Internet browsers, including Netscape Navigator. U.S. list price is
$79.95. A trial version of Corel Office for Java is available for download
from Corel's Web page on the Internet at http://www.corel.com.

Corel Office for Java embraces the world of network computing and open
applications. The entire office suite, with comprehensive function, is
contained in a file less than 2.5 MB in size, demonstrating the enormous
performance advantages of Java and network computing. (The latest office
suite is nearly 100 times as large, making installation and maintenance on a
network slow and expensive for most companies.) Corel's suite can be
delivered across a network quickly and easily and is well suited to emerging
corporate intranets. Documents can be exchanged with any Java device and
platform, and popular printers are supported.

Corel joins the growing trend toward open, standard, network computing using
popular Web and Internet technologies. Java is the Internet standard for
applications.

For more information, please visit Corel's homepage on the Internet at

Shadowsoft and Stardock are proud to announce the release of the demo version
of TRIALS of BATTLE, OS/2's FIRST truly native first person action game, on
Stardock's Web page (http://www.stardock.com/tob.html).

This demo showcases the cutting edge of OS/2's multimedia technology using
OS/2's DIVE and DART APIs for direct video and sound output respectively.
These technologies bring to life a true 3D world multi-player world complete
with light sources and the ability to look completely up and completely down.

Additionally, the demo version of Trials of Battle allows users to play each
other on across local LAN, although the Internet and modem play that are in
the full version are not available in the demo.

For more information about Trials of Battle check out the Trials of Battle
section of Stardock's Web page.

TRIALS of BATTLE is OS/2's FIRST truly native first person action game.

Price: $49.95 normally but only a $45 introductory price!
Developed by: Shadowsoft
Published by Stardock

You may never have believed in alien abductions before but Trials of Battle
will make you a believer. Taken to a distant world, you must compete in the
ultimate arena of competition in your heavily armored hover tanks. Equipped
with weapons that are far beyond what is available on Earth and with deadly
extras to add a little surprise to your enemy's day, you are ready to face the
best of the best from all across the galaxy. You may be good but remember, no
human has ever made the rank of Battle Master!

Fast Action Battles in the arena!

Trials of Battle puts you in the cockpit of a hovertank. Before each battle,
you must buy equipment to add to your hovertank's weaponry, defenses, or
special abilities. During battle, you will compete against deadlier and
deadlier opponents. These opponents, either controlled by the computer or by
people on the network, on a modem, or via the Internet, will have the same
goal as you each round. After the battle, you can use your points to upgrade
your hover craft. Add plasma weapons or better armor or equip it with jump
jets or better sensors or tracking systems. You have the ability to modify
your hover craft to fit your playing style!

Play against the computer or against people via modem, LAN, or Internet!

While Trials of Battle's single player play is exceptional due to its native
OS/2 AI (artificial intelligence) engine, Trials of Battle really shines in
multiplayer play. If you have a modem, are on a network, or are on the
internet, you can play your friends (or strangers) in the arena. Unlike most
games (including Quake), Trials of Battle can combine the multiplayer options.
This means that if you are on a LAN but a friend of yours isn't, your friend
can call in and join the game with you and your friends on your LAN. Few games
can compete with Trials of Battle when it comes to multiplayer play.

Designed from the ground up for 32bit multitasking operating systems!

The gameplay of Trials of Battle could be described as a combination of Quake
(fast paced, true 3D texturing) and Mech Warrior (preparing your armored
vehicle, locking weapons, and hostile landscapes). This makes for very potent
play. Stardock believes that Trials of Battle may become the action game for
32bit operating systems. Trials of Battle is currently only available on OS/2
but Shadowsoft, the developers of Trials of Battle, hopes to be able to have
versions for Windows95 and WindowsNT later on so that the OS wars can take on
a new meaning...

Trials of Battle is the action game OS/2 users have been waiting for! Get it
today!

Here are some of the cool technical features of Trials of Battle:

MULTIPLAYER! If you're running OS/2 Warp Connect you can sit down and
fight your co-workers, roommates, or family on a local area network. Support
for playing over the modem or via internet is also available and you can even
connect them all together.
DART Sound Support! No action game would be playable without the ability
to have excellent mixed sound. Trials of Battle uses DART to get the best
digitized sound performance from OS/2 Warp possible. It is the first
commercial OS/2 game to support on the fly digital mixing.
DIVE For a modern first person action game to succeed, good video
performance is a must! Trials of Battle delivers great graphics combined with
great frame-rates (on a high end 486DX2 or better) to keep in immersed in the
Trials of Battle world!
A TRUE 3D World! Unlike DOOM, Trials of Battle delivers a truly 3D world
meaning you can be above or below your enemy as well as to the side!
Light Sources! Similar to Quake, Prey, and Unreal, Trials of Battle has
real light sources that illuminate the areas around them.
