Subject: OS/2 news and views are back (?)

News of out death were, well, somewhat exagerated... Our Last Newsletter
was the last newsletter for *January*. Thanks for all the messages (from
the ones who fell for it... ).

Our own Chris Graham from WarpSpeed Computers has released ver.2 of his
excellent Graham Utilities, more info follows ($110 on CDROM, $135 on
diskettes). And what Chris doesn't know about OS/2, HPFS, files and hard
drives just isn't worth knowing. And when I had a problem with my HD last
week, guess whom I called first ?

//thanks for help & suggestions, Chris - I haven't yet rebooted, when I
do, I'll let you know how it went - trouble is, I am always to busy to
reboot my PC - after all, that's why I use OS/2.... //

Next newleter -( or maybe one after that ?) we'll include a "special
offer": a downloadable zipped up bundle of mostly-OS/2-relevant URL
objects that we have collected....

RSM ver 4 update: CDs have been shipped from France, expected here within
10 days, anyone who bought ver 3.x will receive free upgrade as soon as we
get them....

The Graham Utilities for OS/2 - Version 2
===========================================================================
The Graham Utilities for OS/2 are the largest, most comprehensive suite of
disk, file and general utilities specifically written for the OS/2
operating system. The suite consists of 76 separate programs and modules. A complete
manual, which has been re-edited and expanded to 423 pages, is also
included on-line as an .INF file for easy access. The CD-ROM version also includes
the documentation in Adobe Acrobat, PostScript and HTML versions.

Designed to be a drop in replacement for The Norton Utilities for DOS, these utilities come second to none
in ease of use, reliability and features.

The Graham Utilities for OS/2 are the only utilities that have been
certified with the NSTL seal of approval. This logo signifies that they have been
tested by an independent laboratory to conform with all OS/2 testing
procedures.

TCP/IP Kits for OS/2 Warp

Reply-to: tsipple@us.ibm.com (Timothy F. Sipples)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
January 30, 1997

There has been considerable confusion about IBM's withdrawal of certain TCP/IP
products for OS/2. This advisory discusses that issue.

The only IBM TCP/IP Version 2 products for OS/2 that have been withdrawn are
those which are either already included with IBM TCP/IP Version 3 (or later)
or those which are directly available from third parties in enhanced form.
These kits include the base kit, DOS/Windows kit, Ultimail, DNS kit, and
others.

IBM TCP/IP Version 3 is included with OS/2 Warp Connect Version 3. IBM TCP/IP
Version 3.1 is included with OS/2 Warp Server, OS/2 Warp Server Advanced, and
OS/2 Warp Server Advanced SMP. IBM TCP/IP Version 4 is included with OS/2
Warp 4.

The IBM NFS (Network File System) client/server kit for OS/2 has *not* been
withdrawn! NFS provides cross-platform file and disk sharing across TCP/IP
networks, especially to AIX, Sun Solaris, HP-UX, Linux, and other UNIX
systems. IBM's NFS Kit for OS/2 provides both client and server capabilities
on OS/2 Warp, and resharing of NFS drives lets OS/2 Warp Server act as a
"bridge" between PC LANs and UNIX networks. This affordable kit is available
by ordering IBM part number 65G1255. This kit may be used on any release of
OS/2 Warp provided that the latest NFS service pack is installed. Also, for
best results, the kit should be installed in a separate directory, and that
directory should be listed last in OS/2 Warp's LIBPATH and/or PATH lines in
CONFIG.SYS. (In other words, any files included with TCP/IP Version 3 or
later should take priority over any past release versions of those same files
included with the NFS Kit, a TCP/IP Version 2 product.) IBM's NFS Kit is
compatible with all TCP/IP network connections supported by OS/2 Warp,
including SLIP, PPP, and LAN Distance.

Although the IBM X Window System Server Kit has been withdrawn, there are at
least two third party alternatives which offer new features and enhancements.
Hummingbird Communication's eXceed for OS/2 Warp and XFree86 for OS/2 Warp are
both available.

Most other IBM TCP/IP Version 2 kits and part numbers have been withdrawn,
including the "user packs" (bundles of multiple licenses). To take advantage
of discounts on multiple licenses, ask your IBM software dealer about IBM's
Software Advantage program (introduced after user packs).

IBM TCP/IP for DOS/Windows has been withdrawn. IBM recommends the new IBM
Internet Connection for Windows (now with LAN support) for DOS/Windows users.

The last available service packs for all withdrawn products are available
indefinitely from IBM Software Support at http://ps.software.ibm.com.
Withdrawal of products for new purchasers does not necessarily mean withdrawal
of technical support. Ask your IBM technical support specialist (or IBM
partner) about continuing support for any previous release, withdrawn software
product(s) you rely on.

Finally, there are many third party software packages for OS/2 Warp's TCP/IP,
including third party NFS kits. Please visit the OS/2 Warp Applications
Directory at http://www.mfi.com/softwareguide for more information on OS/2
Warp applications.

this out of my pocket, so please mail me and help us buy this URL. It
shouldn't cost too much, but once we have it, we will have it forever. I
anticipate being able to cover the cost of keeping it two years down the line
so it is just the initial cost I need to cover. Mail me before sending any
money so that I can let you know how much we are missing.
