Whenever we get any OS/2 related enquiries by email, we add your name to this mailing list.
If you do not wish to receive this newsletter, please reply with 'remove' on subject line, thanks.
We do appreciate your comments, BUT PLEASE, do not QUOTE entire mssg back, just the relevant lines will do....
===================================================================
Several people (who incidentally use MS e-mail products (of their employers'
choice - I should add)) have complained they do not get entire newsletter
with some of our long newsletters. As a trial, we will send this issue as an
attachment rather than contained in the message area. Please let me know if that causes any problems, thanks.

PMfax/FaxWorks tip #33:
(I think we have done these tips already, but as we got new readers asking, here it is again:)
Using "Maintain Log" option you can MOVE old faxes to a backup directory.
Make another fax object with optional paramater say: -lx:\fx\[Which log ?] and now you can open any of your old logs as the current log....

Have you ever wanted to rubber stamp your outgoing faxes ? Well, it's extremely easy to do, all you need, is some images in BMP format, then simply drag onto your fax image. Best is to place all of these in one folder, say "RubberStamps" so you can easily find them. And to help you get going, we have just made a page full of various stamps, from Approved to Urgent. If you wish, download FaxStamps from our WWW.

//please wait till this evening - I haven't uploaded it yet......//

From: Michael Ghodsi

Subject: Wav Editors for os/2

Is there any wav editor software for os/2 ???

I am a pro dj and I need some and am willing to pay for decent software.

Would you please take the time to see if you can find some because I
haven't been able to !!!

Thanks, Michael.
// If anyone has suggestions for Michael, please reply to him and copy to us, thanks.
BTW, Michael, "EasyKeys for OS/2" might have fitted the bill - but 30 days before the OS/2 version was due to ship, Microsoft has purchased the developer. OS/2 product was discontinued. True story. Also, have a look at some of the news below related to sound etc.//

OS/2 is irrelevant item #15,353:
The Australian's computer section [p36 Feb 11] (once again) has an OpenDoc story:
"OpenDoc borders on brilliant" where David Hewson states: "At the moment, OpenDoc runs only on Apple..." I have an OpenDoc folder here, does that mean my Warp4 runs Mac software, hmm ...???

OS/2 Update

I just happened to catch this little blurb on c|net:

IBM will by month's end ship an update to its OS/2 operating system
that adds support for Java version 1.02, company officials said today.
The company will post to its Web site files for updating the Java
support in the OS/2 Warp 3 and OS/2 Warp Connect client
packages, and for adding Java support for the first time to OS/2
Warp Server and OS/2 Warp Server SMP operating systems.
The update should increase Java application performance in the
client package by 60 percent, said Tim Thatcher, Java program
manager at IBM.

The web site they describe is http://www.software.ibm.com.

Megaclip version .02 released (freeware) (clipboard utility)
Organization: South_Valley_Internet

Reply-to: dee@garlic.com
---------------------------------------------------------------------
MEGACLIP VERSION .02 NOW AVAILABLE

Hollister, CA February 2, 1997 - Dan Libby announces that the second beta of
OS/2's premier clipboard utility has been made available for public testing.

Are you sick and tired of copying something to the clipboard only to have it
replaced seconds later by something else? Where did it go? The default OS/2
clipboard metaphor is incomplete. Real clipboards allow a person to put a
whole bunch of papers in it... fortunately so does Megaclip!!

MegaClip is a utility to manage multiple OS/2 PM clipboards. It is inspired in
part by the IBM EWS program "ManyClip", as well as a popular Windows clipboard
program. MegaClip's key feature over ManyClip is its ability to handle
bitmaps and metafiles in addition to text.

New features in version .02 include:

- Multiple clip selection/removal in container
- Settings notebook (with Warp 4 look)
- Memory options
- Save options
- Text clip defaults
- Bitmap clip defaults
- Window colors/fonts retained
- Clips may be renamed via ALT + mouse click
- Container window resizeable
- Strip newlines from text clips
- Arrange feature made WarpCenter aware (won't cover it)
- improved window management and drawing
- bug fixes

Other benefits include the ability to view more than one clipboard at a time
(multiple windows), to view details about the clip (date, time, size, etc),
and to 'hold' one clip in the system clipboard -- even while copying other
clips. Clips may be stored within the main program window or placed directly
on the desktop and it is possible to turn off 'Auto-Retrieve' so that only
desired clips are retained.

Availability:

You can download Megaclip at

Software MIDI player TiMidity for OS/2

Reply-to: doconno@cc.umanitoba.ca (Darwin O'Connor)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
TiMidity is a program for converting MIDI files to waveform data suitable for
output to conventional sound files (.wav, .au) or direct and in real time to
your sound card. It is a port of the UNIX program by Tuukka Toivonen. It will
play MIDI files with a sound quality on par with wavetable MIDI sound systems,
which is vastly superior to the FM MIDI sound systems on typical low-range
sound cards.

In order to output it to your sound card you require DART to be set up. OS/2
Warp 4 uses have it included. It is available for OS/2 Warp 3, but I'm not
certain how you are supposed to get it. The EMX runtime library is also
required.

TiMidity uses GUS patch files as sources for instruments samples. A complete
collection requires about 8MB+ of disk space and is necessary to play MIDIs
randomly download from the Internet. There is a package of two patches and
some test MIDI files so you can determine it the system will work for you
before you have to download all that.

This is distributed as Freeware under the GNU license. The source code is
available, and it is a useful example real-life of how to program using DART.

TiMidity for OS/2 is available at
http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~doconno/timidity.html

---------------------------------------------------------------------
The Henley College IT Services unit writes software to enhance its OS/2 LAN
Server network.

Download the file THCDASD.ZIP from the College's web site to obtain IT
Services' DASD utilities. These include BACKDASD, RESTDASD and SETDASD and
allow you to effectively set, backup and restore your disk allocations. Very
useful if you have many home drives on your system, but limited disk space.

You should be using OS/2 LAN Server 4.0 Advanced or OS/2 Warp Server advanced.

Use FTP to obtain the file THCDASD.ZIP. The anonymous FTP address is
FTP://ftp.henleycol.ac.uk/PUB/SOFTWARE/THCDASD.ZIP

Report feedback to the developers of the software at ssha@henleycol.ac.uk.
Installation program provides on-line documentation. The ZIP file requires
PKUNZIP2

The software is being distributed freely, without warranty, to allow the
College to see how useful its software could be on a wider scale.

Thanks.

Death of OS/2? I don't think so
Organization: Shadow Information Services

IBM readies OS/2 Warp for NCs
By Kristi Essick and Ed Scannell
InfoWorld Electric Feb 4, 1997

IBM is working on a thin client version of its OS/2 Warp operating
system, which it plans to achieve by layering a browser interface and
Java capabilities on top of the system's kernel.

The upcoming operating system will be a carefully carved-out piece of
the OS/2 Warp kernel together with a browser -- most likely an upcoming
version of Navigator that IBM and Netscape are jointly working on -- as
well as with the Java virtual machine.

This version of OS/2, which will become available later this year, will
be geared for use on network computers, said Donn Atkins, vice president
of marketing for IBM's personal software products, who spoke in Paris
this week.

Along with the Windows integration components the company announced
Monday, this new version of the operating system is part of IBM's
overall plan to make OS/2 the client and server operating system of
choice for corporations wishing to integrate network computers and
multiplatform PCs, Atkins said.

"IBM is shifting the focus of OS/2 to provide the best NC and Java
operating environment," Atkins said. However, with such a large base of
customers using a traditional client/server, OS/2 model, IBM is also
concerned with providing continued support for these
"enterprise-critical" applications, he said.

IBM is betting that corporations that have invested millions of dollars
in OS/2 client/server systems will accept NC-like machines because the
OS/2 operating system won't "force them to move all of their
mission-critical information to the Web," Atkins said.

The new operating system, referred to as Warp for NCs by one IBM
official, will leverage some of the more notable strengths of OS/2,
including the ability to simultaneously run DOS, Windows, and OS/2 Warp
applications.

"It will be put together so it can all be administered from a server
that allows IS departments finer control over [a network PC's]
functions, like allowing users to access certain functions but not
others,'' said one source close to the company.

With this version of the operating system, IBM is also aiming to solve
the difficulty that most existing thin clients -- including IBM's own
Network Station -- find in running applications across multiple
platforms. Also, IBM's Network Station currently runs a Java-only
operating system, which may not be completely practical for companies
that have a large investment in OS/2 servers, Atkins said.

"This is a problem even with the [Network Station]," said the source.
"It is running on a PowerPC [chip], and it requires Citrix software, and
that is not what users want. We are hearing from lots of users that they
want Intel-based systems."

With a browser tightly coupled to the OS/2 Warp kernel, users will be
able to easily change the basic look and feel of the interface: They
will be able to work with a browser-oriented interface or have a more
standard menu look and feel. The upcoming operating system will not use
OS/2 Warp's longtime Workplace Shell interface.

"The Workplace Shell will not be there. That is some of the fat that can
be taken out for thin clients,'' said the source.

Although Atkins said that thin clients running Warp for NCs can be
expected by year's end, just how quickly IBM will be able to deliver the
operating system will depend on internal decisions about the amount of
funding and number of people to be deployed on the project. Such
decisions should be made by the end of this month, according to sources
familiar with the project.

But by delivering Warp for NCs before the end of year, the company may
be able to extend the reach of OS/2 Warp to take advantage of a
burgeoning new market, thereby offering some hope to the operating
system's sagging fortunes.

Additionally, IBM will continue to add Web-focused features to Warp
server, such as Web-page serving capabilities and firewalls, Atkins
said.

10th Feb 97:
Today I received latest IBM BESTeam CD. The letter is dated 31st January 1997.
The CD they sent (Netscape Beta) expired one day before IBM sent it out, on
30 January 1997. It's got a nice graphic on the CD, will make a welcome addition
to our coffee coaster collection (miles better looking than WinNT CD, too).
(Though I do have to admit, BESTeam did send me last month an unexpired, fully usable, with equally attractive artwork inhouse copy of Warp4)

David Coursey Commentary, Computerworld

Reply-to: tsipple@us.ibm.com (Timothy F. Sipples)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Don't let Microsoft hijack Java
David Coursey

I don't live in the Sun "Java is all things" reality-distortion field, but I
think Java could prove very important to business and personal computing. The
Internet needs a platform, and Java wants to provide it.

Java also wants to be the guarantor of cross-platform application
compatibility. The guarantor of a single target environment for developers of
client/server applications. The competitor that keeps Microsoft honest and
Netscape et al. alive.

If you think those things are important, it's time to start voting with your
voice and your dollars. I'll point you to the ballot box in a moment.

Why the call to action? Barely a year after deciding to support Java,
Microsoft appears to be planning to run off with it. The company is working on
a native-code compiler for Java that would let developers build faster Java
applets but only if they're optimized for Windows [CW, Dec. 2]. That could
fragment Java and ruin cross-platform compatibility if your idea of
cross-platform is broader than Windows and NT.

Does the world need Microsoft to add all manner of proprietary enhancements to
Java? I hardly think so. I've said for some time that Microsoft has failed to
learn the lessons of the Internet. "Internet values" are to Microsoft as
"family values" are to politicians: nice to talk about but something else
entirely to commit to. Microsoft doesn't understand that the Internet
explosion took place because open standards finally won a battle though
certainly not the war.

For all the lip service it pays to openness, Microsoft is really more
interested in customer lock-in than in advancing the state of the art. That's
sad because Microsoft would be just as big and just as strong if it played on
a level field. The only difference is that the company would have more teams
to play against, and we'd all benefit from that

But I just happen to have a convenient way for you to fight back. If you'd
like to make your feelings known, drop by the Microsoft Wish List
(www.microsoft.com/support/feedback/mswish.htm) and leave a comment. Please
send me a copy, too. I'll make sure they get to the proper executives in
Redmond.

This is your chance to be heard. Tell Microsoft to adhere to the standard Java
implementation being created by Sun, Netscape and virtually the entire
non-Microsoft world. Tell Microsoft you want a standard virtual machine, not
something the company dreamed up to keep you locked in to its operating
systems, development tools and applications. Tell Microsoft that compatibility
and openness more than make up for whatever bells and whistles it can offer as
incentives for customer lock-in.

The next six months may decide whether Java grows up as a platform or is
relegated to the status of a programming language (which won't threaten
Microsoft platforms). By doing nothing, you vote for the latter. Only by
raising a stink by making yourself heard loud and clear can you prevent Java
from being shunted off to the language lab.

When Java was licensed to Microsoft, I was against the move, which I hope both
Sun and Netscape now regret. The vendors failed to prevent a hijacking, but
maybe it isn't too late for the will of the corporate customer.

When Microsoft offers you a nonstandard Java implementation with features
neither Sun nor Netscape support insist that you want your Java straight,
without additives.

Clone Cleaner 2.10 (duplicate files remover)
Reply-To: emarch@ais.net (Edward J. March Jr.)

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!! NEW RELEASE !!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Clone Cleaner Version 2.10

Clone Cleaner finds duplicate files that take up precious space on your hard
disk. Is you hard disk filling up with hard to manage directories of similar
files and data? Don't waste space any longer, use Clone Cleaner. It will
locate duplicate files across multiple disk drives, on both local and network
drives.

It can group the files together by name or by contents. So even though the
file names may be different and also be on different disk drive, if their
contents are same, they will be grouped together and found. Clone Cleaner is
the only disk utility capable of doing this. Of course you can find duplicate
files by file name also. You have options to filter by file size range and by
date range.

Clone cleaner can output an ASCII report file or a batch file or a REXX
script. The REXX script is very flexible in manipulating the files. Each field
(date time size path file and extension) can be used in any manner you like.
Clone Cleaner can be found on the following internet sites. Clone cleaner is
marketed as shareware, and it only $17.95 to register.

New features From 2.10
Searching inside .ZIP files
Enhanced note book settings
Multiple file masks
Include Directory list
Exclude Directory list
programable double click

PAS/16 and ESS soundcard driver updates (sound cards)
Reply-to: madbrain@netsrq.com
---------------------------------------------------------------------
At the end of last year, with the release of the first OS/2 application with
60 Hz real-time audio/video synchronization, Flight for OS/2, problems were
discovered in certain audio device drivers that could not keep up with the
high data rate and small audio buffer required by Flight/2; even though they
worked fine with most other DART applications, including Dual Module Player
and the Digital Sound & Music Interface Navigator for OS/2 plug-in.

Known affected drivers are :

- Media Vision Pro Audio series, including Spectrum / + / 16 / Studio
- All ESS soundcards

IBM, which authored the drivers, was made aware of the problems and just
released updates, which will appear shortly in the OS/2 Device Driver Pak, but
are already available on the Flight/2 page at :

http://www.polsci.wvu.edu/Madbrain/software.html#flight

I recommend all OS/2 users watch the Flight demo to discover the real
multimedia potential of Warp.

there were several that I have not been able to find. Because of this I am now

InJoy ticker server gets more bandwidth and new address

Reply-to: injoy@post3.tele.dk
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The InJoy ticker server that broadcasts service announcements to OS/2 users
all over the world was getting overloaded.

A new line has been installed and accordingly a new server IP address has been
assigned. Please point your InJoy tickers to this new address:

198.64.226.104

The InJoy server peeks every night with about 120-150 simultaneously connected
users, making it a power exposure facility. The InJoy ticker is not a new
commercial center, but a service tool that should keep you updated with the
hottest sites and most interesting news of the Internet.

The ticker is still a young product, but check it out and give me the ideas
and the input needed to make it a tool of tomorrow..

InJoy Ranks Number One in BMT Micro's Worldwide OS/2 Sales

F/X Communications Announces a New InJoy Milestone

---> InJoy Ranks Number One in BMT Micro's Worldwide OS/2 Sales <---

Holbaek, Denmark, February 3, 1997. Late last week, after several months in
the top five, the InJoy Dialer moved into first place in OS/2 shareware sales,
worldwide.

InJoy is not just another dialer, nor a front-end program using existing Warp
code. Instead, InJoy provides an entirely new implementation of the PPP point
to point link protocol. Additionally, InJoy provides a very rich feature list,
not available in any other single solution. Rather than list them here, you
are invited to browse http://www.fx.dk/injoy/ and learn why InJoy is number
one.

F/X Communications takes this opportunity to again thank all who registered
during the beta phase which began last May, and to now thank those registering
during InJoy's first month of general availability. Of course, just as
important is the need to publicly thank all those who continue to help resolve
the technical issues as InJoy evolves. Too numerous to name individually, they
are collectively known as Team InJoy and as members of the InJoy Mail List --
from list administrator to the newest member, posing the next tough question
-- they all contributed to InJoy's rise to the number one slot.

We got to the top, together, by listening to the users, caring enough to
produce a high quality product and being willing to put in lots and lots of
frustrating, late night work.

Thanks a million! There's more to come,

Bjarne Jensen
President, F/X Communications

The Rexx FAQ has been updated again with even more, I hope, useful
information. I'm working on a plain text version of the FAQ for those of you
who might prefer to download a copy to read or reference easily.

The framed version is available at
http://www.mindspring.com/~dave_martin/RexxFAQ.html

and the unframed version is available at

As always your comments and suggestions would be welcomed.

Process Commander has been updated with Fixkit #1.

It is available on Stardock's web site http://www.stardock.com

Process Commander is a new utility that lets OS/2 users recover from system
hangs as well as make OS/2 operate the way the user wants it to.

The Stardock Process Commander webpage has been completely re-done for users
who want to check it out:

Output color PostScript from OS/2 drivers
Organization: MBnet - Manitoba's Connection To The Internet

I downloaded and installed a very new PostScript driver for OS/2
Warp. This thing is supposed to do color now. They completely
overhauled the Print Setup dialog to look similar to the HP util. *Very*
nice. The GenericPosScript driver for OS/2 still doesn't output in color
so I'll have to install a PostScript printer driver for a printer that I
don't have and select "Print to File".

This is going to be really good if it works.

The updated PostScript driver for OS/2 is available from the OS/2
Device Driver Online repository. The filename is pscript.exe. All you
have to do is to download the file into a \temp directory, type pscript
to extract, then read the readme(s).

PlusPak for OS/2 nearly here!

Organization: Stardock Systems, Inc.

Stardock's PlusPak arrives this Friday and Stardock's on-line commerce
server (see "Stardock goes On-Line" thread).

Originally, the PlusPak was going to be a $50 to $70 package that is
similar to a certain similar package on a certain other platform...

After talking about the PlusPak on the Internet and Compuserve, we
decided it would make sense to move to a component-based strategy with
future products. That is, keep them small, keep them inexpensive so that
our customers can pick and choose the features they want and only pay
for the features they want.

The end result is that PlusPak not only launches our new On-line
commerce server, it also launches Stardock's new strategy (mentioned
above).

The PlusPak gives OS/2 users the ability to create real-live "Themes" to
trade with others. It also comes with a whole bunch (~20) themes
created by Stardock. These themes will make the icons in OS/2 look
incredible. Any Object Desktop user has seen some of the icons in SDS
Extras, these are even better.

Moreover, with this move towards on-line commerce, Stardock is in a
position of improving our products on a shorter basis and making them
available far sooner than otherwise thought.

I just made visible the PlusPak for OS/2 info on our website:

http://www.stardock.com.

Thanks for your input. This Friday, you'll be able to order and
download the PlusPak!
