FREEWARE: POP3Spy Version 1.5 available
//very nifty little 'TSR', I use it//
---------------------------------------------------------------------
POP3Spy V1.5 is available now!
What this software does
-----------------------
Are you tired of checking your E-Mail every few minutes ?
You do not want to have your E-Mail Client running all the time to keep you
informed about incoming mail ?
The POP3 Spy is a small program which checks your mail every few minutes and
informs you in many different ways:
- The window interior displays the number of messages on your mail server.
The window is red if you don't have messages on your server and it turns
to green as soon as there is at least on message on your server. It is not
necessary to see the entire window; if you can see a small part of it, you
see if there is some mail waiting.
- The icon changes. When running this program minimized, you can check the
icon on your desktop. The window title also tells you how many messages
are waiting.
- The software can inform you by playing a tune using the system speaker.
- It can even automatically launch your E-Mail client

DAYTIME servers!
What you need
-------------
You need Warp V3 or Warp V4 with TCP/IP or the IBM Internet Access Kit
(IAK) installed to run this software.
Where can I install this NTP client
-----------------------------------
You can install this client on any OS/2 system which has access to the
internet.

SOFTWARE: XFolder WPS enhancer V030beta
---------------------------------------------------------------------
XFolder is my WPfolder replacement class, whose V0.21 was recently announced
in WarpCast. A new beta version (0.30) is now out. It can be downloaded from
my website:
http://www2.rz.hu-berlin.de/~h0444vnd/os2.htm
XFolder allows for freely adding items to the context menus of all folders
at once. This is done by simply putting WPS objects into a certain
configuration folder, which is read by XFolder upon requesting a folder
context menu.
I'd be grateful for comments and suggestions.

Phoenix OS/2 Society Feb 10, Spitfire's In Charge!
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Show me the money (management)
Money management gets much more interesting when it's your money at stake.
As we approach tax-time, the subject gets almost fascinating. So we're
particularly glad to be able to welcome Bruce Landeck, president of Spitfire
Software, as guest speaker at the February general meeting. On Tuesday,
February 10, Bruce will show us his company's financial management software
for OS/2, InCharge!
When and where
The general meeting is at 7:00pm on Tuesday, February 10, at the Mountain
Preserve Reception Center, 1431 East Dunlap. The "random access" Q&A session
starts at 6:30pm. We're sure to reconvene after the meeting at Coyote
Springs.

FREEWARE: FreeType/2 a free TrueType driver for all OS/2s
---------------------------------------------------------------------
FREETYPE/2 BETA
is now available for public download.
FreeType/2 is an OS/2 TrueType Font Driver DLL based on the FreeType engine.
It replaces IBM's TRUETYPE.DLL in Warp 4, but it can be installed on older
versions of OS/2 also.
Some features of FreeType/2:
- Seamless integration with OS/2. You almost don't know it's there!
- Supports outlines for further glyph manipulation
- Supports national characters (if provided in the font). Tested only with
Latin 2 languages so far
- Works fine with older releases of OS/2. Tested on Warp 3 and OS/2 2.1
- It's free
- And last but not least, it renders fonts better than the IBM engine!
See the FreeType/2 web page for more information and download instructions :
http://www.physiol.med.tu-muenchen.de/~robert/ft_os2/index.html
Information on the FreeType engine, on which the driver is built, can be
found at :

New SuperDisk Support
---------------------------------------------------------------------
SuperDisk LS-120 Drive Support
OS/2 Warp now supports the SuperDisk LS-120 Drive. The IBM OS/2 Device
Driver Pak On-Linewill have an OS/2 device driver for the LS-120 drive and
instructions for installation. This drive will be supported on OS/2 Warp
systems by simply adding the OS/2 device driver statement
BASEDEV=IBMATAPI.FLT to your CONFIG.SYS and copying the device driver
IBMATAPI.FLT to the \OS2\BOOT directory. You need to restart your system
after adding the statement to your CONFIG.SYS. You can then use the LS-120
removable cartridges in the industry standard mode (as a large floppy).
The SuperDisk LS-120 drive supports 120-MB diskettes and is compatible with
3.5 inch 1.44-MB standard diskettes at five times the performance of
standard diskette drives and will be a popular option for laptops.
SuperDisk LS-120 drives are available on Compaq Deskpro and ProLinea
Personal Computers and should be available for the IBM ThinkPad 770
SuperDisk UltraBay II during the during the first quarter 1998. (Parallel
attached LS-120 drives require a driver from the drive vendor).
The SuperDisk LS-120 device driver, IBMATAPI.FLT, will be available in
January 1998 from the IBM OS/2 Device Driver Pak On-Line at the following

IBM Java FAQ & Java and Warp 3
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Some of you may have missed this information in the excitement after
the Java 1.1.4 release was announced.
Java has been updated to the 1.1.x level. IBM is supporting a "released"
level 1.1.4 Java on Warp 4 (Merlin). see:
http://www.ibm.com/java/jdk/jdkfaq/
Java for Warp 3.0 is currently a Java level 1.02 which is a "beta" release
version. The IBM site indicates that IBM will not necessarily be porting
later Java versions to OS/2 Warp 3.0. see:
http://www.ibm.com/java/jdk/jdkfaq/faq26.html
and http://ncc.hursley.ibm.com/javainfo/Developer/index.html
Since I am currently using Warp 3.0, I am concerned because new Java
applications are requiring 1.1 level.

SOFTWARE: Nota Musica Sequencer 2.02
---------------------------------------------------------------------
This is to announce the release of Nota Musica Sequencer 2.02. Nota Musica
Sequencer is a MIDI sequencer which allows playback and recording through
OS/2's RealTime MIDI subsystem.
The distribution archive of the previous version 1.01 of Nota Musica
Sequencer had some files missing which prevented the English language
version from being installed properly. Nota Musica Sequencer 2.02 fixes
this.
Nota Musica Sequencer 2.02 also fixes a bug that cause the sequencer to
crash after loading a MIDI type 1 files.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by the incomplete
distribution of Nota Musica Sequencer 1.01.

PGP 5.0 For OS/2 Beta II Release
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,
This is to let you know that I have released a BETA II version of PGP 5.0
for OS/2.
There were a couple of nasty bugs that needed to be fixed ASAP:
Long File Names:
PGP will now replace the *.xxx file extension when encrypting/signing
files rather than appending a *.xxx.pgp or *.xxx.asc. This was to solve
problems with running PGP 5.0 on FAT filesystems that can only handle 8.3
filenames.
Extra CR:
When extracting a PGP key and extra CR was being added to every line. This
has been fixed. All PGP generated files should now use CR-LF for a
"end-of-line" marker.
The "fix" for Post Road Mailer is included in this archive as pgpprm.zip.
Nothing has changed in this file so if you already have it you don't need
to replace it.
Several people have asked about broken links. My website is currently
undergoing remodeling so there are some web pages and files that have not
been uploaded. Give me a few days and everything should be up and running.

TCP/IP Portscanner 1.7 available
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The TCP/IP Portscanner V1.7 is available now!
// another nifty app from POP SPY author//
What this software does
-----------------------
This software scans well known TCP/IP ports of one or more servers for
active services. You can specify a single server name (e.g.
www.myserver.com) or a range of IP-Addresses (e.g. from 192.85.184.12 to
192.85.184.66). You can also put a list of IP-Addresses into a simple ASCII
file (one IP-Address per line) and process this list. Be aware that
hostnames are not allowed in an IP-Address file. Active port numbers are
being listed with the name of the service commonly used on this port.
You can get the latest release of this software at:
http://www.horgen.net/rem/software/

The Department of Justice has unearthed an internal
Microsoft document to help bolster its complaint that the
software giant is unlawfully using Windows to push its
Internet browser and violating a 1995 consent decree. An
E-mail from Microsoft Senior Vice President Jim Allchin to
Group Vice President Paul Maritz read, in part, "My
conclusion is that we must leverage Windows more. Treating
IE as just an add-on to Windows, which is cross-platform
[is] losing our biggest advantage -- Windows market share."

We wuz wrong...
(I might have already run this correction... or did I?... anyway):
>|for those who came in late: WillZ once resigned as the editor of PC

Wrong on both points.
Will wrote for PC Week and PC Magazine as a columnist. He was never
editor. He resigned from PC Week (I think it was back in 1992, perhaps
1993) and because of the contractual issues also wound up giving up his
column at PC Magazine, though he had no quarrel with its management.

This really works! Just send 5*10^50 atoms of hydrogen to each of the
five star systems listed below.
Then, add your own system to the top of the list, delete the system at
the bottom, and send out copies of this message to 100 other solar systems.
If you follow these instructions, within 0.25 of a galactic rotation you
are guaranteed to recieve enough hydrogen in return to power your

The developers kit for MPTS is on the Warp CD. You just need to unzip

There is also a Sockets++ library for OS/2 which works well ...
