OS/2 News, Views and PRs 8.5.97

Happy May 1st, Labor Day.

Anyone march ? When I was a kid we used to get a day off school, so we
could march.

*nobody* runs OS/2 anymore, right ?

The Office of Surveyor General are in the process of purchasing a 4th
GPS base station to compliment the current network which has sites
located at Ballarat, Bendigo and Melbourne.

The current base stations are running under OS/2 Warp 3, we intend to
run Warp 4 on the new PC.

Peter Oates from State Data Centre is putting it in.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
John Fairfax Limited (of SMH fame) have been testing OS/2 for use as
desktop platform.

Whilst is seems, due to change in application they use, they might not
implement it, the MIS people who were evaluating it told us:

It's an excellent system, extremely relaible, we really like it.
We wish we would be using it.

but you wouldn't read about it in the SMH, would you ?
------------------------------------------------------------------------
sorry, no picture of Sarah Lillan Newman in this issue:

>so when will you email me a pic ?

When I can afford a scanner ;). I will have to bring her in instead!

Cheers,

Alex.

Alex, last weekend, I was trying to put Roman (2 2/12yo) to sleep in his
cot, 30 seconds after I put him in the cot and lifted the side, he was
running along the corridor, with a huge GRIN, calling: I GOT OUT ! I GOT
OUT !
So I took him back, and said: show me how you got out, and with even BIGGER
GRIN, he did.
Oh well, no more cot...

Copy pinball.sys from NT 3.51 into \winnt\system32\drivers and import the
following file into your registry with regedit32:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Pinball]
"ErrorControl"=dword:00000001
"Group"="Boot File System"
"Start"=dword:00000001
"Type"=dword:00000002

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Pinball\Enum]
"0"="Root\\LEGACY_PINBALL\\0000"
"Count"=dword:00000001
"NextInstance"=dword:00000001

>Is the a URL which documents this?

I've got a friend who actually wrote an installer for pinball.sys.
Check around his page at:

I don't know if it's still there, as he's been trying to get me to
"join the Dark Side (TM)."

New Remote Source Code Debugger for OS/2

IBM proudly introduces ICAT, a new remote debugger to debug source-level code
for OS/2 Warp device drivers, installable file system (IFS) binaries, and
applications -- all to increase productivity in correcting errors. It's
available now at http://service.software.ibm.com/icat.

ICAT has the familiar IBM presentation manager debugger (IPMD) interface but
with the necessary enhancements to allow remote debugging.

This debugger does not stand alone like IPMD. It is more like the current
kernel debugger requiring a two system setup and entering the kernel as a
super user that can jump from process to process without restarting it.

Some of the features ICAT delivers are:

Source Code debugging of:
1. Device Drivers ( C, Assembly, GRADD and ADD )
2. IFS ( Installable File Systems )
3. Kernel & Subsystems
4. Applications

With support for the following compilers and assemblers:
1. Visual Age C++
2. ALP ( Assembly Language Processor )
3. Microsoft C
4. MASM 5 and 6
5. Watcom C++
6. Metaware High C++

as well as:
Pentium I/O Breakpoint Support
MMX Register Support
Stack unwind across ring boundaries, thunks, 16 and 32
bit code
Passthru window into the kernel debugger
And much, much more.

We're anxious for developers to try ICAT and provide feedback we can use to
make this product better. Please use the ICAT web site to report problems,
give feedback, or request future enhancements.

OS/2 Warp Features Delivered via the Internet

Customers Can Get Early Electronic Access To New Features
Austin, TX, April 29, 1997 . . . OS/2 Warp 4 and OS/2 Warp Server customers
now have an easier way to get the latest features and updates for their OS/2
products with the availability of Software Choice, IBM's new software delivery
program via periodic CDs or the Internet.

Software Choice offers eligible customers access to new features and updates,
including those related to network computing, in advance of the next product
release date making it easier to manage, test, and certify their applications.

"Our customers need to be able to add function without compromising their
current application set," said Donn Atkins, vice president of marketing for
IBM's Personal Software Products. "Every customer does not always require
every new feature or function that we may offer in a new release. With
Software Choice our customers will have the option of choosing the right
feature set for their computing environment without having to rollout a
complete upgrade across their enterprise."

Features When You Want Them
Software Choice is easily accessed through the Internet and offers eligible
customers several options in selecting product downloads. In addition to
technical information and hot links, customers can choose from a catalog of
downloadable features and updates that will be available to customer with
Internet access -- many at no charge.

Most new network computing functions, along with the periodic CD distribution,
will be reserved for IBM customers who have purchased an eligible Upgrade
Protection option under one of IBM's software purchasing agreements.

By visiting the Software Choice Web site, eligible customers can download many
of the features and updates that are available today for both OS/2 Warp and
OS/2 Warp Server, such as Java 1.02, and Netscape Navigator 2.02. In
addition, for OS/2 Warp Server customers, Network Logon for Windows 95 and NT
clients, and Network Neighborhood Browser Support, will be available for
download. Customers will find the Software Choice Web site at
http://www.software.ibm.com/os2warp.

As new features and updates become available, such as Java 1.1, TCP/IP
Enhancements, and support for the IBM Network Station Support, eligible
customers will be able to download these from the Web site, rather than
waiting for the next product release.

Through the Upgrade Protection Options for Software Advantage or Strategic
Account Offering (SAO), OS/2 Warp 4 and OS/2 Warp Server customers will have
access to the subscription content of Software Choice, as well as receive a
periodic CD distribution of the applicable features and updates.

Note: IBM made a worldwide announcement of Software Choice on
April 30, 1997. IBM Asia Pacific will phase in availability country by
country, beginning with Australia.

****Internet Framing and Copyright****

Many internet sites indiscriminately link to other sites. However, that may
soon change. In February 1997, a Complaint was lodged by The Washington
Post, Time Inc, Cable News Network, Times Mirror, Dow Jones and Reuters New
Media against Totalnews in the New York District Court. The plaintiffs
claim that Totalnews has, by "framing" and "linking" to their content on the
Totalnews site, amongst other things, misappropriated valuable commercial
property, engaged in false representation and advertising, committed Federal
Trademark dilution, infringed their registered trade and service marks and
copyright (including domain names). Totalnews, which was launched in
October 1996 has stated its intention to defend its actions. The outcome of
this case will be important in shaping the future of the use of trade marks
and copyright material and the "linking" to same on the Internet. As income
derived from advertising on the Internet continues to grow, so to do the
risks and potential damages which may be awarded against an infringing
party. As with all other forms of media such as books, films etc permission
should be obtained from the author prior to using the work in any way to
avoid risky and expensive litigation.

_____IBM To Introduce Network Computing Version Of OS/2___
IBM will introduce a version of OS/2 Warp Server next week at
its Technical Interchange conference in St. Louis, optimized
for network computing. Bluebird is a derivative of OS/2 Warp
Server that stores as many as six different desktop
configurations on the server. Those client systems are pushed
down to desktop computers when users boot up. The server also
stores data files and the user's access to network services.

Bluebird's client systems include 3270 and 5250 mainframe
terminal emulation, a browser desktop, a DOS/Windows 3.1
desktop, or a slimmed-down version of the Workplace Shell and
Presentation Manager. All client systems include the Java
Virtual Machine, so every desktop has Java application
support, according to Steven King, product manager for Warp
Server at IBM's personal software products division in
Austin, Texas. Bluebird will support multiple network cards
in one PC and automatically perform load balancing to
maximize network throughput.

The first release of Bluebird will run on Intel-based PCs,
and all client systems are small enough for a 486-class
machine, IBM officials say. IBM expects to ship Bluebird
around the Comdex trade show in November. -- Andy Patrizio
