New OS/2 Warp News & Rumors Page
Java** Momentum
====================================================================
Victor Bien will be at Sutherland PC Market on Sunday 24 August at his
OS/2 stand, drop in and say hi, OS/2 apps demoed and 4 sale.
====================================================================
IBM had a large stand at the InterNet World Australia.
Not one of their computers is runing OS/2. There is no information on OS/2
at the stand. Next door, Lotus has a deal on Domino Starter Pack BUT *only*
for WinNT. "Normal" Domino includes OS/2 server & client as well as NT/95
etc etc.
If you wanted to set up an OS/2 Internet server, you wouldn't get much more
than vacant blank stares from either Lotus or IBM's staff at the show.
But if you DO want to set up an OS/2 server, check CMP's Intranet
Construction Site article by Esther "Microsoft's biggest and most dangerous
contribution to the software industry may be the degree to which it has
lowered the user expectations" Schindler:
http://techweb.cmp.com/intranet-build/2j.htm.
Also on display latest IBM ThinkPads, only available with
either W95 or WinNT. When asked about OS/2, I was told I should be able to
buy OS/2 and it should run on the ThinkPad. The TP brochure is emblazoned
with "Genuine Microsoft Products and Microsoft NT compatible" logos but no
OS/2 logo.

New OS/2 Warp News & Rumors Page.
There is a new OS/2 News and Rumors page at:
http://www.hartnell.cc.ca.us/hacnc/altos/OS2News.html
It is hosted by Steve Wendt and is actually quite nice. He has news
about IOTTA, Warpstock and Voice. He even has a screen shot of M$ IE
Exploder of OS/2. Now I realize that the IE for OS/2 may be more
fantasy than reality, but what the hell it's fun to look at. Also Steve
does state that it's probably a hoax.
Check it out!

Java** Momentum - Unusually Early Widespread Acceptance
According to a recent Zona Research survey of 279 information
technology (IT) professionals working for organizations with 250 or
more computer users, 47 percent of enterprise organizations are
already using Java. The remaining 53 percent expect to deploy it
within the next 12 months. Zona Researchers found it unusually early
in the technology curve to see such widespread acceptance.
For more about Java 1.1 for OS/2 Warp, see IBM's Software Choice web
site at: http://service.software.ibm.com/asd-bin/doc/index.html.
OS/2 Warp Server Performance Comparisons
File and print sharing have long been an important measure of Network
Operating System (NOS) performance. Various industry publications
and independent test labs have made comparisons between the industry
leaders in the NOS marketplace using benchmarks that simulate LAN
user activities.
IBM recently commissioned Workstation Laboratories to conduct a file
serving performance test using the industry standard file server
benchmark *NetBench (owned by Ziff-Davis). The Workstation
Laboratories tests comparing Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 and IBM
OS/2 Warp Server showed that OS/2 Warp Server file and application
sharing was better than NT 4.0 on the uni-processor and
better-to-equivalent on the multi-processor version when running
NetBench 4.01 from Windows 95 clients.
For more information on this topic, see the complete white paper at
http://www.software.ibm.com/os/warp/performance/wslcomp.htm. The
paper also includes an appendix with performance comparisons for
loading shared Windows 95 applications from OS/2 Warp Server 4.0 and
NT Server 4.0. OS/2 Warp Server performed equal or better in all
nine test cases.
New OS/2 Warp Campaign
IBM is launching a worldwide OS/2 Warp campaign centered on natural
transformations. The unique and creative web page as well as the
other campaign elements show how companies can leverage current OS/2
Warp investments to take advantage of today's network computing
opportunities. Visit the vision site at:
http://www.software.ibm.com/os/warp/vision/index.html and make sure to sign up
to get the hard copy brochure.
Industry Press Points
Wall Street Journal: August 8, 1997, The Battle Beyond Apple by
George Gilder
The article ends with a prophesy from Mr. Gilder. "If Microsoft
decides to fight this shift to the future by thwarting the necessary
move toward Internet-based computing, it will shrink the industry
even if it expands its own power in it. But if Microsoft turns away
from the TV temptation and devotes its full resources to fulfilling
the Java promise, its margins may be lower than today. Ultimately,
however, even Microsoft's overall profits will be greater in a global
software economy based on the Internet as its new central nervous
system."

of Somers, N.Y., is that IBM is about to formally announce its
'Bluebird' operating system, the small-footprint follow-on to Warp

Version 2.6 is a free upgrade for users of the Post Road Mailer, Release
2.5. For users of earlier versions, the upgrade (which can be applied to any
version) can be purchased through this page:
http://www.innoval.com/business.htm. Please use discount number 957996 to
receive the upgrade price of $29.95. The top of the
http://www.innoval.com/pr25.htm web page describes all the changes since
version 2.0.
This release can be downloaded, using a web browser, from:
http://www.tiac.net/innoval/post260.zip (or)
http://www.aescon.com/innoval/post260.zip
If you're upgrading from the Post Road Mailer version 1.99 or later, you
should unzip the package into your existing Post Road Mailer directory.
Otherwise, unzip it into an empty directory. Either way, read the README
file for further instructions.
ADVANTIS USERS: Last week, Advantis (ibm.net) removed the sending capability
(particularly the XTND XMIT command) from all of their POP3 servers.
Fortunately, the Post Road Mailer also supports SMTP send, which ibm.net
continues to support. If your service provider is ibm.net, open the Post
Road Mailer's settings notebook (from the File menu), go to the Protocol
page, and change the "Send" radio button to the SMTP selection and make sure
you have your SMTP server's name filled in.
SPELLGUARD USERS: If you currently have SpellGuard for Post Road, for
version 2.0.13 or earlier of the Post Road Mailer, you will need a
SpellGuard update to work with version 2.6. Do not try to use your old
SpellGuard with the new Post Road Mailer. Please write to prmbeta@ibm.net
for the SpellGuard update (free of charge). If you've been using SpellGuard
for Post Road with the Post Road Mailer version 2.1 or 2.5, then you already
have the correct SpellGuard update.
We have had many inquiries about spell checking for the Post Road Mailer,
and SpellGuard for Post Road is the answer. This is an add-on which
integrates with the Post Road Mailer. Details are available from
http://www.innoval.com/os2inx.htm. The current price of this add-on is
$14.95.

PC Week Article -- Java 1.1
http://www8.zdnet.com/pcweek/news/0804/04ejava.html
Nice story that appeared in PC Week online yesterday about IBM's release of
Java 1.1. One very positive line in the story: "IBM is also among the first
operating system vendors to provide total JDK 1.1 support. Neither Netscape
Communications Corp. nor Microsoft Corp. have fully implemented JDK 1.1"
PC Week, 8/04/97
(by Michael Moeller)
IBM will announce tomorrow the release of JDK 1.1-enabled versions of its
OS/2 Warp 4, OS/2 Warp Server and OS/2 Warp Server SMP operating systems.
The final version of Java Development Kit 1.1 in the different operating

IBM TECHNOLOGY LETS NOVICES BUILD JAVA COMPONENTS IN 90 SECONDS
World of Java is Extended Beyond Professional Developers Circle
SOMERS, N.Y., July 8, 1997 . . . IBM today introduced technology that lets
even non-experienced software developers build JavaBeans**, or Java**
components, in as little as 90 seconds. By expanding the talent pool of Java
developers, the new technologies could put e-business within reach of more
companies.
IBM leads the industry in developing reusable software components, the
building blocks of new "killer applications" that are helping customers
extend their businesses to the Internet and intranets. Components allow
developers to build applications from separate software parts, enabling them
to add and change functionality quickly and at less expense than starting
from scratch.
Today, IBM is making generally available a number of Java technologies,
including Java-based development tools and ready-to-integrate JavaBean
components, and is previewing new "Bean Dipping" technology that allows
enterprises to customize existing JavaBeans by adding new functionality,
such as printing, licensing, purchasing and security. Among the new
technologies are VisualAge for Java*, the first fully integrated Java
development environment, and VisualAge WebRunner*, a subscription-based
toolkit of Java productivity technologies that complement and extend
VisualAge for Java's state-of-the-art development environment.

IBM Java Tools VisualAge for Java (for Windows 95/NT and OS/2) is a core
technology within IBM's Network Computing Framework. Introduced to the
industry last April, IBM's Network Computing Framework is a roadmap for
customers to move their business to the Internet. Utilizing VisualAge for
Java's development environment, businesses can quickly and easily develop
network-enabled business applications that will allow them to reap the
benefits of an expanded customer base. The tools make Java development so
easy, that even inexperienced programmers can build component-based business
applications.

IBM SHIPS DEVELOPER TOOLS FOR BUILDING JAVA SOLUTIONS FOR THE ENTERPRISE
VisualAge for Java and VisualAge WebRunner Speed Development of
High-Performance Applications that Integrate the Web with I/T
SOMERS, N.Y., July 8, 1997 ... Powerful productivity tools for Java**
developers, designed to fully integrate enterprise data with new Web
applications for e-business, are now generally available from IBM. With over
250,000 betas distributed to developers, VisualAge for Java* now debuts as
the industry's first fully integrated development environment for writing,
compiling and testing 100% Pure Java applets, JavaBeans** or applications
for the enterprise.
VisualAge WebRunner*, also available today, is a complementary toolkit of
Java productivity aids offered through a one-year, renewable subscription
service. Each subscription entitles Java developers to receive, throughout
the year, updates of wizards, frameworks, utilities, and other cool
WebRunner technologies to simplify and speed the development of Web
applications.
IBM also announced the preview of Bean Extender, VisualAge WebRunner's
next-generation "bean dipping" technology, through IBM alphaWorks. Bean
dipping technology will enable developers to customize existing JavaBeans by
adding functions such as security, licensing and systems management, without
reprogramming or recompiling code.
VisualAge for Java VisualAge for Java's integrated development environment
of browsers, editors, class libraries and debugging facilities offers an
end-to-end solution for creating "write once, run anywhere" enterprise
applications that are 100% Pure Java. The tool incorporates the VisualAge
family's award-winning visual construction-from-parts technology.
The Professional Edition provides a rapid application development
environment, enabling users to change and incrementally compile application
code quickly and easily throughout the entire development cycle. It also
offers robust version control facilities that help to manage each step of
development.
An Enterprise Edition of VisualAge for Java, to be generally available in
August, will be the industry's first enterprise-aware Java development
environment. It will include Enterprise Access Builders, which will enable
Java clients to connect to existing relational databases such as DB2*,
Oracle and Sybase, transactions and application servers. Resulting Java
programs will automatically connect an enterprise application to the Web, or
a Java client to an enterprise server. A Team Programming Server component
will be automatically shipped to registered licensees of VisualAge for Java
Enterprise late in 1997.
VisualAge WebRunner The VisualAge WebRunner Toolkit, developed by Taligent,
a wholly-owned subsidiary of IBM, is jam packed with aids to boost the
development of client/server applications for the Web. The
subscription-based toolkit provides programmers with a continuous stream of
innovative Java technologies which complement IBM's VisualAge for Java
development environment, as well as non-IBM Java development tools.
Each toolkit includes: * WebRunner Bean Wizard -- allows non-experienced
programmers to build 100% pure JavaBeans in as little as 90 seconds; *
Migration Assistant Tool for ActiveX** to JavaBeans -- converts ActiveX or
OCX controls to skeletal JavaBeans, cutting the conversion time dramatically
and allowing developers to move from desktop technology to e-business. The
Assistant Tool will also be distributed by JavaSoft. * Server Works for Java
-- Java frameworks that provide a consistent Application Programming
Interface (API) across a variety of Web servers and hosts. * Set of
JavaBeans for quick assembly of applications, such as Network Beans for easy
access to the Internet, mail and news.
"Taligent's Java frameworks, supporting ModelView separation, has laid the
foundation for the development of Transact, an industry-leading
point-of-sale application for retailers," said Stephen M. Derbis, director
of software products for Gateway Data Sciences, which designs software
products that solve real problems for customers in retailing and logistics.
Pricing VisualAge for Java Professional Edition is priced at $US99 ($A149)
per user. Window 95/NT and OS/2 versions are contained in the one package.
Annual subscriptions to VisualAge WebRunner are offered at a suggested
retail price of $US149 (no Australian price yet). VisualAge for Java
Professional users can get a one year subscription for one half the retail
price. IBM alphaWorks technology can be previewed at:

Epson Driver from Germany: tips for users
1. for speed of the Epson driver -> put the "spool priority" to about 40 for
SCSI machines and about 4-8 for IDE machines.
2. the update for the driver is also a little bit tricky! You have to do it
very carefully: to be sure that all goes right do the following: -> delete
the complete driver, also the icon. Restart the system and del also the
files of the Epson driver in the ..OS2\DLL\EPSONPRT dir. -> install the
driver from the "original" CD-ROM - choose any modell of printer you like,
but do nothing else! -> now copy the update into the OS2\DLL\EPSONPRT dir.
-> now open the Template folder and drag a new printer icon on the WPS! ->
choose "other printers" and type the OS2\DLL\EPSONPRT dir when asked for the
source! -> now select the correct modell you have!! -> please select all
property dialogs (options -> the upper AND the lower icon of the Epson
ptinter!!!) and "Save" or "Ok" them. -> now after restarting your system it
should work!
3. for the 1440 dpi please see the following: we received some mails from
customers who had problems with printing in 1440dpi on Stylus Color 600, 800
and 1520. We have dicussed this in detail with Epson Deutschland and it
seems that the problem is as follows.
Due to the fact that in all tests here in Germany the printout worked
perfectly in 1440dpi we checked the printers we got for testing - everything
fine. Then we requested some printers from stock and there was a small
problem -> we had some problems with the justification of the black/white
and color print heads! This could be the result of variation of temperature,
caused on the transport. So when printing in this high resolution the
printout looked a little bit strange.
So if you have the problem that in 1440dpi the printout is not ok do the
following: -> install under WinOS/2 the justification tool which comes with
the printer (sorry, that it is Windows, but the developers couldn't write
also this program in time for OS/2 - thanks). Now you can justify the
black/white and the color print heads.
As a result the printout under OS/2 with the OS/2 driver should now work
perfectly.
Thanks and hope that helps. Bye Chris
