I showed my PalmPilot to a friend. He wasn't very impressed. He thought
Libretto, a VHS-casette sized PC was more revolutionary than Pilot. I
told him casette-sized PCs have been around since 286 days. But look
at this, it's shirt-pocket size, has email, telnet.
"But do you have Web Browser?"
Well, no, but the Pilot has full TCP/IP stack, so...
"Libretto has Win95"

Well, I now do have a Pilot Web Browser: World Finder from Dude-San.

MD+F M3 Released

August 25, 1997 - Modular Dreams Incorporated today announces the release of
MD+F Marauder 3 (MD+F M3), their second SX based internet graphics
application for IBM OS/2 Warp.

MD+F Marauder 3 is an image database, search, and browsing tool designed to
handle chaotic image collections which can result by downloading images from
Internet or the World Wide Web. Features of M3 are:

Image Browsers - To examine contents of directories, virtual directories
(catalogs), or other groupings of images.

Image Choosers and Slideshow - To examine and filter images to be kept or
disposed of.

Image Attributes - To assign attributes to images. By assigning attributes
in different catagories, you can make if easier to find specific images when
you have to.

Quick Search - To search your drives or M3's database for images based on
their name.

Comprehensive Search - To search your drives or M3's database for images
based on their name, description, or attributes. You can specify wildcards
as well as logical operations when searching by file name and you may search
for images based on them having a certain attributes, not having a certain
attributes, or being indifferent about it.

Drive Management - To use more meaningful names for drives, such as ZIP:
instead of the DOS drive letter I:.

Media Management - To distinguish storage media from each other. Instead of
using DOS drive names like I: for each Zip diskette, you can assign them
unique names such as ZIPDISK1: or ZIPDISK2:. M3 even lets you search and
browse contents of removable media when not inserted into the drive.

And MD+F M3 has been designed not to interfer with how you handle your image
files. You are fully free to move them around or delete them anyway you
wish. It will learn and upgrade its database to match the changes as it
encounters them.

MD+F M3 also includes other common SX features such as basic image
processing operations, Collapse and Resurrect, and C++ Scripting.

You can get current information about the MD+F M3 from Modular Dreams at
their website located at http://www.modulardreams.com. The website also
contains usage information, screenshots, and a demo version of the product.

MD+F M3 is $A140

Corrections:

sorry, Ian, we meant to run your correction to our last OS/2NV&PRs
right here... unfortunately, due to reasons outside of our control, I
can't access that mssg right now. Ian Morphet was at IBM's stand at
the Internet show, and he had OS/2 running there.
====================================================================
the Australian, Aug 19.:
IBM prepares an NT avalanche. But analysts do not believe Big Blue is
abandoning OS/2. One US IBM reseller, Software Spectrum, was surprised
at IBM's move. Roger King, the reseller's VP of sales & marketing,
said IBM was pushing OS/2 hard and paying lip service to it's plans
for NT.
//I wish I could share his confidence...//

the Australian, Aug 26.:
Windows becomes IBM's business. IBM plans to give it's powerfull
AS400 busness computers an add-on that enables AS400 and new
AS400e to run WinNT apps.
"NT ... from MS, the dominant software maker"
//hmm, I thought IBM was world's largest software maker, though
"largest" is not same as "dominant" ....//

There is no demand for OS/2 apps, and I wish all you people stop keep
asking us:

Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. has asked us to respond to your recent e-mail
regarding IBM's position on continued VoiceType support for OS/2.

IBM's strategies for OS/2 and speech are optimized for different
customer segments. With IBM's recently announced speech products, the
Speech Business Unit is aggressively driving speech into the consumer
market. IBM is committed to making speech an affordable and productive
tool for a wide range of home and small business users.

OS/2 is an ideal platform for medium to large size businesses
interested in network computing solutions. IBM's OS/2 strategy is to
assist our customers in transitioning from a client server model to a
network computing environment with Java serving as the catalyst of
this strategy. It is our intention to design OS/2 as a premier
platform for Java-based computing for our target customers.

At this time it is not in our current development plan to provide OS/2
support for the newly announced IBM ViaVoice Product; however, we are
constantly monitoring and evaluating all our customers needs and
requirements. As customer needs dictate, we will re-assess the need
for future OS/2 support of ViaVoice.

Thank you for expressing your interest in our continued development of
Speech for OS/2. We are interested in receiving your comments and will
take them into consideration as we plan our future enhancements and
releases to OS/2.

Sincerely,

When will the OS/2 version be available?

Will we be able to buy it, or will it only be available to the very
select few of your customers who have been able to buy your updates
program (whatever it is called -- you know, the one that you cannot
buy and certainly was not an available option at the time I purchased
OS/2).

I know you really don't like doing business with anyone who buys less
that a hundred thousand copies of OS/2 at once, but their *IS* a few
million of us out here.

In short, is it your recommendation that I/we return OS/2 for a refund
and buy Windows NT since IBM software is ONLY available for NT and
cannot be obtained even with a Mack truck full of gold bullion by OS/2
users (IBM customers)?

With that sort of attitude, I am sure you will find quite quickly that
you have no customers left!

Warp Server on Warp V4.0 Announcement

In response to our customer requests, IBM PSP is providing support for Warp
Server on Warp V4.0 (AKA Merlin). Many of our Banking clientele as well as
other corporate clients, often find the that their end users are needing to
use the on-site server as a functional client. This presented a problem for
those users who found they needed to know 2 types of client interfaces to
accomplish their work. By supporting Warp Server on Warp V4.0, PSP is
solving this customer issue, so our customers can now work with a singular
client interface. Some positive selling points for this environment are:
less education expenses with the same Workplace Shell being used for the
server as well as the clients, a singular OS for servicing, and limited
testing requirements for clients and servers running the same OS. These
should enhance the opportunity for the sales rep when such customer needs
are evident.

Though this offer requires the customer to purchase two licenses, one for
Warp V4.0 and the second for Warp Server, either Entry or Advanced, our
feedback shows that this is a minimal cost for the gained customer benefit.

Server performance is expected to be the same as Warp Server on Warp V3.0
either Entry or Advanced.

The primary limitation is that Warp Server SMP is not supported as the Warp
V4.0 kernel is a single processor kernel. Additionally two other features
not supported, due to not being tested are, Local Security and PSF/2
(Advanced Print Services). Warp Server on Warp V4.0 offers the following
support at this time: - File and Print Services - User Profile Management
- HPFS386 (Advanced only) - TCP/IP Apps (Protocol drivers come from MPTS in
Merlin) - Remote Access Server (LAN Distance) - PSnS without Disaster
Recovery (note that there is a workaround) - TME10 (which comes from a
current promotional offer) - Supported on available National Language
Versions

The following are the three known problems: 1. CACHE386 - The driver is not
automatically added to the CONFIG.SYS, therefore the File and Print Server
does not start. Solution - Edit the CONFIG.SYS and add the following
statement: "RUN=X:\IBMLAN\NETPROG\CACHE386.EXE" where 'X:' is the drive
where Warp Server is installed.

2. LAN Server Management Tools (LSMT) V2.03 - You can't restore the USER.
The SETUSER.CMD asks for passwords. Solution - First you must change the
GETUSERS.CMD. Bring it up in an OS/2 editor and at column 59, replace the "
**** " with " ABCD ". ABCD then becomes the new temporary password that is
used.

3. NetFinity Server V4.0 - You can't install the NLV of NetFinity Server
V4.0 that ships with Warp Server SMP Solution - Don't use the Warp Server
SMP version of Netfinity Server V4.0. Use the now available stand-alone
version of NetFinity Server V4.0 that is separately available. Note
fulfillment below. Fulfillment - AP countries have been instructed to
include a copy of NetFinity Server for OS/2 Version 4 with customer orders
for OS/2 Warp Server, OS/2 Warp Server Advanced, and OS/2 Warp Server First
Step.

There are gained technical benefits such as MPTS and the TCP/IP stack from
Warp V4.0 that will be utilized. This creates the possibility for Warp
Server to take advantage of using aliases, which means you can put multiple
IP addresses on a single adapter, as well as other advantages.

Our plans don't include a broad formal product announcement. This is
strictly intended to provide the sales reps an alternative, if the customer
will not/can not accept the standard product offerings.

In addition, any components not listed above haven't been formally tested
and therefore PSP assumes no responsibility for support. There are no plans
for SMP support. The sales reps must advise their customers of the special
nature of this offering, the degree of risk and of any known technical
limitations.

Support for the above environment is through normal support channels. Base
OS fixpaks are supported as well as Warp Server component fixpaks. PSP
Austin will be ready to begin support for this environment on September 1,
1997.

The ITSO has completed the white paper "cookbook" , which will not be
available through Mechanicsburg. PSP will provide the Softcopy of this
"cookbook" to the geography sales reps. It is expected that the geography
sales reps will distribute this to the individual countries for local
hardcopy printing. These "cookbooks' should be given to customers to assist
them in getting this environment up and running.

The recently announced PSP Rapid Deployment Team (RDT) is available to
assist customers with a wide range of services for this environment. The RDT
offers customized services in the areas of planning, application
development, integration, testing, piloting and deployment. Using the
services of the team saves customers time and money during the upgrade
process.

All Q&A's should be directed through the geography sales reps who will
interface with the Lab.

Domino.merchant on OS/2

If you plan to run Domino.Merchant on OS/2, here are a few tips
kindly provided by Lotus:

Taxware is not currently available for use with Domino.Merchant for
OS/2. When completing the Merchant Configuration profile, select
None for Tax Calculation. You may also want to select Other for
Financial Processor and provide an offline payment method so that
you can add tax manually. For information on the availability
of Taxware for OS/2, check the company's Web site at
http://www.taxware.com.

CyberCash Inc. does not currently provide an OS/2-compatible
version of CyberCash. When completing the Merchant Configuration
profile, select Other for Financial Processor, and provide an
offline payment method. For information on the availability of
CyberCash for OS/2, check the company's Web site at
http://www.cybercash.com.

In Merchant 1.1 for OS/2, if you specify fewer than three
shipping options in the Shipping Table on the Merchant
Configuration profile, the shipping options will not appear
on the Shipping Information page (in the Order Processing area)
when placing an order. Shipping options are correctly displayed
only if you specify three or more shipping options. (!!)

Using the finished site

Netscape Navigator 2.02 for OS/2
Domino.Merchant 1.1 does not support using Netscape Navigator for OS/2
version 2.02 or below to run SiteCreator from the Web, but the browser
can be used to shop at the site. In addition, the latest release of
version 2.02 (dated 03/31/97 or later) can be used to manage site
content. (The current version of this browser does not support
uploading files from the Contributor's Menu -- future versions may
support file upload). You can download the latest version from
http://www.austin.ibm.com/pspinfo/netscape.

IBM WebExplorer
Domino.Merchant 1.1 does not support using the IBM WebExplorer to run
SiteCreator from the Web, but the browser can be used to manage site
content and to shop at the site. The current version of this browser
does not support uploading files from the Contributor's Menu --
future versions may support file upload.

??!?!!!

------

If I were OS/2 product manager, I'd be pissed off at getting
these low-quality, crippled ports. Can't "Mr. Lotus" go to
"Mr. CyberCash" and tell them "hey, we'd need you to port
your stuff to all our supported platforms, and that includes
OS/2"?

OK OK OK, I will stop picking on poor Lotus and their amazing
OS/2 support for a while before someone starts acussing me of
having something personal against them. ;-)

Attribute Manager Version 0.71.62
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Attribute Manager (previously Comment Manager) is now in beta version
0.71.62

What is new with this release
=============================
- Bug correction: the program entered an endless loop when
no %TMP% or %TEMP% directory was specified in the config.sys
file or if the path specified was invalid.
- Modified pop-up menu code. Now it will work properly
even if the mouse buttons have been swapped.
- Modified bubble help. Help window will be shown as
soon as mouse is moved over a button. Bubble help
may be disabled through the preferences notebook
- Modified file list box. Extended selection works
like in folders: when multiple files are selected,
clicking on an already selected file will deselect
all other files.
- The Undo function, in the Edit submenu, now works.
- The buttons in the Save dialog which appears when
the selection of a new file deselect previous selected
files (whose attributes have been modified) now work
as expected. The indexes of previously selected files
are stored in memory and so the previous selection
can be restored when canceling a new selection or
file drop.
- The window title is updated every time a new selection
or double click (according to the user preferences) is
performed.
- When in "nobrowse" mode the window maximize button is
removed since the window height can't be resized.
- Closing the application through the task list or by system
shutdown now is properly managed and a "Save/Discard/Cancel"
dialog is displayed if any attribute has been modified.
- Preferences dialog now uses 8.Helv if it detects OS/2 version
2.xx or 3.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Attribute Manager is a PM application that allows to easily read and edit
file or directory ordinary attributes, extended attributes (.SUBJECT,
.COMMENT and ..KEYPHRASE) and "last changed" date & time.

The application has a small toolbar, with bubble help, for accessing to the
most used functions.

A contextual menu will pop up by clicking with mouse button 2 in any other
portion of the window.

To view/edit a file/directory you can drag it on the program icon, start the
program and select one or more files through the browse windows. Once the
application is started you can select different file or directories by
dragging and dropping them on the application title bar. With few mouse
clicks you can select a bunch of files and set all their date/time stamps or
attributes at the same value, read or convert to .SUBJECT or .COMMENT EAs
file description from 4 DOS - 4 OS/2 description files, from file_id.diz
files in archives or from any other user defined file.

Various options can be set by a preferences notebook and will be stored in
the program INI file.

Report and file search capability will be added in future.

The archive (attmn07a.zip - 60,392 Bytes) is currently in:
ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/attmn07a.zip
if you don't find it there try in
ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/delayed/attmn07a.zip
later it will be moved to:

IBM to Attend Warpstock '97

IBM to attend Warpstock '97

IBM presents long term OS/2(tm) Strategy to OS/2 Faithful

Oklahoma City, August 1, 1997 -- After a meeting with key members of the
OS/2 Warpstock committee last week, representatives of the International
Business Machines Corporation (IBM) agreed to present their long term
strategy for OS/2 at the 1997 OS/2 Warpstock convention. Commonly known as
Warpstock '97, the inaugural event will be held October 25-26, 1997, in
Diamond Bar, California.

James Koerner, manager of IBM's Personal Software Products division, will be
on hand to address the audience and discuss the OS/2 Warp strategy, how
customers can take advantage of Warp to move quickly to network computing,
and why that is good for business.

"I'm pleased to have this opportunity to discuss our direction with this
group. I am looking forward to speaking on OS/2 Warp's strength as an
outstanding 100% pure Java development and deployment environment, Warp
Server's role as a premier internet server, and how Project Bluebird will
put our customers on the road to network computing," said Koerner.

On the show room floor, IBM representatives will demonstrate the latest
developments of Bluebird, code name for the upcoming operating system
solution that is targeted toward the emerging managed PC environment.
Bluebird is intended to help customers start the transition of the OS/2 Warp
family of products to network computing while still protecting their
investments.

An off-floor discussion will also be provided to discuss the positioning of
Project Bluebird.

Warpstock '97 focuses on a segment of the computing market considered
essential to the long term health of OS/2 - the burgeoning small office/home
office (SOHO). "This market is growing faster than any other segment, and it
is more receptive to a marketing message which emphasizes the benefits of
OS/2 - true preemptive multitasking, application crash protection, and rock
solid system operation", Koerner added.

Warpstock 97, a major conference for OS/2 small office/home office (SOHO)
and individual end-users, is an excellent forum for IBM, OS/2 SOHO and
individual users, and OS/2 independent software vendors to align with this
market segment's product requirements and to exchange ideas. The idea of an
"OS/2 love-fest" was conceived as one result of The OS/2 Marketplace, a
highly successful OS/2 vendors conference sponsored by the Phoenix OS/2
Society (POSSI).

Discussion about the event is ongoing on the internet's comp.os.os2.misc
newsgroup, on commerical on-line services, and with centralized discussion
on an Internet maillist. For more information, visit
http://www.warpstock.org and join the Warpstock listserv. To subscribe to
the Warpstock listserv, send an email to warpstock-request@warpstock.org
with no subject and the words "subscribe" in the message body.

Further announcements about Warpstock will be forthcoming as planning for
the event continues. Warpstock '97 is an ALL-VOLUNTEER effort; anyone
committed to promoting OS/2 is invited to sign up and volunteer their time
and skills to make Warpstock '97 a success. Volunteers should join the
listserv to obtain information on available slots.

OS/2 news and rumors web page
Reply-to: stevew@hartnell.cc.ca.us (Steve Wendt)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I recently (within the last week) started an OS/2 news and rumors page. It
is currently located at
http://www.hartnell.cc.ca.us/hacnc/altos/OS2News.html, although at some
point in the future I hope to register a separate domain for it. It is in a
state of almost constant update right now, so comments are welcome and
appreciated. Also, any news and/or rumors that you can provide are greatly
appreciated as well... :)

I started this site since there seemed to be a lack of constant, up-to-date
information on OS/2-related information anywhere. Nick's Gossip Page on the
old WarpCity pages was very timely (despite occasional inaccuracies), and
with the demise and then return of WarpCity with a subscription-only model,
I decided to start my own page.

PM Radio 1.1 for Reveal RA300 radio card
Reply-to: paul.ratcliffe@virgin.net
---------------------------------------------------------------------
PM Radio 1.1 has been released and uploaded to:
ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/pmr11.zip

It's expected that its final resting place will be:
ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/system/drivers/misc/pmr11.zip

PM Radio 1.1 is a device driver and accompanying application for driving the
Reveal RA300 PC radio card. It is designed to operate much like a normal car
radio with pushbutton tuning, station scanning and 20 memory selections. It
also features tuning indication and per memory volume settings.

This version works on OS/2 Warp 3.x and 4.x. Both English and German
executables are included. The documentation is in English only.

Changes from the previous version 1.02 include:
Extensive support for drag/drop colours and fonts
More programmable events
Greater tuning range
Includes a simple command line program for controlling the radio

Seeking contact with senior public service MIS officer supporting OS/2
Reply-To: vbien@ibm.net (Victor Bien)

Would any fairly senior MIS officer in a public service department
(preferably in NSW) managing an OS/2 system be willing to be a
point of referral about the benefits of OS/2? As a computer
consultant I've now come across two government department
situations where the move to Win95 (one an enforced one) is
causing a seriously disruptive problem because existing DOS
software (which Gates calls "legacy software" - what a master
marketeer) can't run without Win95 having to run in degenerate
"DOS compatibility mode". I've mentioned to these people that
OS/2's has a VDM mechanism which doesn't get them into that Win95
bind and their computer can simultaneously network to the
departmental servers for e-mail etc. The difficulty is that, as
you would expect, I'm seen as just a talking head. They have not
heard of any other source of information to corroborate what I
say. So if I can refer them to one or preferably more senior
officers in departments that runs OS/2 this may convince them to
use OS/2 than staying with Win95.

TIA
Victor Bien

Hethmon Brothers to Sponsor Saturday Night Blues

Knoxville, Tennessee, August 15, 1997 -- Hethmon Brothers, developers of
Internet software for OS/2, have announced plans to sponsor a Saturday night
social event during Warpstock. Stan Ruffo and Martin Pugh, one of the
hottest acts on the national blues circuit, will perform for an enthusiastic
Warpstock crowd on October 25.

"We're pleased to offer the Warpstock attendees something to relax to after
an intense day of seminars," said Paul Hethmon, principal partner. "We've
already committed to attending Warpstock as an exhibitor but wanted to give
the OS/2 community something back as our way of saying thanks. Not to
mention we're pretty big blues fans ourselves. Stan and Martin's music is
great and the fact they are big OS/2 fans and use an OS/2 laptop during the
shows didn't hurt a bit."

Stan and Martin's music has been described as blues, but includes strains of
swing, rock & roll, rockabilly, jazz, and Latin. It all adds up into some
fresh and exciting music for OS/2 lovers.

"Martin & I are quite honored to be playing at Warpstock - we're blues
players who use OS/2 in our live shows, so it's a perfect fit. We're
thrilled to not only be playing the music we love, but it's also a chance to
showcase another exciting use for an amazing Operating System," said Stan
Ruffo.

More information about Stan Ruffo and Martin Pugh may be found through their
web site at www.ruffo.com.

Warpstock is a conference for OS/2 users organized by OS/2 ISV's,
consultants, and users. Complete details are available at the Warpstock
website: http://www.warpstock.org.

Hethmon Brothers, developers of Internet software since 1994, are located at

Stardock Releases Entrepreneur Demo
Windows 95/NT & OS/2 users get first glimpse of the most ruthless
strategy game ever!

Canton MI -- Stardock Systems is announcing the release of the demo
version of their new real-time PC strategy game, Entrepreneur. This
exciting new game brings the world of business and war games together
with a new real-time, multi-player Internet game that encourages to
play a take no prisoners approach to conquer the corporate market.

GAME BACKGROUND

Entrepreneur is a real-time multiplayer strategy game set in the real
world of business. It is not a business simulator. Nor is it a
shoot-em-up game. In essence, the idea behind Entrepreneur is that
every day, corporate CEOs as Microsoft, Apple, IBM, Fox, TBS, etc. are
all waging all out war on each other. But why should only the CEOs at
billion dollar companies get to play this game? Now everyone can try
to crush their enemies!

In Entrepreneur, you start a company and choose a market to conquer.
The game will ship with the computer market and other markets will
become available after release via Stardock or third parties through
what we call "Dynamic Industry Modules" (DIMs). Once you are in, you
must order your sales executives (who act as generals who get your
products onto the shelves) to different parts of the world where they
compete with the sales executives of other companies for the market
leadership of the region they are positioned in and the surrounding
regions.

Each region has different desires and through research and development,
you must try to engineer your products to meet their demands. However,
different parts of the world have very different demands. For example,
you may dominate North America through your leadership in reliability
but the buyers in Europe may demand performance and thus you may be a
minor player there to companies who are ahead of you in that area.

To offset this, you can create marketing campaigns which act as
commando units. They increase the perceived value of a target trait in
the regions that are positioned in. So even though you may be behind
in a given trait, throw enough marketing resources at it and you can
make the public perceive you as having the better product. And there's
no shortage of marketing campaigns to choose from: Fear, Uncertainty
and Doubt (FUD) all the way up to full scale TV campaigns.

On top of all this, certain regions have special resources. If you are
the market leader, you have control over that resource. The resources
range from political to scientific. If you have enough of these
resources, you can use one of the "Direct Action Cards" that you
receive at the beginning of each game year. Direct Action Cards are
the great equalizer of Entrepreneur and their powers can vary between
insignificant to clinching the game. Have enough political resources?
Then you can use your clout with the government to shut out a
competitor from a target region. Hold enough labor resources? Lure
away an enemy sales executive or incite a labor strike at a target
region. There's many dozens of cards in Entrepreneur to choose from
and they really do stir things up.

The game is won when you have achieved a basic monopoly share of the
market (you don't necessarily drive your opponents out of business but
keep them around for anti-trust purposes -- like say giving them $200
million to keep them afloat...).

SDS/AI: While many games that have multiplayer support have poor AI,
Stardock takes its computer players seriously. The AI in Entrepreneur
was developed by the same team that created the AI for Galactic
Civilizations (the 1995 game of
the year from the Internet Top 100). Each computer player has a unique
personality (i.e. not just some different variable settings, they are
actually coded differently) so that one computer player that makes a
mistake
may not be found in a different one. And while the demo version AI is
toned
down some, it is still extremely challenging.
STARDOCK.NET: Multiplayer play is pretty much expected today and
Entrepreneur may have the best performing internet performance of any
game currently available. You can play people from around the world
and Entrepreneur can handle latency times as great as 5 seconds or more
without missing a beat (most games can't handle more than .5 seconds).
With STARDOCK.NET, you can visit other players in a chat forum right
from within the game and join their games easily -- no searching around
for someone to play.

Another unique feature to STARDOCK.NET is its hall of fame. The top
100 scores are kept track of on it so you can get an idea of who is the
best at it. Imagine Quakeworld or Battle.net where you can keep track
of number of "frags" and thus be recognized for your...business savvy.

While some people may be turned off by the game being set in the
"business world", rest assured, the game setting detracts nothing from
the gameplay itself. The unique game mechanics of Entrepreneur really
show off what a strategy game designed from scratch to be real-time can
be like.

"Plays a lot like Capitialism Plus but with Masters of Orion game play!
It's awesome!" -Pierre Rhit (pr1083@rs-nom.com)
