Happy and safe Easter to all !
As well as Easter, it's OS/2 10th birthday - but it seems only IBM France
is celebrating the 10th anniversary.
Last week, when asked his plans for OS/2 10th birthday, IBM's OS/2 brand
manager said:
" "
I guess we should have organized a virtual party ?
I am off to Thredbo for the Easter weekend. If I can't find an RJ-11
socket, this will be mailed late, sorry. I no longer have an analogue
cellular modem, and my new digital phone will not work with my standard
modem, the analogue did. When I get a modem for the digital phone, it'll do
max. 9,600. Analogue did 14,400. I am glad telecommunications is moving
forward.
Whilst on the subject of modems and progress, are the new 56K the modems to
get ? Maybe not really:
1. 56K modems can only _download_ information at speeds up to 56,000bps.
Uploads will only go as fast as 33,600bps. - hey, that's almost like the
Viatel's 1200/75 trick...... (anyone remembers Viatel ?)
2. In order to achieve a connection using the K56flex or x2 protocol, the
site that you are calling must have digital phone lines and digital
equipment supporting the same protocol as your modem. This will generally
only be the case with Internet Service Providers (ISP's), large online
services and some company dial in servers. In short, you cannot call you
buddy down the street and connect at anything above V.34 speeds (i.e. 33.6
maximum).
3. 56K and 2x are new and evolving technologies. Both you, your modem and
your ISP will want to stay on top of any news pertaining to firmware (i.e.
ROM) upgrades for your equipment.
//If Gareth can rip off stories from newspapers, and Helen
Demidenko-Darville can rip off articles from Internet, surely no-one will
complain about above 3 paras I took from a modem manufacturers' web site ?
Or should I just acknowledged Supra as the source ?//
It was a leisurely drive to Snowy Mountains sitting at just around 2000
rpm. I got 700km on a tankful instead of 400km I get around the city.
Talking about RPM, what RPM does your hard drive spin at ? They used to
spin at around 3,600rpm, then they went to 5,400 and the super-duper
hi-performance drives would do 7,200rpm. Well, the just announced Seagate
Cheetah spins at 10,000rpm.
Talking about hard drives, in Warp4 there is a hard drive utility/tool Hard
File Monitor based on IBM's predictive failure analysis, if your drive has
that technology in it's firmware, this tool will advise you impending hard
disk failure, so they say.
Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (SMART) is the
technology used by the Hard Disk Drive Monitor program to monitor physical
drive parameters, such as soft error rates, to predict failure of hard disk
drives. Receiving a warning of a potential drive failure allows you the
opportunity to back up software and data to prevent a possible loss.
One of our readers had a brand new drive with that feature, however, after
installing the drive, and running the utility, it told him his drive was
about to crash. He decided the utility was not that good, maybe. Two weeks
later, the drive crashed....... As I am looking at a new hard drive,
somehow I think I'll look for a drive with the predictive failure analysis.
That reminds me, anyone remember the Disk Technician ? That was on of the
first products that claimed it had similar technology. And I believed it
did - at least till I met they guys who produced it. Maybe DT did work, but
these guys would put snake oil salespersons to shame. Apparently DT is out
again, this time as DT for NT.
Last month we sold a few Aptivas, they represent a rather good deal for the
money, and for just $200 extra, you can have 15" monitor. When unpacked,
the 15" monitor looked about as large as the normal 14" monitors we use in
the office. Do they use different inch rulers at Wangaratta, maybe ?
We recently plugged an additional printer on our Warp Server - and I was
quite surprised when the client workstation notified the users: "there is a
new printer, and you need this printer driver if you wish to use it".
We have landed some slimline Toshiba XM-4101BME CD ROM SCSI-2 drives, these
are brand new, the were made for IBM (IBM #06H5055, FRU 06H2150), yes,
these are only 2x speed, but at $95 I think they're OK. And, as they are
SCSI, you can daisy chain 7 on a controller and have a CD-ROM server....
Moss Scanning in Victoria have released their new non-contact, 3D Scanning
Systems.
This system was developed at Monash Uni, and Moss are aiming at exporting
this worldwide. They needed a high-performance, high-reliability platform,
so they wrote it on OS/2. In case you think you'd love to have one, they
starts at $75,000 - though they can come to you and scan for you for
somewhat less, I'd imagine. Output data is exported in universally
compatible XYZ cloud point formats, and, needless to say, there can be a
lot of data, so they output it to a CD-R. We supplied them with Sony CD-R
and Unite CDMaker.
CD "burning" is another area where OS/2 software is far ahead of anything
else. Though setting up SCSI devices can be a lot harder than making CDs ,
as our recent experiences proved. A customer requested an external CD
recorder that was to be used connected to an Adaptec 2940UW. UW stands for
ultra wide, and the wide part of it signifies 16 bit SCSI that uses
sixty-eighth pin connectors. Adaptec controllers have always been supported
" out-of-the-box" in OS/2 , and as we Use Adaptec controllers , we didn't
see any problems . famous last words .
We replaced our 2940 not UW with a 2940UW , and the system worked perfectly
, both hard drives , tape unit , CD ROM as well as the external scanner .
So we substituted the scanner with the CD recorder , however the PC would
lock up at BIOS scan . Replacing 2940 UW with 'plain' 2940 made everything
worked perfect . We were blaming the 68 pin high density connector however
it worked fine with the scanner. as I foolishly was testing this on my own
system , with all the lock-ups I eventually managed to corrupt my Desktop
and or ini files , totally destroying my system, (thanks to my own
stupidity I might add.)
I have made several backups to tape . then I realized Whilst I did have
tape backup, I did not prepare the floppy start up diskettes with tape
support. . . . Luckily, as well as tape backups I have also made a zip
backup on another partition, so I quickly re-formatted the boot partition
and unzipped the operating system.
AS we going to press, we are waiting for (more) SCSI cables, directly from
Adaptec. The last lot was specified as Adaptec own cable as well, but it
seems they weren't. to be continued.....
Recognita OCR - I have said in the past it's column-recognition doesNOT
work..... Well, it DOES, I was incorrect. The OCR output windows does NOT
show columns, BUT the saved file has the columns OK.
How to succeed without really trying: In Publishing Essentials' Australian
Impact Awards, MS Internet Explorer wins the "Browser of the Year" as "it's
the first to integrate ActiveX" and "because it is a Microsoft product".
In the euphoria of that moment, the category was called "BROUSER" -Hmm,
wonder what they recommend for a spell checker ?
But isn't this the same IE that Microsoft apparently issued an apolgy to
it's users ?
MS made an IE fix available for a free download - beats my why they just
don't reelase it as a new version and charge an upgrade fee for it, it
always worked in the past..... Does Bill know they giving bug fixes for
free ?
Reader's queries:

LOW END SCANNING IN OS/2
Is there any way to get a TWAIN compliant device to work in a WIN-OS
session?
I've just had to spend an unpleasant 2 hours in Window 3.11 scanning with
my hand held Logitech Scanman. There must be a better way! My scanning
needs aren't really sufficient to warrant getting an HP flatbed.
What are the Low end options for OS/2 scanning?
BTW The templates radio button has vanished from the General settings page
of all my Plain Text objects (document icons). Any clues? I've tried
WPTools 1.9 Checkini. No luck.

Some Logitech scanners are supported with Applause directly, but some use
VXD, thus will not work under WinOS2. The sanner must have a TWAIN for OS/2
support before it will work with OS/2. I don't have (anymore) much
experience with them , maybe some readers can suggest something ?
Also, check STI web page http://www.gate.net/~stidev for latest on Twain for
OS/2 supported scanners.

Just curious about updates to Unite CD-Maker. I understand that there
is at least a v2.1c update but it also appears that there may even be a
v3.0 out now (I have v2.1a). Do you have any information regarding what
changes are in the updates (what is this the latest)?

The current version 3 CDMaker includes: OS/2 CD Maker ver 2.1c as well as
Win95/NT CD Maker 3. CDMaker 2.1 b and c include additional CD-R drive
support only.

WHY MICROSOFT'S IE 4.0 WILL SLOW COMPUTING'S PROGRESS
Even so, Microsoft's new browser will slow the progress of personal

(the follow on to Windows 95) because IE 4.0 isn't ready yet. Get used to
it. Can't release the browser until the OS is finished. Can't release the

BETA: RXDbase 0.84
Some years ago I have developed some database functions for REXX. In 1996 I
did start looking into NetRexx and Java programming as a part of my job; one
of the first things done in the process of mastering those languages was the
porting of my database.
not dumb database.
MaxBase is a database front end written in NetRexx (a language that gets
translated into Java code) that exploits RXDbase, my db library (which is
also
written in NetRexx). Anyone can use it, provided that they have a decent

OS/2 stand-alone application by executing the runme.cmd command that comes
with the package, and it even has an icon. Speed isn't bad either.

functions by means of plugins: by writing a very few lines of code you can
add
features to the database frontend without touching the main MaxBase program;
as an example, the provided plugin which shows on screen images and text
taking their file names from the database is only some 3k in size (source

with many comments). By writing a plugin you create a program that can be

to
prevent someone deleting the db) to the end user without having to modify

MaxBase sources.
The app is still in beta (but I call it this way only because I am open on
adding features - the app 'per se' is finished and working pretty well), and

included in the package.

IBM Working with CERA Bank to Develop Internet Banking Solutions
completed by its newly established Network Computing Projects business
unit.
Working side-by-side with CERA Bank, one of the largest banks in Belgium,
IBM
has developed a Java**-based mortgage loan calculator applet. This is the
initial Java-based offering of the bank's CERA Online service, which offers
retail banking products to clients via the Internet. CERA Bank is the first
bank in Belgium, and one of the first European banks, to offer its clients
access to critical banking information and services over the Internet.
working hand-in-hand with its OS/2* Warp customers to co-develop network

director of worldwide technical projects for IBM Personal Software Products
and head of the Network Computing Projects business unit. "A team of our
top
developers have been working with CERA Bank to find ways to deliver their
banking products via the world of network computing. At the same time we're
protecting their investments in OS/2 Warp, reducing their cost of ownership
and taking advantage of new initiatives such as 100 percent pure Java."
advantages of the network computing model versus the traditional
client/server computing model. Now in addition to delivering services over
the Internet, the bank is investigating the transition to a network
computing
model throughout their enterprise. The project also reinforced the bank's
commitment to OS/2 Warp and they plan to grow the number of OS/2 Warp
clients
and servers that currently make up 100 percent of their branch offices'
computing environment.

calculations, without having to redistribute or reproduce the software and

A add on tool bar for word Pro for OS/2 has been created by the kind folks
from the Lotus L-Team Volunteers on Compuserve. This tool bar adds some
nice
features such as the ability to add curly quotes, single quotes, change
Envelope SmartMasters on the fly, Change the screen background color to an
off
white and back again, add Copyright symbols and some others. It includes
icons and tool bar that you can just copy to the proper directory and go for
it.
