OS/2 News, Views and PRs 2-6-97
Our last edition of "OS/2 News, Views and PRs 29-5-97" got lost partially
in CyberSpace (or maybe either IBM's or OzEmail's SMTP gatway would be more
acurate). If you didn't get it, send 'resend 29-5-97", thanks.

IBM would like more visibility for one of the most popular Internet web
platforms, OS/2 Warp. And, as web sites grow, often they move to the powerful

serving with OS/2 Warp.
eligible for a no-charge copy of IBM's OS/2 Warp Connect Version 3 with a
special web kit. This OS/2 Warp Connect Web Kit consists of:
- Instructions for downloading IBM's Internet Connection Server for OS/2 Warp
- Recommended fixes, tips, and additional instructions
- OS/2 Warp "banner" logo on diskette
-----------------------------
So what's the catch? IBM would like you to set up your own web server on
your own PC. This web server can be on the public Internet or on a private
company intranet (with at least 200 users). Your web server should be
online within 120 days of receiving the OS/2 Warp Connect Web Kit. Your web
server's "point of entry" (homepage) should include the OS/2 Warp logo (and
link to the IBM OS/2 Warp homepage) for not less than 12 months. You may
use any web server software for OS/2 Warp, such as IBM's Internet
Connection Server, IBM GoServe, Lotus Domino, Apache, etc. Finally, if your
web server is on the public Internet, you must list your new site with one
or more of the major Internet lookup services (IBM Infomarket, Yahoo,
Lycos, Altavista, etc). If you cannot meet these terms, and you have
received the OS/2 Warp Connect Web Kit, you agree to purchase one OS/2 Warp
Version 4 upgrade license from IBM or your favorite IBM software reseller.
(The OS/2 Warp Connect Web Kit is available only to residents of North
America. Only one OS/2 Warp Connect Web Kit will be sent per company,
shipping address, or individual. The Kit is non returnable, but it can be
transferred.)
------------
In return, there is no charge for the OS/2 Warp Connect Web Kit. Also, you
may choose to have your new web site judged. The top three winners, as
judged by IBM, will receive a prize package of popular software titles,
including IBM OS/2 Warp Version 4, IBM Antivirus for OS/2 Warp, and IBM
VisualAge Java for OS/2 Warp. Winners will be judged according to
creativity, usefulness and quality of content, use of open Internet
standards (including Java), and integration with existing technologies. Web
sites already using OS/2 Warp, anywhere in the world, are eligible to be
judged. Judging is open only to public Internet sites. Decisions of the
judges are final. Winners will be notified by Internet e-mail. IBM may
publicize the Internet addresses of all entrants. Judging will take place
approximately 120 days after the OS/2 Warp Connect Web Kits are shipped, at
a time and date of IBM's choosing.

meeting is now Tuesday, June 3, 1997. I will have absolutely no time
to get on the newsgroups to make everyone aware of this change.
I would like to ask you guys/gals a HUGE favor.. would you please

has been changed? I am working user group events this weekend
and will not have time to do this until Monday evening, which may
be too late for some. I would sincerely appreciate your help with

Free Delphi VCL upgrade for Virtual Pascal/2 available
======================================================================
Reply- t o : mertner@ibm.net (Allan Mertner)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
fPrint (UK) Ltd have enhanced Virtual Pascal for OS/2 to include most of
the language features found in Borland Delphi v2, and made changes to the
Delphi Visual Component Library source code to allow programs written using
Delphi under Windows to be recompiled as native 32-bit OS/2 applications.
The built-in linker automatically converts the 16- or 32-bit Windows
resources to OS/2 format, and none or very few changes are required to make
Delphi programs run in OS/2.
users of VP/2 is available on our FTP site; details are at the bottom of
this mail.
compatibility, we have relied on IBM's Open32/Dapie/DAX library, which
emulates a subset of the Win32 API and - according to IBM - allows
developers to quickly port their Windows applications to OS/2. Regretfully,
the Open32 library as it currently stands (Warp 3 w/FP28) is unstable,
limited in functionality, and very slow. Timing tests suggest that
applications using Open32 are about 5-15 times slower than their native
Windows counterparts.
compatible version of Virtual Pascal for OS/2, and instead release this
archive as a downloadable upgrade to all existing users of VP/2. If you can
find a use for it, at least our work has not all been wasted! The updated
compiler, linker and RTL allows you to recompile your Delphi programs to
OS/2, where they will run as native applications. Or walk, rather.
ExtCtrls, Dialogs, FileCtrl, Grids, Tabs, Mask, Clipbrd, Printers, Outline
and Buttons. The most notable missing unit is CommCtrl, which defines all
the Win32-specific controls - alas, Open32 does not support any of these
and probably will never do so. "Close16" was suggested as a better name by
a beta tester of the package :-)
are most interested to hear about any (compiler) bugs you find, and whether
you actually manage to use it for something useful!

Applet. At the lowest level you have a DB library (written in NetRexx, hence
Java) which comes with its own online manual which you can use to write your
own programs. Then you have a stand-alone non-networked GUI application, a
stand-alone Client/Server version (server can handle two incoming requests at
once for the standard edition, unlimited for the extended edition), and
finally an Applet which can be put on a web page to publish your databases on
the net. The Applet requires the Server running on the machine which hosts the
web server.

used to code MaxBase) was a development tool suited also for general purpose
applications, and that MaxBase could be integrated into the Workplace Shell. I
am quite happy to tell you that both of my goals were met".

applications. To create web-enabled server killer apps, our customers need
tools that interoperate throughout the multiple tiers of the enterprise, and
IBM VisualAge family answers that need," said John Slitz, vice president,
application development marketing, IBM. "VisualAge is a more complete toolset
than anything offered by any other software vendor."
"I continue to be impressed by the level of IBM's serious commitment to
making VisualAge one of the most comprehensive, cross-platform development
environments available on the market today," said Steve McClure, director
of Object Tools Research at IDC. "These latest products allow enterprise
developers to take advantage of state-of-the-art tools and Java to build

was able to develop a new core billing system called the Gas Transportation
System (GTS) in six months. "To say onlookers were skeptical about us
succeeding with this project is an understatement," said Keith Hardin,
director of I/S, Columbia Gas Distribution Companies. "However, we met our
target and developed a system that guarantees fast delivery of accurate
customer bills. We anticipate that the GTS will save the company an
estimated $2.5 million in its first full year of operation. In my book,
that's a success story to be proud of."

HACKSAW Internet Tool for OS/2 from InnoVal
InnoVal Systems Solutions is pleased to announce HACKSAW (TM), a new Internet
tool for everyone who maintains a web site, sends email to mailing lists, or
downloads files.
maintain a web site, you need this tool! Imagine updating your site with a
single command. HACKSAW is a very useful command line tool for people who
want something more than the existing FTP tools. But HACKSAW is much more.
It can retrieve web pages and other web-based files using the HTTP protocol,
or it can retrieve just their headers. It can send email messages to a single
email address or to an entire mailing list through an SMTP server. It can
retrieve, count, and/or delete any or all messages waiting for you on a POP3
mail server.
-------------------
HACKSAW supports the traditional FTP commands such as DIR, RENAME, DELETE,
SEND and GET as well as SITE commands. Additionally, it implements SENDALL
and GETALL which can be used to send or retrieve all the files in the
specified directory. SENDALL and GETALL support wildcard character patterns
such as *.HTM or S*.* and can also work only on files with a date stamp more
recent than a specified one. SYNCHOST and SYNCLOCAL send all the files from
the one location to the other, which exist on the source but not on the
target, or have a later date stamp on the source than the matching file on the
target. SENDALL and SYNCHOST let you specify whether you want the files sent
with uppercase filenames, lowercase filenames, or using the same filenames as
they exist on the local drive. All six of these Send/Get commands can
automatically perform a specified SITE command against the host file(s) after
the file transfer(s)!
----------------------------------------------------------
You can use control files to perform the same or similar FTP function on a
whole list of filename specifications at once, retrieve HTTP-based files,
retrieve mail from multiple POP3 accounts at once, or send mail via SMTP.
configuration (INI) file, or any combination of these without any user
interaction at runtime. This way, it can perform functions during off-peak
hours by means of a task scheduler or alarm program such as InnoVal's
WebSched. (WebSched provides support for the Windows 95 and Windows NT
dialers without waiting for a user to click on a dialog button before
dialing.) An optional batch file or other program running HACKSAW can
determine what HACKSAW did, because HACKSAW returns errorlevel codes to tell
such a program whether it ran into any errors, or how many pieces of mail it
found waiting on a POP3 server, etc.
control file, or the configuration file, it will prompt you for at run time.
So if you like, you can just tell it the main function you want it to execute,
and it will ask you for all the other information it needs to perform that
function, a piece at a time. You can run it that way if you prefer to have
the program remind you of what it needs to know, so you don't have to think of
everything in advance.
------------------------------------------
The OS/2 and Windows 95/NT versions are compiled from the exact same source
code, so the two versions are identical and released concurrently. You can
even share one configuration file between the two versions, if you use both
operating systems.
configurable Spam Filter (or Twit Filter) which will delete unwanted messages
from your POP3 server before your regular email program clutters your mailbox
with them.
