High Performance Compiler for Java (AIX, NT, Win95, OS/2)
Just in case anyone is interested in a native code compiler for the
Java lanuage.
Beta versions can be obtained for OS/2, Win32(NT/95), and AIX.
[12/04/97] - High Performance Compiler for Java
IBM has released a beta version of their High Performance
Compiler for Java for OS/2. The High Performance Compiler for Java
compiles Java bytecode into optimized platform-specific native
(object) code. The resulting code is (generally) significantly faster
than the bytecode executed in a JVM (Java Virtual Machine)/JIT (Just
In Time) environment. The degree of performance improvement depends
upon the application.
This current beta release (technology preview) supports a subset
of the JDK 1.1.1 APIs. Dynamic class loading is not supported. You can
download a copy from AlphaWorks.

InnoVal Promotes Java Lobby
Harrison, New York, January 19, 1998 - InnoVal Systems Solutions
announced that it has launched an advertising campaign to encourage OS/2
users and developers to join the Java Lobby. The Java Lobby is an
advocacy group that represents the needs and concerns of Java developers
and users throughout the world. The organization has approximately
11,000 members.
InnoVal, a major developer of OS/2 software, is asking its own customers
and all OS/2 users to join the Java Lobby. At a recent meeting of OS/2
users in New York City, Dan Porter, InnoVal's president explained, "The
future of OS/2 and many other operating systems is tied to the success
of 'Write Once, Run Anywhere' Java. Microsoft, however, is using its
clout in the market to try to redefine Java in platform-specific ways
that favor Windows, and only Windows. If that happens it will weaken
competing OS's, slow down Java's evolution, and ultimately stifle new
software innovations. It is important that we recognize that and do
something about it. Even if we don't plan to use Java now, we should
support true WORA Java in order to protect our existing platform choices
and software investments. One way to do that is to join the Java
Lobby."
Porter was visiting the New York City OS/2 Users Group to demonstrate
the J Street Mailer, InnoVal's first full-scale 100% pure Java
application. "I wanted you to see how capable Java is," said Porter
following the demonstration. "I also wanted you to see how well Java
performs. You've seen that. Now I want your support in promoting
Java."
InnoVal is purchasing web page banner ads and print advertising targeted
toward OS/2 users. As an incentive for people to join the Java Lobby,
InnoVal is also giving away free software to all members of the Java
Lobby. A sample active banner ad may be found at www.warpcast.com.
InnoVal will release the first beta test version of J Street Mailer on
January 30. Following a two to three month test period, InnoVal intends
to market J Street Mailer as a full function email client and a module
that can be integrated into other Java applications that require email
function.
Further information about J Street Mailer, including a feature list and
screen shot, may be found at InnoVal's web page, www.innoval.com.
Additional information about the Java Lobby may be found at the
organization's web site, www.javalobby.org.

PMView:
=======
PMView is a viewing and editing tool for bitmapped graphics. It provides
support for systems with palette manager and deep color displays. On systems
with palette manager, PMView gives you color animation and its color
optimizing functions make sure that you always get good looking images with
the best colors possible.
PMView also has an easy-to-use slideshow feature that lets you create
slideshows by dragging and dropping files. The slideshow controller gives
you an easy way to control your slideshow while it's running. PMView
supports a variety of file formats, including GIF, TIFF, PhotoCD PRO, and
JPEG. PMView offers broader and faster support for these file formats than
many other programs do, since we wrote all PMView's code for format handling
ourselves, and did a lot of it in hand-optimized assembly. Other unique file
handling features offered by PMView are transparent UU- and XX-decoding,
MIME decoding and file recovery. If PMView cannot recognize a file as a
readable format it will scan the file and try to find a known format within
the file. This lets you for instance read JPEG or GIF files with an unknown
header that other programs refuse to recognize/read. Such files frequently
appear on Internet.
PMView has a unique automatic thumbnailing facility that will create
thumbnails for your images. The thumbnails in the file open dialog make it
possible for you to browse through hundreds of images in minutes. You'll
never again have to load a bunch of images just because you forgot the name
of the one you're looking for.

WHAT'S NEW?
New features have again been added, some of which are intended to make life
easier if you work on a network. Two timers can now be configured to
refresh the drive table and window contents automatically at specified
intervals. This is useful for network users who want to be sure that the
resources displayed are current.
Another added feature is the dynamic display of volume labels whenever the
mouse pointer hovers over a drive button. As well, a hot-key allows for
creating or modifying the volume labels of local drives.
Some more pesky bugs have been ferreted out and eliminated. Read all about
them and other improvements in the "Whatsnew" file contained in the package.

Second "Java for OS/2 and OS/2 for Java" Initiative Announced
J Street Mailer Discussed
Harrison, New York, January 17, 1998, InnoVal Systems Solutions announced
today the second in a series of "Java for OS/2 and OS/2 for Java"
initiatives to promote Java in the OS/2 community and the information
technology community at-large. InnoVal is encouraging all OS/2 users and
developers to join the Java Lobby, an organization the supports and promotes
Java. To encourage people to sign-up, InnoVal is offering free single-user
licenses for its very popular and successful Hacksaw utility to all members
of the Java Lobby. In effect, the license is a "paid up" shareware
registration by virtue of the fact that a person is a member of the
organization. The normal price for individual Hacksaw licenses is $29.95.
Hacksaw, though not yet available as a Java product, is available for both
OS/2 and Windows 95/NT. An excellent review of the product appears in the
December issue of OS/2 e-Zine at http://www.os2ezine.com/v2n12/hacksaw.htm.
More information may be found on InnoVal's home page,
http://www.innoval.com.
"After our very successful demonstration of J Street Mailer in New York City
last Wednesday, I was discussing the Java Lobby and why I think it is an
important organization," said Dan Porter, President of InnoVal Systems
Solutions. "Someone suggested that if I thought that the Java Lobby was so
important, I should give away promotional copies of the mailer to everyone
who joins. I wish I could. J Street Mailer, a 100% pure Java email client,
is going to be a flagship product for us. We expect to be every bit as
successful with our Java mailer as we have been with our best selling Post
Road Mailer for OS/2. What I can do, however, is offer a free single-user
license for Hacksaw to all members of the Java Lobby."
The free single-user license does not extend to commercial use of the
product. Site and quantity license for Hacksaw are available for business
use.
InnoVal unveiled the J Street Mailer at a meeting of the New York City PC
Club's OS/2 SIG on January 14. Dan Porter, InnoVal's president, demonstrated
the product to a packed audience. "I can't recall doing a more successful
demo," said Porter. "The next day, someone posted a message in one of the
newsgroups. It read in part: =91I am here to tell you it will be the best
email program, bar none. I could not believe the features in it. ... you
will need to see it to believe how quick and fast (it was) ... Man it was
impressive and if they could do that I can't wait to see what other
companies will write in Java.' It felt good to read that review from someone
who was there. My gut feel is that everyone in the room felt that
way."Additional information about J Street Mailer may be found on InnoVal's
Home Page. =
The Java Lobby is free. It takes only a minute to register at
http://www.javalobby.org. Members should then go to
http://www.innoval.com/javalobby.htm to obtain a free license for Hacksaw.
"There are almost 11,000 members in the Java Lobby," said Porter. "With a
concerted effort from the OS/2 community, we could easily double that
number." =
The Java Lobby is free. It takes only a minute to register at

BETA: File system within a file (programming)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
We are looking for volunteer programmers to beta test a new development
product. At the moment the Beta test program is limited to the Win32
version. Future versions will include OS/2, Solaris, AIX, Linux, MacOS, and
others. Product release is scheduled for March 2nd, 1998. If you are
interested in participating please download the software at
http://www.simple-sw.com/demo.htm. For complete details about e_Fs please
visit http://www.simple-sw.com/efsinfo.htm.
e_Fs consists of a set of functions that allow a programmer to create a
file, known as the external file system, and then store other files in it
within a hierarchical directory structure similar to that found in most
modern file systems. The external file system grows as the files it contains
grow and as your application creates new files within it. An external file
system file is compatible across all platforms.
Files contained within the external file system are manipulated in exactly
the same way you manipulate normal files using the C Runtime Library except
that you call function efs_open instead of _open and efs_write instead of
_write, and efs_lseek instead of _lseek, etc.

Nota Musica 2.51, new release
---------------------------------------------------------------------
New Release: Nota Musica Version 2.51
---------------------------------------
Johannes Martin Software-Entwicklung announces the new release 2.51 of
the music notation program Nota Musica. The new version comes with many
improvements and new features. The most interesting feature is probably
the new song text editor. Now you can write lyrics to the music you have
composed with Nota Musica. You can also annotate the music with chord
names, for example for guitar players.
Version 2.51 uses MusiXTeX to generate the final printouts and previews.
This provides even better quality than MusicTeX, which was used in the
previous releases.
Some of the other additions are support for drag and drop, integration
of Nota Musica Sequencer for MIDI recording and playback, automatic
calculation of rests, and many more.

General Information on Nota Musica:
-------------------------------------
Nota Musica is a 32 Bit Presentation Manager application to write and print
music pieces. It offers both a text based and a graphical mouse driven
editor. Tools such as transpose and similar facilitate revising and
rearranging your tunes. Although Nota Musica uses its own file format to
store your music pieces appropriately on disk, it also supports the MIDI file
format, which is supported by most major tune editors for DOS, Atari,
Macintosh and Amiga.
Nota Musica creates fine printouts of your pieces, even on 9 pin printers.
Of course it also supports 24 pin, inkjet and laser printers. Printouts
are created using emTeX and MusiXTeX which are included in the commercial
version in an easy to install package. TeX is available for many computer and
operating systems (Unix, Atari, Amiga, Macintosh, etc ...), so Nota Musica's
output can be used for further processing on these machines if required.
You can also import Nota Musica's output into your favorite word processor
to write music related papers and books, for example.
You don't have to know anything about emTeX and MusiXTeX to use Nota Musica.
Nota Musica with the included emTeX and MusiXTeX requires about 10MB of
harddisk space.

January for first shipping to happen. It's got all of the Warpstock stuff
from the website, about half to 2/3 of the presentations. It also has the
latest fixpacks in disk image form and I think I put Java 1.1.1 on it
also for most languages (left on Chinese). It's about 645mb total.
