OS/2 News, Views and PRs 13-3-97

Hello again,
we received several requests:

============================================================================
Ok... so what did happen?
============================================================================
What is the real reason behind the unlamented demise of Gareth "I'm
Wonderful and you're not" Powell? BTW does the SMH have a REAL computer
section? I was under the impression that it was a work experience program
run by some local High SChool kids under the sponsorship of ever lovin'
Microsoft and the careful eye of the Chief Junior Woodchuck Mr W. Gates.

Could you please reprint the true story of Gareth-Protection Fault's
naughty behaviour (the scum).

Yours, as ever,

Dorothy Dix.

//however, a closer scrutiny of the x-mailer headers seemed to indicate
Dorothy was using not her own mail account - Alexander, could I interest you
in a security software to prevent anuthorized usage of your PC when you're
out to lunch ??? //

Ok, Dorothy, Laurie and Bob, here the true and authorized account:
BTW, Dorothy, in case you're wondering how we could find this document so
quickly, it because we index all our hard drives with Search Manager/2 aka
Blood Hound, for more information on SM/2 please see information further
down in this newsletter.

From: Rev Dr Phil Herring
Now It Can Be Told (was Re: What actually happened?)
Date: 28 Nov 1994 07:17:07 GMT

Okay, what happened is this:

It was a dark Monday night. A storm was brewing in the south. A
restless mob of aus.flame.gareth-powell readers had gathered outside
the Fairfax building in Ultimo, and were getting ugly. Torches had
been lit, and their glow flickered on the walls. Softly, the chant
began... "Kill the clown! Kill the clown!" A straw effigy of Bill
Gates was brought out and burned. A wild-haired figure leapt on top of
a nearby car and began to whip the crowd into a frenzy. Meanwhile, the
security guards in the building had gathered at the glass doors, but
were looking fearfully at the angry mob, which was much bigger than it
had been on previous nights. Finally, the mob's anger broke like a
wave, and they smashed through the doors with a roar; the security guards
fled into the building. Up the steps raced the crowd, the smoke from
their torches filling the stairwell.

They found Gareth at his desk, appending his name to some Washington
Post copy, surrounded by mounds of old Microsoft press releases, and
a autographed, semen-stained photograph of Bill Gates. They dragged
him screaming from the building, and he clutched desperately at the photo
of Bill Gates (some say that it was the source of his unnatural powers)
as they beat him repeatedly with rolled-up copies of _The Open Road_.

Outside, they pinned him to the ground, and drove a stake through his
heart, but he merely hissed and spat, and started explaining what SOHO
stood for, so then they shot him with three silver bullets. That
didn't work, either, and by then the crowd knew that Gareth was in
league with Satan, as his head started to spin around, and he repeated
Microsoft press releases from 1987. Some of those present fled
screaming into the night, their minds destroyed by the horrific sight;
others were reduced to crouching in the gutter, sobbing.

Suddenly, in midst of all the chaos, a figure in a glowing white robe
appeared. By his bald head and glasses, those who still had their
sanity recognised Stuart Littlemore, QC, patron saint of the ABC, and
self-proclaimed Defender of the Supercilious Smile. With a gesture, he
bade those present stand aside, strode up to the pinioned Evil One,
and with a righteous smirk, taunted him, and called him a plagiarist.
The Evil One jabbered even more foully, and began to vomit 5.25"
floppy disks, but Saint Stuart was not deterred! He likened him to
Arthur Daley, said he wouldn't work for the ABC again... and that was
the last straw! Gareth Powell's head span faster and faster until it
was a blur, came off, and shot squealing up into the night sky.

Those still watching were amazed - there was no body in the clothes
left on the footpath, just a puddle of some kind of brown liquid that
smelled foul. Then they noticed that Saint Stuart had gone - as always,
he had vanished into the night in silence, taking no thanks other than
the knowledge of a job well done.

And so passed the evil reign of Gareth Powell... some say that on a
dark night, if you listen *very* carefully, you can *just* hear a
Welsh-accented voice explaining what SOHO stands for, and how many
Robert Ludlum novels his modem can transmit per hour...

...or maybe it's just the sound of someone farting in the distance.

Banking

Press Releases

IBM's OS/2 INCREASES MARKETSHARE IN BANKING SECTOR

Dramatic Growth at National and Super regional Level, at Community Banks and in Branch Applications

AUSTIN, TX, July 23, 1996 . . . Over the last two years, IBM's OS/2* operating system has emerged as an industry leader in the retail banking arena, one of the most demanding industrial environments. Twenty of the top 30 U.S. commercial banks have made a significant investment in OS/2 with 19 of those running their branches on OS/2. According to Mentis Corporation, a leading research firm for the banking industry, OS/2 has increased its overall client operating system marketshare among
large banks from nine percent in 1994 to a projected 25 percent in 1996. This compares to only seven percent for Windows NT** in 1994 and a projected nine percent in 1996.

In addition, according to Mentis Corporation, OS/2 has maintained over the past two years approximately one-third of the marketshare in all large U.S. banks for its server operating system, compared to the 13 percent held by Windows NT. Within the community banking sector, OS/2 marketshare for clients and servers has more than tripled, with Windows NT penetration declining dramatically.

As far as branch applications are concerned, IBM estimates that 80 percent of all newly installed Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) worldwide today run on OS/2 platforms and over 80 percent of all banking transactions worldwide today are processed by technology running on OS/2. New OS/2 banking installations and upgrade customers include Comerica Bank, First Union Bank, First Virginia Bank, and Trustmark National Bank. These and other banks are investing in OS/2 because it provides unparallele
d multi-tasking, stability, scalability and flexibility, along with unmatched access to corporate data, corporate applications, and enterprise- wide networks.

OS/2 was designed for the mission-critical business environment, and has reliable protection and manageability built directly into the operating system. The level of satisfaction with OS/2 within the banking community is so strong that some of the world's largest banking organizations are furthering their commitment to OS/2.

"The needs of today's banking industry are increasingly complex and nowhere will you find a more powerful, reliable and feature-rich PC operating system," said John W. Thompson, general manager, IBM Personal Software Products division. "The decision at financial institutions to standardize on OS/2 demonstrates the leadership of the OS/2 Warp family in this critical industry." Banks Look to OS/2 as Operating System of Choice

Comerica Bank, headquartered in Detroit, is one of the nation's largest commercial and small business lenders. With approximately 400 branches in Michigan, California, Texas, Illinois, and Florida, Comerica has some 6,000 workstations and 300 servers. In an effort to make its branch customer service operations run more efficiently, Comerica Bank chose to implement OS/2 Warp and OS/2 Warp Server.

"One of our primary objectives is to make sure we get customers in and out of our branches as quickly as possible while maintaining the highest quality of service in the process," said Ken Milczynski, vice president, Comerica Bank Operations department. "We chose OS/2 Warp for its superior multi-tasking capability, reliability, and ability to easily integrate with our other products. With OS/2 Warp Server, we will be able to maintain our hardware and software inventories on a real-time basis,
as well as to monitor the performance of our servers across branch offices."

In addition, Comerica utilizes BankPro, a teller terminal application for OS/2, developed by Argo Data Resources, based in Dallas. According to Milczynski, the capabilities inherent in BankPro were essential for the bank to be able to continue providing great customer service. BankPro currently runs exclusively on OS/2, and was one of the many reasons Comerica chose IBM.

Trustmark National Bank, a large commercial bank based in Jackson, Miss., chose OS/2 for much the same reasons. With an employee base of about 2,200, the bank has 120 branches, with approximately 150 servers and 625 clients. Since migrating from DOS in 1995, the bank has been running LAN Server 4.0 and OS/2 2.1. Trustmark believed that an upgrade was necessary in order to remain competitive. OS/2 Warp Server and the next version of the OS/2 Warp client, code-named Merlin, created a natural up
grade path.

"For performance, stability and reliability, OS/2 comes out way ahead of Windows," said David Knight, assistant vice president and manager of Client/Server Technical Services. With OS/2 Warp Server, the bank will be able to enjoy "everything we had with LAN Server 4.0 and much more," according to Knight. "It's really going to save resources and time."

The bank chose to implement the next version of OS/2 Warp primarily for the attractive built-in Internet and intranet capabilities. "I am extremely comfortable with the decision we made with OS/2 Warp and OS/2 Warp Server," said Knight. "It's the right way to go."

First Virginia Bank was struggling to keep afloat with 350 servers and 3,500 clients in over 355 branches in Maryland, Virginia and Tennessee, all running on an antiquated 4700 DOS- based system. To remain competitive and still provide great customer service, the bank realized it needed to upgrade its systems and chose OS/2 Warp.

"We are very pleased with OS/2's performance," said John Joback, executive vice president of First Virginia Services, a subsidiary of First Virginia Banks, Inc. "We have seven other supporting products that we use in conjunction with OS/2, and I am very pleased with the way the whole operation has come together. IBM's commitment to OS/2 has made a significant difference for First Virginia. IBM continues to demonstrate that it is committed to helping First Virginia succeed."

First Union Corporation, headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., is the sixth largest bank in the U.S. With an employee base of 45,000 in 2,000 branch offices from Connecticut to Florida, First Union provides a wide range of financial services to both commercial and retail customers.

In 1994, the bank decided to reengineer its commercial lending process, an important component of its commercial customer business. First Union needed a reliable, true multi-tasking operating system to handle the heavy demands of a mission-critical system. It selected OS/2 and has since upgraded to OS/2 Warp, which it currently runs on 6,000 workstations and 2,000 servers bankwide.

"When we reengineered the commercial lending process, we wanted to increase productivity so that banking professionals would spend more time on customer value-added functions," said Patrick McCartney, senior vice president, First Union Corporation. "OS/2 was the only available operating system that would truly support the multi-tasking we demanded. Everyone is most impressed with its flexibility." The OS/2 Warp Family: The Total Business Solution

OS/2 Warp is the foundation for a broad family of scalable products, ranging from OS/2 Warp, Family FunPak for OS/2 Warp, OS/2 Warp Connect, AttachPak for OS/2 Warp Connect, OS/2 Warp Server and the IBM Directory and Security Server, one of IBM's Software Servers. OS/2 Warp provides an ideal client/server solution for customers ranging from the connected consumer to small- and medium-sized businesses and departmental workgroups to the corporate enterprise.

Internet Adventurer v0.96
Reply-to: krasmus@post3.tele.dk (Kim Rasmussen)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The eagerly awaited Internet Adventure version 0.96 has now been released, and
is available for download from <http://home3.inet.tele.dk/krasmus/>

Internet Adventure is OS/2's premier Internet Suite, which supports IRC, WWW,
FTP, Gopher, News and Mail all in one integrated fast and cheap package.

Major new features:
- Netscape/2 support
- Native Java support (running outside of a WWW-browser)
- WAV support !
- Extensive News/Mail filtering
- Crossposted news articles are now handled
- Native language support, and support for all the ISO-8859-x character
sets.
- MIME support added, view attachments easily

Here is the complete list of changes since the last version:

- Flushing of the news database is now only done after no activity has
occurred in 10 seconds. This should make retrieving of articles
faster.
- News database compaction added - this also means that news.p is no
longer needed. Compation can significantly reduce the disk-space
requirements of the news database - during testing, I reduced it from
9 MB to 5 MB by simply compacting it. Compaction is available from
the file menu.
- If you have a registered version, your real name will no longer be
displayed as part of the header in any sent messages.
- Older newsservers, which does not support the XOVER command are now
also supported, note however that the byte count will be 0, since
that information is not available. Also note, that these servers are
slow, and it takes considerably longer time to download from them.
- IA_NETSC.DLL added - This adds support for using Netscape for all
WWW and FTP URLs, instead of the browser in IA_WWW.DLL. In order to
use it, change a line in iaplugins.cfg (ia_www to ia_netsc).
- When deleting the last thread in a newsgroup, the article list was not
cleared properly.
- Whenever a program was started from inetadv, it inherited it's file
handles, thus causing InetAdv to think that the database was opened
by another process after re-loading, without shutting down the
started apps. This is now fixed.
- Huge bug concerning threading fixed ! Whenever deleting an
article list record from the database, it's assotiating thread was
also deleted, even if there were other records in the same thread.
- /URL command added to IRC
- Enhanced the install.cmd script a lot
The .zip file now has no quicklst.* files, but comes with a
orgquick.lst file that the install script imports into the quicklist
database, of no existing quicklist is detected.
- Added impnetsc.cmd, which imports Netscape Navigator's Quicklist
- The newsgroup list didn't remember it's container view
- Custom folders can now be created, and articles/mails can be moved or
copied to them.
- /joininv IRC command added - will join the channel you were last
invited to.
- Private messages will no longer be shown in the current channel, if
a private window is pop'ed up to show the message.
- Bug in copying to the clipboard from an IRC window fixed.
- WAV support added !! The following WAV files are played by InetAdv:
- ialoaded.wav when inetadv is started
- newmail.wav when new mail has arrived
- Added Java support, using IBM's JEmpower tool - the same one that
Netscape is using to support Java inside their browser !
- Changed the name of any runtime DLL's to a unique name, so IA will no
longer conflict with other program DLLs. All IA DLLs now also uses a
single runtime library, to minimize memory requirements.
- Changed the name of exceptq.dll to ia_trap.dll, to avoid conflicts
with PowerWeb which used an older version of exceptq.dll - Help is
finally added - few items are still in the help, but the list is
growing rapidly...
- You can now doubleclick on an email address anywhere, to prepare an
email and send it to that specific address.
- Registration menu item moved to the main menu.
- Filtering now implemented. This is a really useful feature, refer to
the help for details on what can be done with filters.
- Stuffed Xref support into the database
- The IRC notify-list only worked for nicknames of max. 9 chars, this
has now been fixed.
- Right-clicking the IRC nickname list only worked for nicknames less
than 10 characters.
- Timestamp has been removed from all messages that goes to the IRC
log.
- If posting a news article while offline, InetAdv would only try to
send it 3 times, and then give up, and require a restart in order to
try to communicate with the newsserver again.
- 'Mark all read' menuitem added to news.
- True Xref handling added, this means that if you mark one article
read, if it's crossposted, it will also be marked read in all the
other groups that the article also appears in !!!!
- Headers formatted according to RFC1522 (eg. =?iso8859-1?q?=3F?=) are
now translated to a more readable format. Charactersets are also
converted from iso-8859-? where ? is 1-9 to your current codepage.
The following codepages are supported: 437, 850, 852, 857, 860, 861,
863, 865.
- Drag'n dropping URLs from Netscape to Internet Adventurer's quicklist
is now possible.
- MIME is now supported, both MIME attachments, and uuencoded
attachments are shown as one line representing them, instead of
showing the whole attachment in the article window.
The following codepages are recognized: 437, 850, 852, 857, 860, 861,
863 and 865. Conversion between all these codepages and iso-8859-* is
supported. (* is 1 to 9)
- Quoted lines are no longer wrapped, when replying.
- Received duplicate messages are now shown as independent messages in
the inbox - this means that IA's duplicate handling has been disabled
for incoming mail messages.
- MIME and UUDecoding attachment support added

New Java T

FYI OS/2 Community - check it out!:

There are new and varied OS/2 apps coming out especially with Java.
We are trying to see if there is interest in OS/2 version since we
develop in OS/2 and convert to Windows. Much faster way to get a
WINdows program than trying to debug on abuggy system.

Press Release

QVision, Inc. March 4, 1997

info@qvision.net EMail

Q: When will there be another game as fun and challenging as Tetris?
A: Now, Tensor from QVision.

Pit your skills against Tensor. Move the tiles about a rectangular
playing board trying to merge like tiles to score points. The more
tiles you merge the higher you score. But look out, merging
mismatch tiles can cost you points.

At each level of Tensor, you are given a quota of points you must reach
within a time limit if you make the next level. New tiles are added to
the board randomly but if you can clear the board you get a bonus when
you met the quota.

At each higher level your quota gets higher; new tiles are added
faster; new types of tiles may be added; pits, barriers, and null
squares can appear and randomly jump around.

See how many levels you can get through or see how many points you can
rack up before you fail to make the quota.

Played by testers from 5 - with a little help on instructions -
through 70+, Tensor has been enjoyed by our testers of all ages, sexes,
and skills. The 3 highest known scores on Tensor all belong to the
ladies, of which 2 were adults not teenagers - the second highest was by
a 13 year old.

Tensor allows you to vary options to create a new challenging game at
any time. The Java version - which runs on all major Java platforms
such as Windows/95, Windows 3.11 and OS/2 - has even more options to
challenge you.

Demos are available at: http://www.qvision.net/demo.html

Tensor is available in Java, OS/2 and Windows (3.1 or higher) version.
Tensor is available, in all versions, on diskette or for electronic
download over the World Wide Web.

Alternative Movie Database 1.04 for OS/2
Reply-to: siebert@cs.tu-berlin.de (Steffen Siebert)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Released: Alternative Movie Database for OS/2
=============================================

I'm proud to announce the availability of the Alternative Movie Database for
OS/2, Version 1.04.

The Alternative Movie Database is a front-end for the Internet Movie Database
(IMDb) and provides fast and easy local access to the IMDb. It consists of
several command-line tools for creating and querying the database. A more
comfortable way to query the database is the also supplied graphical user
interface for OS/2 Presentation Manager.

The whole package is free software and released under the GNU General Public
License.

I've uploaded the Alternative Movie Database 1.04 as amd1_04a.zip and
amd1_04b.zip to HOBBES.

The most recent version of the Alternative Movie Database can always be found
on the following ftp-servers:

ftp://uiarchive.cso.uiuc.edu/pub/info/imdb/tools/os2/ (USA, main site)
ftp://gatekeeper.digital.com.au/pub/imdb/tools/os2/ (Australia)
ftp://ftp.fu-berlin.de//pub/misc/movies/database/tools/os2/ (Germany)
ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/culture/tv+film/database/tools/os2/ (Finland)
ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/tv+movies/imdb/tools/os2/ (Sweden)

The IMDb Movie-Lists, which are needed for the Alternative Movie Database to
create the database, are also available on these ftp-servers.

For more information on the IMDb, look at it's hompage: http://www.imdb.com

Visit my homepage at http://www.cs.tu-berlin.de/~siebert for information about
other OS/2 programs written by me.

If you have no idea, what the IMDb is, here some facts about it:

The Internet Movie Database is an international organization whose objective
is to provide useful and up to date movie information *freely* available
on-line, across as many systems and platforms as possible. It currently covers
over 65,000 movies with over 900,000 filmography entries and is expanding
continuously.

The database includes filmographies for actors, directors, writers, composers,
cinematographers, editors, production designers, costume designers, producers
and a miscellaneous catch all section; plot summaries; character names; movie
ratings; year of release; running times; movie trivia; quotes; goofs;
soundtracks; personal trivia; alternative names; certificates; color
information; country of production; genres; production companies; sound mix;
reference literature; filming locations; sequel/remake information; release
dates; advertising tag lines; detailed technical data; alternative versions;
laserdisc availability; and Academy Award information.

The database aims to capture any and all information associated with movies
from across the world, starting with the earliest cinema, going through to the
very latest releases and even movies still in production. Many thousands of
movies are covered completely from the major actors to the minor bit players
and crew members. All the information comes from the users of the database so
please continue to support it and help it to grow. The database is updated
weekly and is available over the world wide web, an e-mail interface or for
local installation on Unix, Amiga and MS-DOS machines.

In its five year history the IMDb has grown from a small informal project to a
major Internet resource. The WWW interface to the database is one of the most
popular and well-known sites of any class on the web. It is frequently cited
as a model for how to create and organise a major web site and has received
numerous awards and honours over the years.

Online REXX class postponed, *not* cancelled!
Reply-to: esther@primenet.com (Esther Schindler)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, the REXX class at http://www.zdu.com has been postponed. But it was among
other classes postponed because there wasn't *quite* enough attendance to
warrant it. The sooner you sign up for the class, the sooner it will be
rescheduled.

If you missed the earlier notice about the class: it's a 7-week-long online
class that takes place in a messaging system at ZD's web site. It costs $4.95
(that's right, 5 bucks) a month. The instructors are Bill and Esther
Schindler, who will use their book _Teach Yourself REXX in 21 Days_ as the
textbook. Head over to www.zdu.com to get more info on how the classes work.

Here's the note that will be going out tonight from ZD University.

Dear ZDU Student,

There has been some feedback from the OS/2 community regarding ZDU's decision
to postpone the REXX: Programming for OS/2 class which I'd like to explain
further.

We haven't canceled the OS/2 class. Similar to another course, we decided to
postpone REXX until we have enough students registered to justify the cost of
running it.

If you'd like to be notified when this class is rescheduled, you'll find the
syllabus listed in the "Future Classes" area on the "Course Catalog and
Registration" page (http://www.zdu.com/zdulive/catalog/catalog.htm) on ZDU.

You should choose "Notify Me" to the left of the class description. We'll
email you once the class is rescheduled.

Also, a clarification regarding what browser is required for ZDU. You'll
need Netscape Navigator 2.0.2 for OS/2 Warp in order to participate in ZDU. If
you need to upgrade, your instructor, Esther Schindler has recommended that
you locate the browser directly from IBM's web site at:
http://www.internet.ibm.com/browsers/netscape/warp.

I apologize for any confusion that may have resulted from our earlier notice.

Thanks,
Jennifer Golden

REXX SuperSet/2 Supports Object REXX
Reply-to: fcruz@softouch.com
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Contact: Felix Cruz, REXX SuperSet/2 Product Manager SofTouch Systems, Inc.
405/947-8085 Internet: fcruz@softouch.com Compuserve: 72274,3102
http://www.softouch.com

New version of REXX SuperSet/2 (tm) supports Object REXX for OS/2 (tm)

REXX SuperSet/2 2.0 for OS/2
Oklahoma City, OK -- SofTouch Systems is excited to announce the REXX
SuperSet/2 Version 2.0 is available for general delivery. REXX SuperSet/2 is
SofTouch Systems' first product to support the new Object version of the
popular REXX procedural program included with OS/2.

REXX SuperSet/2 provides the REXX programmer with the most extensive set of
"classic" REXX external functions available from a single source. Over 300
external functions in seven DLLs are registered to the REXX processor supplied
with OS/2. These external functions can be used in TCP/IP, NetBIOS, EHLLAPI,
LANServer and Warpserver and CPIC environments.

REXX SuperSet/2 Version 2.0 supplies new REXX classes to create external
objects. The new classes will create the following objects:

o Named Pipes server and client objects
o TCP/IP sockets server and client objects
o NetBIOS server and client objects
o CPIC server and client objects
o FTP server and client objects
o OS/2 semaphores encapsulated as objects
o OS/2 VIO functions encapsulated as objects

Each of these object packages is supplied as a System Object Model (SOM)
Dynamic Link Library (DLL). Because they are supplied as objects, the
programmer can make full use of them by subclassing and inheriting from them
to create their own Object REXX customized objects.

According to Rick Jones, president and CEO of SofTouch Systems, "The SOM
objects technology in REXX SuperSet/2 allows a greater range of functionality
to be encapsulated and a simpler programming interface to be used. This
reduces the effort needed by the programmer to use and learn the objects and
their interfaces. The result is smaller programs and shorter application
development times," Jones added.

REXX SuperSet/2 improves the programmer's productivity because it organizes
the classic REXX extensions by environment, establishes a consistent function
syntax, and provides examples for every REXX function. A 650 page product
manual describes the functions, their syntax, and lists examples from real
working programs. REXX SuperSet/2 includes an on-line version of the product
documentation as well.

The REXX SuperSet/2 Version 2.0 supports all versions of OS/2 2.x, 3.0, and
Warp 4.0. Object REXX and OS/2 Warp 4.0 are required to use the new REXX
SuperSet/2 object classes.

With this release, SofTouch Systems is dropping the requirement to license
runtime DLLs. According to Jones, "Our customers urged us to drop the runtime
license charge because it was too time consuming to administer and monitor DLL
usage. By dropping the runtime DLL charges, the market's acceptance of REXX
SuperSet/2 will increase significantly," Jones said. "Application developers
will now know in advance how much their REXX development projects will cost
and no longer have to manage the number of runtime licenses used in their
company," he added.

With this release, SofTouch Systems is announcing REXX SuperSet/2 Professional
Edition and REXX SuperSet/2 Personal Edition. REXX SuperSet/2 - Professional
Edition consists of the 300 classic REXX external functions, the classes for
creating new networking objects with Object REXX, and the printed and on-line
documentation.

REXX SuperSet/2 - Personal Edition is a subset of the REXX SuperSet/2
Professional Edition It is intended for the casual user interested in using
REXX for personal use. It includes the complete documentation and examples but
does not include the networking DLLs (TCP/IP, NetBIOS, LAN Server/Warp Server,
CPIC, and EHLLAPI functions) or the new networking Object REXX classes.

REXX SuperSet/2 Professional Edition lists for $249 for a single-user
developer license and $79.95 for the single user license.

SofTouch customers may purchase REXX SuperSet/2 Professional Edition for $199
and REXX SuperSet/2 Personal Edition for $69.00.

Registered REXX SuperSet/2 Version 1.0 customers may upgrade to REXX
SuperSet/2 Professional Edition for $49.00. There is no upgrade to the REXX
SuperSet/2 Personal Edition.

The deadline for upgrading to REXX SuperSet/2 2.0 is May 30, 1997. Anyone
buying REXX SuperSet/2 1.0 between now and May 30, 1997, is eligible to
upgrade to the REXX SuperSet/2 Professional Edition for $49.00, plus shipping
and handling, with valid proof of purchase.

PMMASort 1.0B2 (sorts PMMail address book)
Reply-to: spk@ibm.net.no.spam

Announcing PMMASort v1.0Beta2. -- from Gyan Scott Penrose-Kafka (spk@ibm.net)

PMMASort is a small but needed command-line utility to sort the address book
in PMMail v.1.9. Because PMMail doesn't sort its address database, the popup
address books appear according to the order the addresses were added, which
can be very frustrating. PMMASort quickly will sort through hundreds of
addresses, and put them in order, either by name or by alias, so that they
will appear in the popup according to your desires. PMMASort is available on
HOBBES and CDROM as pmmas10b2.zip (anticipated directory: /os2/internet/mail)

set6x86.exe / get6x86.exe v1.2
Reply-to: kondrasu@xti.com (Greg Kondrasuk)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
FREEWARE: set6x86.exe / get6x86.exe v1.2 for OS/2
=================================================
Copyright (C) 1996 Koen Gadeyne (koen.gadeyne@barco.com)
OS/2 port by Greg Kondrasuk (kondrasu@xit.com), March 1997.

This is a port of the set6x86/get6x86 1.2 program for Linux and DOS done by
Koen Gadeyne. I've changed some of the option flags to get around the
differences between the Linux/gcc and OS/2/gcc/emx implementations of the
getopt function.

This program will allow you to set some of the special registers in the Cyrix
6x86 (and possibly 5x86). Most important is the power-saving feature that
will power down the CPU from its whopping 24W normal state to a 0.3W state
when OS/2 issues a halt instruction. You'll be able to hear the CPU
power-down when idle--there is much less strain on the power supply.

There is no performance penalty associated with the power-down feature.

The file set6x86.zip has been uploaded in the incoming directories of HOBBES,
Walnut Creek, and Leo. The expected placement locations are:

X-File for OS/2
Fm: Michael Shillingfor 104077,3062

!!! X-File for OS/2 !!!

X-File, "The Open File Dialog Fixer", is a desktop enhancer which adds major
enhancements to the standard OS/2 microscopic "open/save as" file dialog.
Nothing paranormal here - just real useful stuff.

X-File runs under OS/2 3.0 or later, is small and non-intrusive, and will
save you from merrily-we-scroll-along syndrome. Works with many apps such as
System Editor and SmallEd - see list below for more. Another must-have X
utility from the company that gave you X-it and Matrix.

List of Features

Replaces the tiny "open/save as" file dialog with a full height dialog
that is user customizable - prevents Carpal Scroll Syndrome by showing
more files and directories.
Drive buttons at the top of every "open/save as" file dialog. Single click
moves you to that drive.
History buttons for last files and directories accessed.
A Frequent Directories button (quicklist) - jump to your favorite
directory in two mouse clicks!
File Viewer button lets you view the current selected file using either
your favorite viewer, or the default WPS viewer for that file object.
File Manager button lets you access the current selected directory using
either your favorite file manager, or the default WPS file manager (folder
is opened).
All of the above functions/buttons are also accessable with a popup menu
(right mouse button or Shift-F10).
Change the fonts for the file and directory lists - use a really small
font to really cram in all those files/directories.
Both the "Drives" and "Type of File" drop down lists are lengthened to fit
the entire list on the screen - no more scrolling here either!

This utility will enhance many existing applications, such as System
Editor(E), Enhanced System Editor (EPM), SmallEd, Mesa/2, Home Page
Publisher, PMMail, BackAgain/2, FM/2, HTML Studio, PhotoGraphics,
Netscape/2, Program Commander/2, Neon Graphics Light, PMJpeg, Adobe Acrobat,
PMuue, Iedit, Initor, PMMpeg, UNZip Shell, Compuserve Information Manager,
Icon Editor, Icon Heaven, WebExplorer, Internet Adventurer, ZOC, GVPM,
HexEdit/2, IniMaint, ISDN Watcher, ZIPme, Visual Age products, Borland
development products, Compare, EquationEditor/2, PMpgp, RexxEdit, Maple V/2,
LogoArt, PMSpy, Pastry Box, OS/2 Multimedia tools (Digital Audio, Video,
etc), PMDMatch, Matrix, Mahjongg and many more.

Templeton 1.900
Reply-to: dr.neal@worldnet.att.net (Neal Krawetz)

Templeton is a powerful World Wide Web mirroring and mapping tool. Using
Templeton, you can bring remote web pages to your local hard drive for fast,
convenient, reliable, off-line use. Mirrored HTML documents include working
links, images, and sounds! Web browsers can easily access the retrieved
files. Minor HTML corrections (such as a missing quote) are performed.
Templeton is very configurable; it can generate web site maps, mailing lists,
server lists, and much more. It can easily be included in automated scripts
or can be used to run other applications on the mirrored files. HTTP proxy
servers and password-protected URLs are supported!

What's new in the latest release?

* Registration payments allowed via BMT Micro (www.bmtmicro.com)
* Corrected retrieval of wildcard-restricted CGI data. For example, "deny
*.gif" would still retrieve "http://machine/cgibin/time.cgi" which
generates a ".gif". Now file is correctly *not* retrieved.
* Revised socket-read function. This corrected one bug under Linux.
* Corrected file timestamp to corrected correspond with daylight-savings
time.
* Updated expiration data to April 15.
* Updated documentation to include new registration fees and method.
* New icons. (The "Home" icon cause some confusion.)
* HTML 3.2 compatible. Supports lowsrc and client-side image mapping
when the image map information is stored in a separate file.

PMfax is a trademark of the Keller Group, the developers of both PMfax and
FaxWorks. FaxWorks OS/2 is a Keller product published by Village Idiots,
oops, Global Idiots, OOPS, Global Village - sorry about that slip up.

There is NO difference except for executable name.
PMfax was the ORIGINAL name when this product was first published.
PMfax is published by NiteHawk, under an agreement with Keller to use PMfax
name. PMfax uses Win clients (in the LAN product) that integrate into the
fax system - UNLIKE FaxWorks Win clients.
PMfax includes additional utilities, etc on the distribution CDs
unlike FaxWorks.

PMfax is the product we have been using here for the last 4 or more years
_but_ it was NOT available for sale EXCEPT as a corporate multi-user
product.

FREEWARE: set6x86.exe / get6x86.exe v1.2 for OS/2
=================================================

The expected placement locations are:

ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/os2/textutil/set6x86.zip
ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/os2/sysutil/set6x86.zip

Run your own Web Server - Poor man's solution.

What does this REXX script do? well.......... read on!

This is the poor man's solution to running a web server(on your local PC).

Background:
Every time you logon to your Internet Service Provider. You get your IP
address from a range of IP addresses that your ISP "owns". In other words,
you get a different IP address every time you logon to your ISP.

That can be a pain in the neck. If you're running your own Web server.

What does this REXX script do, to make things easier?
1. It gets your local IP address (You have to logon first)
2. It generates a HTML file and inserts the obtained IP address, in the
generated file.
3. It uses FTP to transfer the file to your Home directory on your ISP's
machine.

What YOU have to do:
1. Make a link from your homepage to the file that gets transferred.
2. Modify the REXX script(read the comments in the REXX file)
to suit your setup.

That's it.....

The OS/2 Dos Games List is back up!
Reply-to: csraweb@qualityservice.com
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey,
I would've put this up a while back but I ...uh..forgot. Oh well, I put
the OS/2 Dos games list back up at
http://www.ifx.net/~crcomer/os2games

I've been pretty busy so, large portions of the site have links that don't
work. I'll be working on it some more this week. If you have a game you want
on the list just send me a letter. I would *really* appreciate some feedback.
I'll keep working on it if there's a demand.

regarding my problems with WinOS2 and S3 3.01 driver, Ashton told me:

"Suffice to say I have the drivers you need to fix it. They are IBM's S3
drivers based on the 32bit S3 drivers, and they are extremely hard to find.
S3 themselves didn't release a complete set."

and he is sending me those drivers.

Do you use VoiceType ? Have you heard about SpeechAdvantage for VoiceType ?
There is a medical, as well as general version.

The most up to date information can be seen at:

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/speechadvantage

It works with the Warp4 version of VoiceType as well as the old version. It
also works if you have Object REXX active.

> By any chance, would you carry "Seagates backup for os/2 warp" software?

We expect the on-again, off-again Arcada/Seagate Backup Exec for OS/2 next
week or so, about A$140.

Full details are on www.arcada.com and.or www.seagate.com.
Apparently it does support SCSI as well as Zip/Jazz and everything else.

SM2ADDON for IBM SearchManager/2
Reply-to: siebert@cs.tu-berlin.de (Steffen Siebert)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Released: SM2ADDON for IBM SearchManager/2
==========================================

I've written a DLL, which adds some important features to IBM SearchManager/2:

- Support of HTML files
- Support of gzipped files
- Files can be ignored by file-extension
- Format of some specific or all files in a directory can be
specified using a special file

The DLL is free (but of course you need SM/2 to use it), you can download it
via FTP from ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/incoming/sm2addon.zip at present, may move
to /os2/diskutil).

Visit my homepage at http://www.cs.tu-berlin.de/~siebert for information
about other OS/2 programs written by me.

What is IBM Searchmanager/2?
============================

The IBM SearchManager/2 (SM/2) is a very powerful tool for easy finding a
document which you remember being on your hard-drive, but have absolutely no
idea, where it is or how it's named.

Just think of it as if you can use AltaVista to search your hard disk (in fact,
AltaVista has released a similar program called "My Computer Private
eXtension", but it only runs on Windows 95 and Windows NT).

Unfortunately the SM/2 is held secret by the IBM marketing and even support
is hard to get (don't bother to search the Internet for fixes, just write to
the support-staff on Compuserve, Forum IBMDES). At least there is some
product information on IBM's WWW pages:

In the MultiCad magazine, current issue (Vol.5 No.2) we found this letter:

Why not warp to OS/2?
I am encouraged to write a few words in support of a choice that exists
outside of Micxosoft's monopoly in operating systems for PCs.
I have been looking at the IBM 32-bit operating system known as OS/2 -
operating system type 2 - to assess its suitability as a platform for people
who need processing power.
In the box that accompanies the latest version (known as Warp 4), there is a
sampler CD-ROM with more than 70 applications that one can try out. This, I
believe, is a reasonable indication that the product is not "dead and buried", as one
is often led to believe. In addition, I have been receiving several emails a
week of information on material available to try out in beta test form,
shareware, and as short-life demos of the real thing. Applications available
seem to cover a wide range, from useful utilities to use with the operating
system, CAD packages and business products, as well as the inevitable games.
Until I started looking at the previous version, several months ago, I did
not realise that it runs (and very successfully) almost all existing 16-bit
Windows applications, each one in its own crash-proof environment. It will
also run all regular DOS applications similarly.
As I am extremely enthusiastic about this platform, which seems to run faster and
more reliably than Windows 95 and Windows 3.11, and which seems to load
applications faster, I would like to hear from readers who actually use OS/2
themselves.
I have so far encountered a software developer who writes library automation
applications targetted at Asia, an AutoCAD user with some pretty great ways
to use it, and a couple of younger computer shop 'gurus' who swear that its
the best thing since sliced bread.
May I suggest that a start would be to email me at rashton@ozemail.com.au,
or to write to Multi-CAD Magazine with the envelope marked for my attention?
