Subject: OS/2 News, Views and PRs 8th March 1997

Hi there !

Somehow, last month my Warp4 E: boot partition system become so unreliable,
it was almost like back to the dark days of running MS (TM) Windows (TM). So
I've decided to do format /l followed by a re-install. As the Warp4 install
was originally just a quick install 'just to have a look' -and then I just
started using it- there was not much in a way of personalized customization
to be lost.

I'm glad to report that it seems to be working reliably again (just like it
used to since '92). One really weirdo thing happened, after installation I
discovered I couldn't open a DeScribe doc with "unable to start
application", so I thought I'll "do it the "oldway"- start the application
first. That's when I discovered that all icons/object in the DeScribe folder
were just lifeless plain-white rectangles ..... and the DeScribe folder on
the F: hard drive was totally EMPTY....

Luckily, we just received the new Graham Utilities ver.2, so I quickly fired
the undelete, only to find just *3* files from the DeScribe sub-dir.....

After a conversation with Chris Graham, I've re-run undelete with -d, this
time I've found some 21,000 files, including all my wp docs. Thanks, Chris,
you have saved me again !!! I think maybe I'll format /l the F: data drive
as well.

This time, I've decided to install all apps first, and hi-res video driver
last, so, finally today I've installed high res video drivers for the #9
GXEPro card (S3 ver 3.03.01), after persevering with the VGA res running
soem ridiculous refresh rate, it was nice to get again my nice and steady
1024x768 @75Hz.

The only problem I struck, whilst FS WinOS2 runs fine, seemless locks my
systems solid. As I do not use Win apps, it's hardly a major problem, though
if anyone knows of a solution, please let me know. I checked for the DOS
video settings 'XGA IOtrap" OFF and "Video switch" ON as per reradme, both
were correct.

Another thing that came out of conversation with Chris, I mentioned to him
that FastBack no longer works, and Symantec confirmed it didn't , adding to
it that the software was now discontinued and no longer supported. Chris
then replied, What do you mean, it doesn't work, I use it. So I tried
re-installing it, and sure enough, it works fine with Warp4.

As Symantec no longer sells FastBack, thus it is not a product I can
recommend, it still truly is an excellent example of fine software design
and engineering, even though it was on of the earlier OS/2 applications, it
took advantage of threading, SOM, WPS, templates, drag'n'drop, and no modal
dialogues. We can only look at it and reflect where our software would be if
major vendors supported OS/2. It's sad. And it backs 16755 files in 1312
Directories and 987351 Kilobytes in about 35 minutes on a Sony SDT5000 DAT
with NO noticeable load as I continued to download files from Internet, and
whatever else I was doing.

Somehow, the D: partition was coming with a "unable to load DLL" message, so
I thought, as the format /l is still in the command-history stack, why not
re-format that one as well - now that the tape is running OK again, After
that, it took just 4 minutes to restore the full boot partition backup,
about 100MB, from the original boot partition backup tape done when I first
installed WarpC in March 95. It booted perfectly - except it was trying to
login to a Novell server we no longer have, but that was easily fixed.

So who took part in Cleanup Australia day ? (I am only asking 'cause I
cleaned Battersea (?sp) Park at Abbotsford.)

NO, cleaning your HD, screen, tape drive does NOT qualify !

But on the subject of cleaning, if you are using a DAT tape, (or for that
matter any tape) do clean it regularly, Sony tells me majority of DAT drives
returned for service simply need a cleaning pass !

OS/2 users and their sites;

Did anyone *not* hear about Dr Raven, the WarpedSpiderMan ? Dr Robert Raven,
being an arachnologist was dealing with web(s) sites probably a lot longer
than most of us, and he has a SpiderWWWeb at the Queensland Museum.

Spider Web Page http://www.uq.edu.au/~qmrraven
Muggy weather is back the cool January respite is over!

Dr Raven has been very prominent in promoting OS/2 with several press
stories in various journals over the last few years.

And, talking about WWW pages, check out the Ted Romer's Watermaid web:

"You may be interested to look in on my home page 210.0.2.25
Of interest is that it is the first created using the optic fibre trial
with OPTUS with speeds capable of 10 mega bits a second although the
best ive seen is 51 k per second

Its held on my machine as the server at home and my machine is also
serving as a ftp site. Its a sign of the great things to come. And of
course the best part is using OS2."

//it has a nice Apache Server logo - first local Apache Server that I have
seen. hey, Ted - as you are running it (I guess) on the OptusVision PayTV
cable- if you get too many web page hits during evening movie - does the TV
flicker ? (;> //

Ted also had this to say about the Unite CDMaker:

"Your Unite program is still working wonders at writing CD's I guess we
have written over some 500 without failures. A great program despite the
few problems with the HP 4021i writer. Its hard to imagine that any
program can at least close a session if a fixation error occurs and one
can still use the CD!!"

Keep up the good work.

//Thanks, Ted !//

I really do not know WHY I still bother to read the SMH "computer' pages,

[sorry to digress - did anyone NOT hear the true story of Gareth' demise ?
If there is sufficient request for it (not less than 1 person), I'll include
it next time.]

So they wrote about the German Chaos Club showing off a MS-TM Activex MS-TM
running on MS-TM Win95 MS-TM, *except* they just called it an applet.

Seemingly as an afterthought, they quoted a report saying "Activex and Java
applet are suss"

full story about that hack is on:

"A while ago there was a discussion on AcitveX and security based on reports
from the CCC (Chaos Computer Club, Hamburg). This has now been extended in
an article in "ix" (the sibling of c't), which is also available in English
on their web site. For those who are interested, here is the URL:
www.heise.de/ix/artikel/E/1997/03/090/ "

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sad, but true:

It seems IBM has sshh-quitely-sshh dropped OpenDoc as well. At least mostly.
There is not even 1 session on OpenDoc at the upcoming IBM Technical
Interchange in May - which is a confirmation that it's died or dying.

Nevertheless, we are expecting soon several OpenDoc products: Mesa 2,
Photo>Graphics, .....

Netscape has just released a new preview edition of Netscape Communicator
for most platforms. OS/2 is unfortunately not among them. The reason is
simple, we aren't ready to preview the OS/2 product at this time. But rest
assured Netscape Communicator for OS/2 is under development. I can't give
you any dates at this time but stay tuned. The minute it is available I will
announce it here.

Here's a true story, that happened recently. IBM PSP's VP of marketing, Donn
Atkins, was on an airline flight (I think it was American but am not sure)
and the person at the gate was having to reboot the computer. "We have a lot
of trouble with Windows at our company," she apologized.

"I know what you mean. Windows gives us a lot of trouble, too," Donn
replied, as he got on board.

AppletAuthor Web Page:
http://www.ibm.com/java/appletauthor/

Shaun,
We will not be shipping anything for OS/2 until the second quarter. You may
want to take a look at the beta forum to see all the OS/2 discussion. I will
add your name to our list of folks to be notified when the OS/2 version is
available.

Jim Patrick
//after Shaun complianed, Jim replied://

Shaun,
There are a couple of reasons that our beta code only supports Win 95/NT to
date. When we started this project, we had to choose a platform to develop
our code on and we chose Windows. At that time, the OS/2 JDK was still being
developed while Sun had released the Windows JDK.

Also our marketing strategy is to go after web page designers that are NOT
Java programmers. Our research tells us that these folks are using Mac and
Windows to design the content of their web pages. The Mac Java JDK is
hopeless at this point, so here we are with Windows.

We have been working with other IBM teams to get AppletAuthor working
correctly in OS/2. We have made changes to our code and they have made
changes to the OS/2 JDK. There are still several major problems that have
kept us from shipping an OS/2 version. At the present time, we believe that
when we move on to Java JDK 1.1 that a lot of the technical difficulties
will be removed and that AppletAuthor will then work correctly across all
platforms.

We have now received a demo copy of this application, if you're interested,
please let us know:

Normac manufactures and installs kitchen and bathroom cabinets. The
company sells only to builders and has sales offices in several
cities in Canada and the United States. Normac contracts to provide
all the kitchens and bathrooms in a subdivision or apartment build-
ing. Although one job may include only a few different models, small
variations in dimension mean that each unit must be individually
measured and built. Previously, Normac was drawing all layouts (plan
view) by hand. This is a tedious process considering that several
hundred kitchens are produced each week. My task was to computerize
the drawing operation so that a single "master" layout is drawn for
each model. The master is then copied and modified for each produc-
tion work order. In addition, the program automatically produces a
cabinet and door lists for the shop.

This is a full Presentation Manager program which runs under OS/2
and was written in C using the IBM Visual Age C++ compiler. It has
scale and zoom capability and allows full interactive graphical
editing of layouts using standard cabinets and other parts.
Dimensioning in centimeters or inches is automatic, and the user can
add notes anywhere on the drawing. The source code exceeds 31,000
lines and is divided by function into 42 files. This program been in
use since December, 1995.

Press Release - QVision, Inc. March 3, 1997

Workhorse Library Series

Q: When is a book more than a book?
A: When it is a Workhorse Library Computer Book on CDROM from QVision.

A Workhorse Library Book is a combination of text, spoken words and original
artwork. Titles in the Workhorse Library Series will include both classical
and original works. There will be books suitable for children, teenagers,
and adults as well as books suitable for children of all ages such as
"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland".

The first Workhorse Library Book to be released is "Aesop's Fables -
Volume 1". A collection of 40 Aesop's Fables each with an original piece
of artwork, hand drawn and scanned into the computer in full color.
QVision has collected over 350 unique Aesop's Fables and plans to publish
at least two more volumes in 1997 of these fables.

A Workhorse Library Book lets you read the text and also will read the
text to you or your child. A simple easy to use interface, tested on
children as young as 4 years old, lets you concentrate on the story
not the computer interface. Your young child can sit down and have
an Aesop Fable read to her or him without your assistance.

Children of all ages - such as an 80 year old grandmother - can enjoy
Aesop; these timeless stories are teaching-fables from the classical era
of Greece. Everyone remembers the story of the "Tortoise and the Hare"
from their youth.

However the Workhorse Library Series was not designed to be just a story
book reader. This series was designed along side QVision's Workhorse
Learning Series of educational programs. The Workhorse Learning Series
is designed to be educational not "edutainment". Children love to learn
and our test response to educational programs has been an eye opener.

Available April of 1997 to OS/2 users. Available May of 1997 for
Windows 3.11 or higher users including Windows 95. "Aesop's Fables -
Volume 2" should ship by July 1997. "Aesop's Fables - Volume 3" by
October 1997.

Workhorse Library as an Educational Tool
----------------------------------------
A Workhorse Library Book produces educational benefits on different levels
depending on the child. A young child 2-3 years old enjoys it mainly as a
"picture book". A little older child 4-5 years old enjoys it as a story and
a "seeing the pictures move in my mind" book, thus giving them a chance to
build an imagination and to start an understanding of more vocabulary. A 5-7
year old beginning reader actively increases his vocabulary and sight words.
A young reader 6-7 years old gets some reinforcement for his work in reading
by being able to follow along in a "different book" from his school book.
And a reader 8-9 to 10-11 years old can follow along completely and pick up
the more difficult words. All the while, the children are learning and
practicing basic computer skills t oo.

Older readers will enjoy classic literature such as Robert Louis
Stevenson.

Workhorse Library User Interface
--------------------------------
The interface to the Workhorse Library consist of three parts. The first
is the "Bookshelf" or index of books. Each book when installed from the
CDROM places an entry in the index of books. The reader selects the book
he or she wished from the index. If the proper CDROM for the selected
book is not in the CDROM drive, the reader is prompted to insert it.
The second part is the Table of Contents for a book. In a collection of
fables or short stories, the reader can jump to the one they wish to
read. Or they can go to a bookmark they have set for this book to
continue reading where they previously left off.

The third part is the actual page of the book: these can be text or
pictures.

The reader (or the reader and parent) can set options on how they wish to
use the Workhorse Book. One of these options allows the reader to have
the computer read the page when the reader asks it to. Another starts
the computer reading a page as soon as the reader turns to a new page.

The reader can instruct the computer to read a single page and then wait
for the reader to turn the page. Or he can ask the computer to turn
the pages and read until the end of the chapter.

Pictures can be displayed at full color (16 million colors) to get the
full effect of the artwork or at 256 colors for speed. For readers with
8-bit sound cards, there is an option to play 8-bit sounds. However,
QVision recommends the 16-bit sounds for clarity and background noise.

Volume levels can be adjusted just by hitting a number key on your key
board.

All mouse interface actions are mapped to the key board so the reader can
use either the mouse or the keyboard to control the Workhorse Library.

Pricing
-------
Aesop's Fables - Volume 1 is priced at $17.95 (US). Orders for OS/2
version are $14.95 if received by May 1, 1997.
