New Hardware Support Web Sites
As a convenience for customers installing OS/2 Warp, IBM has created
several Worldwide Web sites related to hardware support. The first
site, OS/2 Device Driver Pak On-line, provides an easy-to-use
distribution method for a wide range of OS/2 device drivers. The
device manufacturers create and support the device drivers at this
site. The site includes libraries in Japanese, Korean, and
Taiwanese. Complete instructions are available at:
http://service.software.ibm.com/os2ddpak/index.htm.
Two additional sites provide compatibility lists for IBM PC Company
systems and IBM Options. A matrix shows which hardware products can
be used with the OS/2 Warp family of products including OS/2 Warp 3,
OS/2 Warp Connect, OS/2 Warp 4, OS/2 Warp Server, and OS/2 Warp
Server SMP. Visit
http://service.software.ibm.com/os2ddpak/htm/ibmsys.htm for PC
systems or http://service.software.ibm.com/os2ddpak/ibmopt.htm for
IBM options.

Product Advisory: OS/2 and the Year 2000
With the coming millennium, many older computer products (including PC
software) may be unable to cope with dates beyond December 31, 1999. Much of
the world's software was written to handle only two-digit years (00 through
99).
Now is the time to examine whether you're ready for the year 2000. Problems
can occur even before January 1, 2000, because computers used to handle
everything from insurance policy renewals to sales forecasting to loan payment
calculations may have problems well before the actual date.
PLEASE NOTE: IBM OS/2 Version 2.11 and earlier are NOT Year 2000 Ready. If
you are running Version 2.11 or earlier releases of OS/2, please consult your
IBM software specialist or reseller to obtain an upgrade to the latest version
of OS/2 Warp.
OS/2 Warp (Version 3 and Version 4 releases) are Year 2000 Ready. That is to
say that the base API (Application Programming Interface) calls in these
releases support dates beyond December 31, 1999. Applications running on
these releases may or may not be Year 2000 Ready, so please be sure to include
such applications (particularly mission-critical applications) in your Year
2000 review.
For more information on preparing for the millennium, please see IBM's Year
2000 web site at http://www.ibm.com/year2000. Through this web site you can
access a comprehensive list of IBM products which are Year 2000 Ready.

A new client has been released for the Solnet effort of the DES Challenge. The
new client runs about 1.5-1.8 times faster than the old client depending on
what x86 chip you have. Feel free to download it off of the main Solnet page
at http://keymaster.des.sollentuna.se/.
For those not participating, each platform is ranked in the statistics and we
are trying to make OS/2 appear as high in the rankings as possible. All you
need is a PC that is connected to the internet. If you are connected through
a dialup line, grabs blocks from keymaster4 which will let you keep them for
36 hours before expecting them back (other keymasters expect 12 hour
turnaround). This way, you can connect only when you have blocks to upload
and download, causing almost no strain on your ISP or phone bill!
Here is a little bit of information from the Solnet FAQ:
This coordinated effort is a effort to respond to RSA Data Security's DES
Challenge. RSA has announced a competition in which the goal is to find a
secret key used to encrypt some text. The encryption algorithm used in this
specific case is DES (Digital Encryption Standard). We're using a method
called "brute-force" to solve this challenge. What this means is that we're
testing all possible keys to see if they're correct. How is this possible?
Well, in this case we happen to know that the secret text (the text that's
been encrypted with DES) starts with "The unknown message is:" since this is
give in the rules of the competition. This enables us to take a candidate key
and try to decrypt the first part of the cipher-text and then compare this to
the known plaintext. If it's a match we have found the correct key, if it's no
match then we go to the next key and so forth.
The DES encryption standard uses 56 bits for the key. This gives us a total of
72057594037927936 keys to try. Theoretically the correct key should be found
when we've tested around 50% of the keys.

InJoy
InJoy is the 32 bit, multi-threaded PPP/SLIP Internet Dialer for OS/2 Warp.
An UNBELIEVABLY fast and *easy_to_use* shareware dialer.
Not a user interface or front end for PPP or SLATTACH included in OS/2,
InJoy is an original dialer with lean, custom crafted PPP/SLIP code. This
gives InJoy its proven performance advantage while you continue to use the
IBM TCP/IP stack and your existing Internet applications.
Use InJoy alone or share a dial up connection with Mac's, WinNT/95/3.11 and
other nodes on your LAN.
Complete description at: http://www.fx.dk/injoy/glance.htm
Update
We have just released a beta upgrade for InJoy 1.1 which will solve a few
problems that were spotted - It ads a little functionality too.
This update (InJoy 1.11 - build Jun11) will only run on top of version 1.1
- so you need to get that. You can find everything you need at the InJoy
homepage at http://www.fx.dk/injoy
To install this update you only have to unzip it directly in your InJoy
directory.
Changes in v1.11
* SLIP idle timeout now works
* Now impossible to save unnamed tickers
* Registration process faster and safer.. Could take way to long for InJoy
to register.
* Changing unnamed tickers caused traps. Fixed.
* Stopping a dial attempt with ESC after script had begun caused a redial.
Now fixed.
* Ported InJoy to VisualAge - enabled a fair deal of optimization, both to
InJoy itself and the user interface.
* InJoy now uses the OS2_SHELL environment variable to know which cmd to
spawn when autostarting .cmd files.

CPU monitor 1.0 is now available at
ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/cpumon10.zip with its final destination
being /pub/os2/utils/system. The filename is CPUMON10.ZIP.
This is a new CPU monitor utility that uses an API call only available in Warp
4 and Warp Server Advanced SMP and Warp 3 plus fixpack 29 or higher. It will
not run on versions of OS/2 prior to Warp 3 with fixpack 29 applied.
It does not use an IDLE time thread to soak up all unused CPU. This means it
will not interfere with other applications. Co-exists happily with the Warp
Center CPU monitor and allows both to report accurate results.
Supports up to 16 CPUs.
Configure update interval from 1 to 30 seconds and CPU graphs from a choice of
15 colours.

Announcing IPAD V0.2.3 (Beta) for OS2
Although IPAD is a COMMERCIAL product, the evaluation version is available for
download FREE of charge.
IPAD is the multiplatform front end to a special tool to be completed some
time in the future. It currently provides most of the functionality of an
interactive GUI vector drawing package, together with some bit mapped image
handling. It allows easy editing across files using multiple overlapping
windows. The graphics objects drawn and edited by IPAD have built in
intelligence. They react to the mouse and each other so as to maximise user
productivity and reduce tedious repetitive setup sequences.
With most other packages an object must first be selected and placed into one
of many modes in order for the package to provide handles through which the
object must be manipulated. With IPAD however, simple rules govern the
behaviour of an object depending on what other objects it is touching and how
it is approached and grabbed.
Any object may be picked up and moved or its shape changed without it first
having to be selected, and if its edges are touching any other object, IPAD
will intelligently manipulate those objects in order to reduce the knock on
effects of the change. With most other packages a simple change can require a
lot of rework.
A very powerful feature of IPAD is the way it is able to manipulate groups of
selected objects. A group is not just a collection of objects, it has
properties of its own. A group can be edited like any other object. Objects
can be very easily picked up or dropped from a group. Groups can also be
opened and their contents edited in their own windows.
IPAD also has a catagory system that allows the user to define the properties
of an object and to override those properties in a derived object. Complex
objects can thus be built by grouping simpler objects and assigning them
properties. This makes it a very simple matter to create a set of component
objects which can be held in a template window, copied across into the working
drawing and the properties modified to suit the working drawing.
IPAD supports printers using PCL 5 (most HP), ESC-P2 (most Epson), PostScript
and anything else via ppm or png. It has been designed from the ground up to
be fast and responsive. The base system is a 486DX 33MHz + 8MB RAM + ISA video
card.
IPAD will (in the future) provide a mechanism to drive third party backend
software (e.g. code generators, state machine generators etc.) For now you are
restricted to just drawing with it. Since IPAD is a COMMERCIAL product, its
source code will not be made available.
IPAD currently provides the same GUI interface on Linux 2.0.x, MSDOS 6.2, OS/2
Warp, Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and Windows NT 3.51

announcements, please write and report you e-mail address, name and serial
number. You may have changed email addresses. If you registered with BMT or
OS/2 Shareware BBS in the "early days", your address may have been lost or
never reported (the BBS never asked for it until recently).
If you are receiving announcements at a Compuserve address and which to switch
to another address, just write.
My email address is nick@secant.com
Registrations are taking no more than a week to turn around. If you don't get
your key within this time frame, please (you guessed it :) write. I often
have keys bounce, and the address I entered matches that provided on the
forms. I have no recourse until you write me!
Finally, the NEWSREADER addon to MR/2 ICE is progressing nicely. I plan at
least one more expansion, where I add beta testers. Maybe more When I add a
group, we are testing the setup and initial user reaction. At this time, I am
only accepting REGISTERED USERS as potential testers. If interested please
write nick@secant.com with a subject of NEWSREADER BETA EXPANSION. Use this
subject, please.
o Keyboard fixups and changes relating to the SOURCE and REPLY window
hotkeys. Was interfering with the use of ALT-4 and ALT-6 to enter hi-end
ASCII.
o Removed the case where too many charset translations were performed when
replying to messages with hi-end ASCII in subject. Previously, the reply
subject would lose the characters.
o Spacebar will now "page through" the current folder's messages, one screen
at a time, switching to the NEXT message when at the end of the current.
I'll add a configuration for "direction". Still may need an adjustment so
as to minimize wasteful end-of-message displays of a single non-text line.
