I was making a point about lack of push on OS/2 to IBM UK marketing with the

Charles,

Thanks for your letter ref.bd3789. Sorry for not getting back to you sooner
but for a company that is not doing any OS/2 Warp marketing I am being kept
incredibly busy.

I sense the general theme to your letter is the lack of broadbased, highly
visible advertisements for OS/2 Warp, not just here in the UK but across
Europe. On this I would say true, we have not spent thousands of pounds on
advertising Warp/Warp Server in the PC Press. Instead we have been
concentrating our efforts of getting the right information to the right
people.

To this end you have seen a major re-vamp of the OS/2 home pages
http://www.software.ibm.com/os/warp giving details on not just the prodcusts
themselves but IBM Software Choice and Bluebird. Alot of our time has been
used in explaining these concepts to press, analysts, consultants and
customers. There has been alot of media coverage on both.

Scalability Day. Correct we did not have a huge IBM day to counter the M/S
products. We didn't have to our products work and have been working, running
businesses for decades. Alot of PR work was done by us which got coverage in
the UK press showing how scalable, robust etc. IBM's products are.

Bluebird has been in all the major UK PC mags. I have the clippings to prove
it. Although Bluebird may not be in the title of the headlines the articles
are there. It is positioned as a transition product to move people towards
Network Computing. It is not a replacement for the PC or the Network
Computer. RIPL is a relevent technology for educational establishment
(Henley College use it for over 100 PC's running DOS and DOS/Windows) but
there is currently no support for Windows 95. Thus there is a known gap.
Once that has been sorted then I would agree. schools and colleges have a
responsibility to provide the applications used by industry. That facility
is lacking in the current set up.

Educational offerings on Warp are in place. We intend to announce one for
Warp Server very soon, thus I am confused about your statement. Once again I
refer to Henley College who have fully exploited the attractive prices both
on hardware and software.

TEAMOS/2 WEB WWW ONLINE

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello,

After a long road, the TEAMOS2.ORG domain has once again got an online
presence. Sometime earlier today the InterNIC completed a new registration
for the domain, and assigned it to Innovative Logic Corp, and specifically to
myself. I have set up preliminary web service and email forwarding on a
system here.

One of the first things I would like to do is find a mirror of the old content
from the previous site. In the past 6 1/2 hours since the DNS records
propagated, there have been over 400 hits looking for URLs in the old site,
despite it being offline for close to 6 months. I think it's important to
find a mirror of that old content, and put it in place immediately.

Over the course of the next week, we will be creating a new web site on the
other domain we acquired, TEAMOS2.COM. This web site will contain important
information defining where we plan to take the two domains, and offer everyone
an opportunity to participate in the process! Please come look the site over,
around July 1st.

We are also looking for new content that could be added to the TeamOS2 tree
from the previous incarnation. If you have an idea, a web page, or would like
to participate in the resurrection of the Team, please send your suggestions,
thoughts and comments as well as your web page ideas or pointers to mirrors of
old content to a special email address we have set up just for this purpose:

assist@teamos2.org

and

assist@teamos2.com

We look forward to serving the OS/2 community and providing a reliable and
productive presence to everyone's benefits.

Michael McLagan
General Manager
Innovative Logic Corp.

P.S. Please don't email me, I'm already buried under a massive wave of the
stuff and there are others helping with the above addresses! Thanks!!

The Java Development Kit 1.1 pre-release (beta) is now available from the
following web address:
http://service.boulder.ibm.com/jdk/s-feat.htm.

Java 1.1 for OS/2 Warp
----------------------
The JDK 1.1 for OS/2 Warp beta is a fully compliant implementation of Sun
Microsystems,* Inc.'s JDK 1.1 (Version 1.1.1), which includes support for
JavaBeans*, Java Database Connectivity (JDBC*), and improved security
features, as well as many other improvements.

The JDK 1.1 for OS/2 Warp includes substantial improvements over the currently
available JDK 1.02 with many new capabilities. Some of the more significant
improvements include:

- JavaBeans platform-independent component architecture lets developers write
re-usable components once and run them anywhere. Customers can be assured
that components developed with the JDK 1.1 for OS/2 Warp will be
interoperable with other JavaBeans components, regardless of the operating
system platform, reducing development and deployment costs.

- JDBC provides an open interface specification to SQL databases, allowing
customers using a Java-based application to transparently access information
from legacy databases, such as IBM's DB2.

- Signed Java-based applets -- such as bank loan applications -- can be
downloaded from an intranet or Internet site and saved to the user's hard
disk for added security.

- Many Java-based applications will perform close to 30 percent faster, as
measured by the CaffeineMark 2.5 performance benchmark, over the currently
available Java 1.02 for OS/2 Warp.

- Language internationalization implements UniCODE 2.0 and classes, so that
global applications can run in any language and include the correct
character set, time, date and currency for that locale.

- For programmers, this release of Java for OS/2 Warp includes a new debugger.

I have created a web page for the IRC #os2prog channel. IRC, in case you
don't know, is a real-time chat forum where thousands of people can discuss
any of hundreds of different topics. The #os2prog channel is for OS/2
programming, and many of the best OS/2 programmers hang out on #os2prog on a
regular basis. If you want to talk about OS/2 programming, then you should
check out #os2prog.

The URL is:

Some of the links and biographical information is missing, but I'm working on
it as fast as I can.

I look forward to seeing you on #os2prog!

====================================================================

A year ago, I made a fictional announcement for the OS/2 Warp 4 beta and
emailed it to several people within PSP. Since I've long left IBM and this
Wednesday will be the one-year anniversary of the note, I've decided to put it
up on a web page for all to enjoy. The URL is:

Please remember that the contents of this web page are a parody, and no harm
is intended. All of the individuals mentioned in the text did not, to the
best of my knowledge, say or write any of the quotations in the text. In
other words, it's a big joke, and no one should take it seriously.

Hi,

at http://www.fis.cinvestav.mx/~titov/os2soft/mp3/ you'll find a lot of info
related with mp3 on OS/2.

this page dedicated to mpeg-I layer-3 (mp3 file extension) audio compression
related programs for OS/2. There you will find links to players,
encoders/decoders, front-end (text mode and PM), and other mp3 sites to start
from.

The advantage of mp3 is a lossless audio compression with 1:12 ratio (3 min
song with CD quality takes about 3.5M).

The Generic Mapping Tools (GMT), a set of UNIX tools designed for high-quality
display and manipulation of spatial information, has been ported to OS/2 Warp.
More than 50 utilities are provided for data analysis and display. Good
documentation for all routines, as well as a Tutorial and Cookbook, are
provided as postscript files. Installation must be on an machine using HPFS.

All graphical output is in the form of postscript files. Therefore, in order to
effectively use the routines, one must have a postscript printer or use
software such as Ghostscript/Ghostview, which can print postscript files on
non-postscript printers. The GMT routines are especially designed for mapping
scientific data. GMT has its own web site,
http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/wessel/gmt.html

as well a an e-mail listserver for user support.

The OS/2 port of GMT has been uploaded to the HOBBES OS/2 archive
(ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu), and can be accessed as

In /pub/os2/apps/graphics,

gmt4os2b.zip [executables]
gmt4os2d.zip [documentation]
gmt4os2s.zip [sources]
netcdf_2.zip [netCDF library, NOT required by executables].

Note that this port of GMT requires the EMX run-time library,
available as

/pub/os2/dev/emx/v0.9c/emxrt.zip at the HOBBES site.

GMT is licensed software, but there is no charge for its use.

OBERON SOFTWARE RELEASES JAVA PROGRAMERS TOOLKIT

July 7, 1997, Mankato, MN

Oberon Software today released its first Java based toolkit. "This builds
on everything we have learned over the years about multi-threaded programming
under OS/2." said Oberon founder and President Brady Flowers. "We know
that developers will find many good uses for this toolkit and we ourselves
will be using it extensively in the months to come as we begin to release a
range of new Java based applications and applets."

Building on its strength as a supplier of terminal emulation and telecom
software, Oberon has included in the new toolkit Java implementations for
ANSI, VT100, and Telnet terminal emulations and ZModem file transfers as well
as a number of Java AWT extensions and utility classes such as circular
spin buttons, Regular Expression matching, CRC calculations, and Internet
e-mail (SMTP) utility classes.

The library contains an extensive collection of classes for scientific function
plotting which, in addition to being attractive to scientists, engineers,
educators and students, can also be used by anyone needing to display, size,
and rotate three dimensional images.

Also included in the toolkit are OS/2 native classes for accessing the serial
port, HLLAPI programming, and a REXX interface which allows a developer to add
REXX scripting support to Java applications. Oberon Software plans to
release cross platform versions of these native classes in a forthcoming
release of the toolkit later this year.

Oberon Software allows the toolkit runtime package to be freely distributed
without royalty and has announced an introductory price for the programmer's
portion of the toolkit or $39.95. All interested parties are invited to
contact Oberon Software for more information. Oberon Software can be reached
by phone at 507-388-7001, their web page at http://www.OberonSoftware.com,
or by mail at Oberon Software, Inc., 1405 E. Main St., Mankato, MN 56001,
USA.

Oberon Software has been developing OS/2 software and providing OS/2
related services since 1988. More than just a specialty, OS/2 related

MIDIWAV is a freeware Netscape plugin that converts MIDI data directly into
WAV data. The result is that your processor acts as a wavetable and the sound
quality is only limited by your patches. The midi engine used in the package
is timidity written by Tuukka Toivonen .

For those of you that don't know I have finished the changes required for
MIDWAV to get it to be compatible with DMSI and babmba. I have also improved
the install instructions and I think more people are getting it to work

USE OF OTHER'S WEB SITE CONTENT
The dangers of using content from another party s web site without their
permission is under examination in the US case of Ticketmaster Corporation v
Microsoft Corporation. Microsoft linked one of its web sites
(http://seattle.sidewalk.com) to the Ticketmaster web site
(http://www.ticketmaster.com). Ticketmaster claims that this linking
enhanced the value of Microsoft s web site while diminishing the value of
Ticket master s web site by, amongst other things: depriving Ticketmaster of
advertising opportunities; publishing erroneous information; and diluting
the value of Ticketmaster s relationship with MasterCard, a major
advertiser. Ticketmaster is pressing claims for, amongst others, trade mark

interesting to watch. Even if your intentions are to bring more business to
